Tips for Buying EarthBound

March 27th, 2009 | Images, Rumors

Note: if you’re unsure of what this is, see the original post here.

Anyway, a much better resolution pic has shown up on Japanese news site Dengeki Online. Here you go!

Ahh, that’s much nicer on the eyes than that tiny, super-blurry scan 😀

UPDATE: Tansunn posted a comparison image in the comments: see here

I’m guessing this is a game with a heavy Earthbound influence, but even if that’s the case I’m very interested.

Woah now it looks much more better on the eyes… Sure does look like a new mother game or a re-write up of Mother2 possible wii ware port anytime soon?

…This is perhaps the most evil thing I’ve ever seen. Evil in that it would be a huge slap in the face if it isn’t some sort of Mother or Mother-inspired RPG.

I’m drooling everywhereeeeeeeeeeeee.

Dale said on Mar. 27, 2009

I’m skeptical about this being related to Mother, but one can always hope..

BottleRocket said on Mar. 27, 2009

Woah, some of those sprites, like the flowers, are exactly the same. This definitely has something to do with MOTHER…

KissofCamine said on Mar. 27, 2009

Th… This is awesome! It looks way too Motherish to NOT be related, for sure!

Flint said on Mar. 27, 2009

Great another MOTHER game I wont be able to play! grumble! grumble! I hope NIntendo gets its act together and this its released on the DS (that way at least I can import it)

P.D. i thin I liked the graphic style in MOTHER 3 better, this is way to textured, I preffer the simplicity of M3

Spitball Sparky said on Mar. 27, 2009

Afterthought: This is unquestionably interesting, but I’m not entirely sure I’d like another game in the series. Mother 3 ended it oh-so-Snake well. Does anybody else share this sentiment?

darkhamsterlord said on Mar. 27, 2009

Either this is a MOTHER game, or they blatantly stole sprites from EarthBound, because I put this in photoshop and pasted EarthBound trees over it, and they match perfectly, down to the pixel.

Necrosaroiii said on Mar. 27, 2009

I am in the same boat, Sparky. Mother 3 wrapped things up perfectly. Who knows, maybe if this IS a Mother game, it is the start of a new “trilogy”, kind of like how the first 6 dragon quests are divided into direct trilogies.

Tansunn said on Mar. 27, 2009

I hadn’t even though about April Fool’s until someone else mentioned it. However, does Japan celebrate that?

Anyway, using the new screenshot, I did another comparison between the two, and it’s quite obvious that the graphic style was ripped from Mother 2 with a few modifications. (More detailed shading on trees and bushes, the red flowers are mirrored, the mailbox and chimney have a few additional pixels, etc.)

Keiji Dragon said on Mar. 27, 2009

Lou said on Mar. 27, 2009

the bushes in the new game have the same properties of the bushes in earthbound, almost exact, they are just more detailed, so we know 100% that this has something to do with Earthbound. they took the bushes from it

Boomerang78 said on Mar. 27, 2009

Spitball Sparky, maybe this is a prequel? Judging from the clothes, I’m guessing this is back before Ninten’s time.

Teal said on Mar. 27, 2009

This does look like it would have something to do with the Mother trilogy. Looking forward to when more information gets released.

NessNomar said on Mar. 27, 2009

the overalls look…looks familiar!

darkhamsterlord said on Mar. 27, 2009

I decided to post a picture of my EB comparisons.

The chimneys don’t quite match up, and Lucas is a pixel smaller than the character in the screenshot, but the resemblance is still uncanny..
If this IS a real game, I find it strange that they would use EarthBound bushes, but MOTHER 3 characters..

Saturnome said on Mar. 27, 2009

Mato said on Mar. 27, 2009

Tansunn: Don’t forget the blades of grass 😉 If you add them in I’ll add the pic to the update 😀

somaticdefilement said on Mar. 27, 2009

Now would be time to deconstruct Itoi saying about no Mother 4 maybe he left room for a prequel? Still skeptical either way this game would be fun to play cuz it looks so motherish.

