EarthBound Price Update (May 2012)

None foundApril 1st, 2009 | EarthBound, Hacking
Today is April 1st. So let’s skip the nonsense and just show you a good past prank you might not have heard of 😀
A few months ago, a skilled EarthBound ROM hacker named NLA posted the following on the PK Hack message board. If you’d rather just skip to the coolness, just download the ROM and try it out. You’ll need a Super NES emulator, of course. I really recommend trying it, even if you’re not interested 😛
Now, for the post:
[ALPHA] Earthbound Chrono Trigger Battle Engine
Yes, it’s real. It’s been a while since I’ve posted or helped with anything in the forums, but I’ve actually been learning 65816 assembly, and I set out to do what everyone thought couldn’t be done: “port” over the Chrono-Trigger engine to EB. I’ve been working together with my long-time buddies, Mr. Accident, Michael1 (Michael Cayer), Mr. Tenda and others to make test patches for this radical new concept, as well as an extremely ( 😯 ) experienced ASM hacker from outside SM.net, Smallhacker and smkdan, so I give them full credit. Overall, I just guided the project, made sure the hack would work correctly, and offered my knowledge when necessary.
Lots of work has been done on this project, and Mr. Tenda has been helping me get the files and information about the process online. I’ll post the specs and instructions at a later time. As for progress, here’s a screenshot I took with ZSNES a few minutes ago.
Right now, the hack is ALPHA so at the moment not much is well-polished; you can see the little not-so-good white spots near Ness is effect of outside-battle PSI Flash, for instance. It doesn’t not look that great, but having the fullscreen flash just didn’t look much better. 😛 I’ll probably edit this a bit later. The outside-battle effects that are at the core of the new engine thats been written are based in sprite animations, so I’ll probably be looking for a spriter, if anyone’s interested in that sort of thing. The sprites need to be 128×128, and will be stored in the expanded ROM area. They will be accessible thanks to a new editor Mr. Tenda has been working the kinks out of for a while now.
Also, if you look, the little boxes above the characters are status boxes. The policeman has “sniffling” status, and one of hippies has “Uncontrollable Crying.” They don’t look too great either, but remember, this is an ALPHA hack. It could break at any time. I assume the details of whether or not it breaks depends on moon/star/planet alignment, time of day, how many cups of coffee have been consumed, and whether or not one has made the proper sacrifices, in the proper order. Honestly, having the status boxes hover has been the biggest headache of the project; the ASM work here was HORRIFIC. Mad props to Michael1 for not exploding (and taking us down with him) while he worked at this on 5 cups of black coffee, each with (supposedly, I can’t comprehend it) 7 shots of espresso. Yikes!
With this, I’m going to get some much needed rest. Comments and questions welcome. I hope the PK Hack forums see more hacks like this develop, something to break the monotony of the “CLAUS AND LUCAS IN EB” sprite hacks, and the occasional teen-angst hack which is laden with swearing and confused sexual references. We all want to see something that clearly rivals Mother 3: Hero’s Genesis, or even JonBound, or even ThaiBound, and the sooner the forums stop being so hell-bent on individualism at the cost of real imagination, the better. 😉
NOTE: APPLY TO 4MB EARTHBOUND ROM. Also, don’t try to temp apply it by having the IPS and ROM share the same name. IT DOESN’T WORK FOR SOME REASON. NOTE: APPLY TO 4MB EARTHBOUND ROM. BUT ENOUGH OF ME LECTURING. GO PLAY THAT HACK and witness the future of Earthbound. 😀
Note: You can ignore all the patching instructions, because you can download it pre-patched here.

Damn you Mato, damn you for ruining dreams!
This is so amazing!! I didn’t even know this was technically possible! This is so amazing, I don’t care if it’s only in ALPHA stage, I’ll only play the game like this. I just hope this is compatible with my save state on my iPhone. Awesome News

