EarthBound in Nintendo Power 279

Long-time Starmen.Net readers may remember these from many years back.

Whoops, almost forgot this one:

I made those images after finding a way to hack EarthBound to make Onett look like Moonside, then I just turned everything red. Many laughs were had, but of course there were a number of people who believed it was real, even after the third pic 😛
Anyway, since these fake images are never handy whenever someone wants to reference them, I figured a small update on EB Central should help fix that.
There are other fake pics that caused similar reactions, and we’ll probably take a look at them sometime too.
But just imagine trying to play an entire RPG on the Virtual Boy. People’s heads would explode and the sky would turn red 😯

I think you should do a compilation of all the fake pics, rumours and whatever on April Fools Day, it would seem fitting.
Hah, how strange.
I remember really wanting a Virtual Boy, even after everyone kept telling me how terrible it was. <.<;
I actually really liked my VB. I had about 10 games for it, probably most titles that were made lol.
My virtual boy would do more than gather dust if EB was on it. The problem with the VB was that out of it’s 13 game library, only Mario Tennis and Wario Land were any good.
Mato! You’ve completely missed the point! We’re not talking about playing the average RPG on Virtual Boy, we’re talking about playing EARTHBOUND! on Virtual Boy.
Two words: Battle backgrounds.
(One more word: Giygas.)
Romhackers! Get on this! At least port Mother 1 to Virtual boy so i can play it in an emulator with 3D glasses.

Haha I remember seeing this but couldn’t get any pics except the last one :B

Isometric 3D would not benefit at all from being on the Virtual Boy.
Gosh I could never play Virtual Boy that much it would give me headaches. I think the only game I liked though was Wario Land. Anyway I wouldn’t want to play like this, remember that guy in Moonside who said something like: “If you stay here too long you will end up frying your brain.”

Oh sorry. I almost forgot to comment because my eyes were bleeding.
To be fair, only a few games on the Virtual Boy actually took advantage of “3d” technology, and the ones that did usually did a very poor job, like Red Alarm (think Starfox with all monochrome wireframes in an enclosed area, where you can’t tell whether you’re flying through a hole or into a wall). A VB Earthbound would actually make as much sense as most of the games on the VB library did.
Mother 1 might actually make a decent port. However EB would be a little bit too much for my fragile mind to handle.
Poor, misunderstood Virtual Boy. I still have one in my closet somewhere. The only reason I don’t play it anymore is that I only have two games for it. I should break it out one of these days…
As for Virtual EarthBound, It looks pretty trippy, but I’d play it. Just one thing…wouldn’t the Happy-Happists have to start worshiping the color red?
I love my virtual boy, and EarthBound would be a great addition to my game library.
I can only play it for about 7 minutes before eye-strain wares on me, though. XD
lol wasn’t there also some super rare bad guy that was a snowman in Dusty Dunes Desert?
I can see this working, if the battle backgrounds took advantage of the 3D aspect. Only change I can think of would be your dad calling alot more often about taking a break once you get the receiver phone.
Actually, now that I think about it, how would you do Moonside? Just invert the colors of all the sprites?
my already-bad eyes would just blow up if i played a RPG on the virtual boy XD
I still would kill for a Virtual Boy. I never sell any of my Nintendo games…as a collector, I need it. D:
I want to see how bad it ACTUALLY is. XD
“…hack EarthBound to make Onett look like Moonside…”
That sounds awesome, would you still have any pics?
From many years back…
So, you wouldn’t remember how to make the game look like Moonside, would you? I want to play it like that soooo bad. 😛

Looks sweet, but I guess playing for too long would hurt my eyes.

Heh, you’re inspiring me to dust off the old Virtual Boy and spend some time with Wario Land. 😉
As lots of other people have said, the VB wasn’t really that bad. It was too expensive and had no software support, neither of which helped it much. It was a fun novelty, though, and Wario Land was a decent game.
I still need to find a way to fix my VB…
the screens mess up sometimes.
that, or it’s the games…

People asking how to make Onett look like Moonside: It’s not hard, but I don’t have the time to mess with any of that stuff. Maybe someday I’ll make a Moonside patch that’ll turn everything Moonsidey except Moonside, which can be normal.
I would play it. It would be good if you wanted to play in a closed area.
Honestly, I find the simple red-on-black scheme really relaxing. You mentioned that you “hacked” EB to get it this way? That means, these aren’t mockups, this really works as a total game hack/mod?
Is it difficult, and/or can you post instructions?

I made those pics in 2001 so I don’t remember the exact thing I did, but I know there’s a control code you can use to change palettes on the fly, like what happens when you talk to people in Magicant. I did use a program to make the screenshots all red, though. But you could always edit all the palettes in the games to use shades of red too.
I can try to make a full Virtual Boy-ish hack at some point, but it won’t be for a little while at least.
Ok! If you get to it and it’s easy, I’d love to see it. Otherwise, you’ve done far too much for the Earthbound community (and myself as a part of that) for me to ask for anything more.
Thanks for posting them at the very least!

Actually, I found out from ROFISH this weekend that it’s really easy to hack a super nintendo game to run on the Virtual Boy, so this is Starmen.Net’s next big project. Now that we’re done the M3 handbooks, we’ll get started on “EB on VB!”
No duh it didn’t look real, because you missed one major thing… Virtual Boy can’t have good games without fat Mario rip off (I’m talking about Wario)!
I’d play it.
I liked the Virtual Boy…