Severed Head said on Mar. 27, 2009

Perhaps there is the possibility of a spin-off type of thing? Another game by the same people, but not a Mother game? Anyone?

JoyfulSanity said on Mar. 27, 2009

I wouldn’t think this is an April Fool’s day joke. If it was, I would think that they would release the info on April 1st, as opposed to lead up to it. Plus I’d think it would be presented in a more overt way, like “GET READY FOR AN ALL NEW MOTHER GAME!” or something. I understand that it was originally in a weekly magazine but why would there be a higher resolution screen on a different site?

Regardless, I’m certainly not getting my hopes up. I’d rather be pleasantly surprised than sorely disappointed.

Mato said on Mar. 27, 2009

JoyfulSanity: Probably Level 5 issued a press release or a press pack about ROID to all the gaming industry places when making the announcement for the June 1st opening.

santiagoff said on Mar. 27, 2009

I hope this isn’t a prequel to Mother 1. What would the name be? Mother Zero / EarthBound Before Zero? XD

NessNomar said on Mar. 27, 2009

I would think this would be a PERFECT time to create Earthbound 3 with the name I came up with like 3 years ago: Sid (DSi) But I didn’t think about that until now. Like Ness (SNES)

Boomerang78 said on Mar. 27, 2009

Alxprit said on Mar. 27, 2009

This looks too similar. I’m going to be waiting patiently…

Who knows, it could be a connecter between Mother 2 and 3.

DrGlove said on Mar. 27, 2009

It’s even got the awesome mail box!

PKNuMan said on Mar. 27, 2009

That’s what I was thinking…

In the middle of Mother 2 and 3.

Which would probably make a good game, because we don’t know what happened after Ness’ time…

Kris said on Mar. 27, 2009

I’m very skeptical.

The similarities are striking but do not necessary lend themselves to the possibility of a new MOTHER game. I mean, what do we know about this ROID thing? What other types of games are being developed for it? It seems unlikely that Itoi would agree to a MOTHER game on a non-Nintendo console- let alone do so without making a huge announcement about it.

I’m betting the ROID developers are huge MOTHER fans and they decided to make their own RPG based on it. Simple as that.

PKNuMan said on Mar. 27, 2009

Turns out, ROID isn’t a system…

Its a website that advertises stuff like video games and anime and all that other stuff. (Yes, anime. I have gone to the website and there is anime clips there)

This can’t be a MOTHER game… I refuse to get my hopes up.

Spitball Sparky said on Mar. 27, 2009

I like Boomerang’s idea of a prequel. The house looks old fashioned, and the character seems to be a young man. Hmmm…maybe he’ll randomly vanish sometime.

Little sprite, are you George?

16_Bit said on Mar. 27, 2009

If this game is even anything like MOTHER (other than the visuals), I will be happy.

Actually, I think it looks kind of like a harvest moon game…

SmaMan said on Mar. 27, 2009

@Spitball Sparky
I was thinking the same thing! Since it is for mobile phones it will probably be a lot shorter. So this is the perfect way to show what happened in the 1900s where George meets Maria, then they disappear… you know the story.

Maybe we should codename this Earthbound -1 for now? lol

ZombiePaul said on Mar. 27, 2009

Thanks for the clearer pic Mato: you take great care of us 🙂

I am always skeptical about anything EarthBound related (anyone that has been a fan since it’s release and went through the EB64 drama knows what I mean). I have to admit that this pic’s similarities are pretty uncanny.

On the off chance this is Mother related, it’s very unlikely we’d be able to play it unless there was an official translation, due to the system that it is said to be in development for. It’s still far too early to know for sure though.

Mato said on Mar. 27, 2009

The ROID thing is actually more like just an online service, it’s not a console. With the service, you can play the games for it on your phone or on a PC, it sounds like it’s supposed to support both platforms at once.