Damn, that’s awesome! I can’t wait to see the final product. The attention to detail is astounding.
I hope you’re happy, I’m leaving that on my PSP and showing it to everyone. I kinda expected. Mostly because a while ago, before another really popular game got leaked, someone on 4chan was spreading around a ‘rom’ of the game. When you put it on your DS, it was a dual screen RickRoll.
And it IS april Fool’s so…
You know what makes this ironic? Robo’s music is very similar from Chrono Trigger. I wonder if they thought of that when coming up with what game to use as a parady. They could have easily made it like that EB Fantasy pic made in rpg-maker. brilliant joke all around.
What is Mother 3: Hero’s Genesis; I can’t find anything on it(or is that part of the joke)?
i hate april fool’s , all the lies deciet and crushing of hopes and dreams. nice lol
ZNES had an april fools message as well when I went to leave – it was great :).
Quite well done, overall – wonder if you could program a better resolution player in there, though? Or is that all you can get out of four megs?
I fell for this awhile back. Annoyed me because I had to go through the trouble of finding an abnormally large ROM.
If you actually have gotten together people with experience enough to hack roms, please, take a look at one of the mother 1+2 translation patches or at least see if you can firgure out how to get mother 2/earthbound into gba format I realy want to play it on my gba flash card in english.
And now to end this is true Mr. Saturn-like fashion, Boing! Zoom! Only five can ladder!
I knew this was an April Fools joke, but how did you do the Rick Roll thing?!?!?!?!
Haha, I new it was this.
As soon as I heard the names Smallhacker and SMKD, I knew what it was…
SMW hackers should be familiar with these two. 😛
I’m pretty sure they would have mentioned something about it if they really were working on something like that.
Plus the fact that the rom is being distributed instead of the IPS patch.

Actually, I’m distributing the full ROM, but the original prank had an actual patch that you had to go through the hassle of expanding the EB ROM with PK Hack then applying it.

How did it fool you? The first three sentences of this update explained that this was a prank 😯
I mean i want to change my avatar to Ness(hence the name Ness) using the peace sign.
I swear, this is the best RickRoll ever. I played this hack when it came out, it was awesome. I couldn’t stop laughing at myself.
I knew it would be something like that when I saw at the end of the post that you had linked us to a page with a pre-patched rom. That is about the time I realized that it wasn’t Earthbound. This is a great prank though! Putting this on my homebrew channel!!! : D
You can tell it isn’t real by the pic. You can probably make something like that using a photo-editing program. The “PK Flash” effect looks just like the spray in Paint.
This prank is awesome, anyways! Funny how theres so many comments of people thanking you, Mato.
“The link leads to a video, I’m sure.”
*hover*
“It’s probably in the zip file.”
*looking for ROM patch*
“No ROM patch… What does the ZIP file have?”
*download*
“A ROM? I thought that wasn’t legal… Maybe the video is in…”
*load ROM in emulator*
“Yeah, there it is!”
What did you make me download? Well, that’s what I get for following instructions without reading the comments thread first… 😛
Uuuuhh…did you just Rickroll me through ZSNES? wow, never thought anyone would go THAT far.
![]() | questionsleep said on Apr. 4, 2009 |
That is,
That was good.
I personally found the Rickroll compressed into a SNES ROM more impressing.
Hey, Tomato, its cool and all that you’re distributing this but if this is so cool and all, where are my numerous badges of approval? :3
![]() | Mato said on Apr. 14, 2009 |
I didn’t know you still posted on the forums though 😛
If you want a custom avatar here or a badge on the forums though, lemme know.
Heh, I’ll take a custom avatar or badge on the forums, sure; you can pick. 😀
Wait a minute… did these losers actually go to the trouble of Rickrolling people in 2009? Good job guys, how about All Your Base next time?
Yes, Smallhacker and smkdan released a Rick Roll patch to Super Mario World on 1 April. I suppose this is just ported to something else, no?
Also, Small and smk come from smwcentral.net.
That “Pre patched” link you gave us was just a rick roll, I didn’t expect it since I just did this and didn’t know it was posted april 1st.
OMG. Why Waste Your Time? Maybe I Should Distripute This To People.

thought you could RICK ROLL ME COULD YA?? WELL YA CANT! CAUSE IM FAST, IM MEAN, AND I COULD DO THIS!
NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH!
PSSSSS!!!
>Was all like “What the hell is this?”
>Downloaded it
>Rick roll’d
>FFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
I just got Rick roll’d now i will delete the file so it won’t waste space on my computer. I will block this website next.

The first line of the post says it’s April 1st AND that it’s a prank.
This post is a little old… how did you find this and already want to leave?
How the poo you install it? (im new to installing hacks in earthbound) I DID get snesrolled though.
I remember seeing this thread, but I didn’t download the ROM.
Hah!