If that’s the case, then it may be possible to play the game on PCs. I don’t know if they’d have some kind of “Japanese computers only” region lockout thing or not, but I’m pretty sure that if this EB clone/spinoff/whatever is real, we fans WILL find a way to play it. And you KNOW I’ll be covering it like crazy, and if it comes down to it, we’ll find a way to make it English somehow someway 😛

Sonicandtails said on Mar. 27, 2009

I have a feeling this is just a ripoff that isn’t related to Earthbound at all. Why would they mirror the flower tiles? Or reuse them at all?

PKNuMan said on Mar. 27, 2009

Geekboy20X6 said on Mar. 27, 2009

Yeaaaah if this is a game then it’s gotta be either Mother or Mother-inspired. Oh god I hope this is real!
I always thought the ending of Earthbound left it open for a sequel and while Mother 3 was a good ending we still don’t know what Ness did after Porky sent that letter. So it would be cool if they rapped that up with a game or something.

Rau said on Mar. 27, 2009

This screams two things:

Mother Zero (Earthbound -1) + Porky AND Ness Ancecesor OH MY DOG IT WOULD BE THE PERFECT PLOT

… Nah, that would be TOO much, but it does look a little based on Mother series

Satsy said on Mar. 27, 2009

This could be a product of certain artists moving companies. I’m pretty sure styles like this can’t be ‘copyrighted’ per se, so if someone did decide “We’re going over here now, this art’s coming with us” people wouldn’t be able to say too much. Especially if enough is changing.

And with that level of detail, I’d say nearly enough would be changing. 😉

roido said on Mar. 27, 2009

WTF i can acept this cause MOTHER is Officially from Nintendo… that means that Any mother game can be relased to another sistem than Wii or DS maybe they put this image for an error or something else.

Satsy said on Mar. 27, 2009

SO, Tomato, what is with the console?… There does appear to be some sort of console deal with a control pad, what’s that relevant to?

Also, I do like some of the other things that appear to be works in progress or games we’ll likely see at some point. They would be most interesting to see. No doubt with Studio Ghibli’s popularity outside of Japan, Level 5 would have a substantial base with which to release this at some later date… assuming it’s popular enough on the home turf first, of course. 😛

PKNuMan said on Mar. 27, 2009
Mato said on Mar. 27, 2009

Yeah, I’m confused about that too, but I think it’s just a model of the virtual game console that you interact with on the ROID website. If you do the demo, you see that you have to interact with it by dragging a game or video to the console to play it.

It still confuses me why they’d make a real-life model. From what I’ve read, I’m almost certain this thing is just an online-thing only, kind of like Steam is here. But if anyone has more detailed info, please let us know.

Raw said on Mar. 27, 2009

Guys, after examining the new picture, I’m gonna go ahead and call it: this thing is fake. Certain spriting choices make it apparent that this isn’t real:

-note particularity the grass as it connects to the path, in no ways does the pattern repeat, therefore it’s not a tileset. I for one don’t expect the creators of a new Mother game to hand sprite every path.
-In general the grass and path outlines look like they’ve been scribbled in with paint.
-the transition from path to road is noticeable awkward.
-the coloring of the character’s pants is noticeably awkward.
-undefined anti-aliased brown lumps in the grass.

In general, despite having more colors, it seems the spriting is worse than mother 3’s. The transitions between different objects is quite bad, and the lack of an apparent tileset is the nail in the coffin.

This looks like a fan game mock-up.

roido said on Mar. 27, 2009

for some reason i started to unite anithing and definitely that thing isn’t Earthbound I figured now And i see that the System makes That Earthbound umplayable what about the combos and jonings your favorite food and your Special PK…eh…trust me there is no mother game for that F$%& ROID.

madammina said on Mar. 27, 2009

I don’t see it as an earthbound remake, I see some similarities, yes, but it looks more like a “nod” scene rather then a remake. It’s too different.

dd said on Mar. 27, 2009

Nintendo published Level 5’s 1st Layton DS game in america so they’re on good terms. (So they wouldn’t just release a knockoff game.) And the Mother series isn’t exactly a cash cow so maybe they’re letting L5 borrow for publicity it as a friendly gesture in exchange for something…. Whatever the reason I BE EXCITED!

Pimpshi said on Mar. 27, 2009

I’ve had a gut feeling that this thing was fake from the get-go…and the surfacing of this image seems to reassure me that this can’t be real. Either that or I just refuse to fall into the trap of the Earthbound Curse (the get-your-hopes-up one, of course). Raw covered my thoughts fairly accurately, and of course it’s dangerously close to April Fools Day (why not right on Apr. 1? How many people in this community would call this out for being fake if it surfaced directly on that day?)

Hehe, if this somehow turns out to be legit then I’m gonna wet my pants. This is fun to follow regardless of what the result ends up being. Mato, is there anything new in the text on that site or is it essentially the same/not relevant?

Mato said on Mar. 27, 2009

It’s basically all the same thing, so it sounds like Level 5 just sent a press release/press pack to industry outlets. There’s no info about the screenshot either, they just call it a mysterious screenshot and then wonder what it is.

Satsy said on Mar. 27, 2009

I’m not willing to entirely dismiss it because of some path shading, although I am kinda wishing we had more than .jpgs to go off. It seems to follow some kind of system (4×4 – 8×8 tiles), but this is probably more promo than in-game. Kinda like the sprite-art on Itoi’s site. Y’know, the shots that were most definitely not in-game.

I also doubt that’s Ness. I’m most certainly sure that wouldn’t be Ness.

Kuri said on Mar. 27, 2009

You guys can keep going on about april fool’s day, but the chances of that are pretty low, given that it’s JAPAN. And Famitsu is a very repected and trusted publication, at that.

Mato said on Mar. 27, 2009

Yeah, I saw that, but that’s from last year’s unveiling of the ROID service. It doesn’t really help solve this mystery 🙁

Sam said on Mar. 28, 2009

About those “Roid” pics: The console is real, but the robot thing is fake–it’s more of an icon or a mascot for the system/service after that one video of it transforming. I don’t have links, but you can just google this stuff up. “Google that s#&*. Google magic, my friends!”

Ah, dane cook…Oh anyways, this looks VERY awesome! I’ll be keeping an eye out for this to the end.

Smash Bass said on Mar. 28, 2009

Regardless of if this is a Mother or not, it sure looks interesting, and I’m, uhh… anticipating this, I guess.

Lo said on Mar. 28, 2009

Going by the (albeit outdated) information in the link provided by none, we can see that the character in the Mother-y screenshot looks an *awful* lot like the little boy in the screenshots from the first game listed – Ni no Kuni: The Another World [sic] – which provides a plethora of further outdated information if you plunk it into Google.

So, I think I’m with MW in that it’s a bit of a publicity stunt/hype-generator. However, the game itself (from what I can gather) seems to have a pretty interesting plot that, after Mother 3, might appeal to a number of us anyway:

“It is a Role-Playing Game (Studio Level 5’s forte) about a 13-year old boy who blames himself for his mother’s death. But one day he gets a chance to enter a parallel universe inhabited by alternate versions of people he knows in the “real” world, and working from this strange place he just might be able to save her…” (taken from http://twitchfilm.net/site/view/a-trailer-for-ghibli-animated-ni-no-kuni-the-another-world/)

Perhaps this is only the beginning of a series of parodies on well-known games in Japan? Placing the main character in “other worlds” to generate a buzz?

Bowser said on Mar. 28, 2009

Isn’t the boy from the DS「ニノ国」 section the same boy from the screenshot?

captain_falcon said on Mar. 28, 2009

I don’t know. The environments are too detailed. But for all I know they could just be looking to upgrade.

I hope it’s not a PC game.
If by some chance this is another MOTHER, with no plans to come to the US, is it fair to assume another translation is going to happen?

Buta-kun said on Mar. 28, 2009

Woah, clearer it does look a lot more like EB, especially the little character.

one thing to note though is ummm it probably will kinda suck if Itoi isn’t involved? And I don’t know why he would be when he said he wouldn’t make any other Mother games.

If he’s not writing the scenario and dialogue, it’ll just be a boring rpg set in modern times, with a similar but worse graphical style, and lame attempts at humour probably

IronROB said on Mar. 28, 2009

I’am sure that,as many people here have said, this Roid game(assuming its real)will just be a new game with heavy MOTHER influence and since it will apparently be for PC and mobile phones, that just throws out any chance of it being officialy MOTHER-related for me.

Still the game could be interesting and that pic looks good but there need to be more info and pics then just this.

darkhamsterlord said on Mar. 28, 2009

From what Bowser pointed out, I’m guessing this screenshot is a publicity stunt, or something stupid like that, since the game this character is supposed to be in looks nothing like MOTHER..

Bowser said on Mar. 28, 2009

Probably, because they can’t just use edited graphics in the actual game like that.
It’ll probably be just a port of the DS game with the same character (if one exists).

Joshua johnson said on Mar. 28, 2009

aww, damn, I was so excited whe I saw th “New Earthbound Game” post, but it’s just some crappy phone game. I admit, It does have some comparison to earthbound.

FuzzyPicklez said on Mar. 28, 2009

Seriously. How could a game with almost exactly the same graphics as EB/M3 NOT be related to EarthBound in some way? “Could this be THAT RPG?” makes it even more obvious. Either we’ve got a Mother 4 on our hands, or Weekly Famitsu is feeding us Tanetane shrooms. Hey, I just invented a new phrase! What I mean by it is basically they’d be tearing at the scars of our hearts, like those mushrooms did.

Devin said on Mar. 28, 2009

Well, that’s that.

SmaMan said on Mar. 28, 2009

I think this is still in the air. Sure that link a few posts up definitely suggests that this is that game. But that “Another World” also supports the prequel theory. George and Maria mysteriously disappeared… of course, this George looks a whole lot younger than a George that would be married. But hey, he’s going to the “Another World” because he blames himself for his mother’s death? Sound familiar? (It’s a spoiler, but anyone who’s seen it will know what I’m talking about.)

While the boy looks the same, none of those screenshots look like the same style as the one we have at the top of this page.

Of course, this is just a hunch. Itoi’s a nice guy, though. Maybe he was a little mad that Mother 3 didn’t make it here, and has SO many fans here. *shrug*

SlaveQueen said on Apr. 27, 2009

This came out of a Japanese magazine right? Could someone translate it, I’m quite curious myself (I would translated it but I don’t Japanese that well.). The comparison is amazingly similar, but remember the scientist from Contact (a DS game) and how he looked like Dr. Andonuts.

I think it is a tie in game for Mother 2 to Mother 3 and how civilization collapsed. Just a thought.

Sam said on Apr. 27, 2009

Another thing since I’m looking at this again–and I just thought of this a minute ago:
If this ISN’T anything related to Earthbound/Mother, why does the caption in the magazine (in japanese obviously) next to this picture say “Could it be THAT RPG?!”…? If the screenshot was taken from “The Another World” it would have said so and been there with the other screen shots, wouldn’t it?

Also, the trailer for the game looks WAY different than what it shows here–The game is in 3D going through towns and such, not like this picture where it has an angled 2D appearance.

Some of you won’t give this a snowball’s chance in hell–Denying won’t help anyone. It’s not even a “possibly coming to America” blog, neither. We should let this form out until we have some leads as to what this really is, I mean…We don’t know ANYthing about what this is!

I’m thinking this could be what happened between earthbound and mother 3… Here is my theory: Ness and Paula decide to marry, they have a son named Flint, who goes on an adventure with a bunch of people however, when the game ends he suddenly loses his psi abilities and marries hiwana when he grows up (his helping friend like ness & puala) and settles down to have kids named Lucas & Clause.
