Tips for Buying EarthBound

February 7th, 2009 | Auctions, EarthBound, Merchandise

A few astute people have notified me about a completely new and unopened copy of EarthBound on eBay. Given that the game is already rare and that used sets can go for $200 or more, I can’t help but wonder how high this one might go.

I can’t remember what the last new copy sold for, but I think it’d be fun to try to predict what this one will go for. Any guesses? If only I had gone and bought a bunch of the games back when there were stacks of them in the bargain bins at Toys R Us and K-Mart and stuff. Darn! I wonder what one might do with a mint, unopened copy like this. Didn’t someone put one in an airtight display with a lock on it once? What would you do if you got one?

Anyway, I don’t know why, the pic above is just screaming for a caption contest for some reason. So let’s all come up with some good captions/pics for it. Do good and you could win eternal praise and glory!

UPDATE: It’s very possible it isn’t as new and unopened as the auction makes it out to be. See here.

UPDATE 2: rofl, I just watched someone super snipe this at literally the very very last second. Went for $192.50.

POLL: What would you do if you got a new, unopened copy of EarthBound?

That is really awesome. As for a caption, how about: “Earthbound, thinking outside of the box.”

I just became the high bidder at 53.00, I don’t expect to win at all, but it’s still kinda fun.

I wish you hadn’t posted this; I have it on my “Watching” items, and I wanted to get a low price on it, he hee.

Oh, for reference anyway, the last complete Earthbound box I saw went for about $400, but that one wasn’t wrapped in plastic wrap still.

Waaaaahhhh
Already 15 bids
Actually thanks to this I just saw the back of an EB box for the 1st time.

Man I really hope someday I’ll get a credit card with enough moniez on it to afford one of those babies

Mato said on Feb. 7, 2009

Heh, don’t worry Emily, it’s already been on the SM.Net forums and on the random ads here. EB Central is still new so it doesn’t get very many visitors anyway, so I wouldn’t worry much. It’s gonna go high no matter what anyway.

If I had money to throw away, and an SNES, I… probably still wouldn’t buy this, but wow! Awesome!

Dan Bruno said on Feb. 7, 2009

Hmm, this question is at the bottom of the listing (emphasis mine):

Q: if i open it and it’s not complete or i’m not satisfied, can i still get my money back?

A: Thanks for asking this question. Since there are bids I can not revise the auction. I found the game cartridge in a seperate plastic container with the same number tag on it. I will email the winner and ask if he still wants the game and box since it is used. The players guide may be in the box, but I don’t know! And yes I will refund if you are not satisfied.

Sounds like it may not be mint after all… 🙁

rofl that’s really weird. I wonder what the deal is. Guess we’ll find out soon enough!

Ultra said on Feb. 7, 2009

lol it seems really aspergers to bid extra high on a MINT SEALED VIDEO GAME when you can get exactly the same thing, except a bit scruffier, for like half the price

these are the kind of people that hate writing in books, right?

One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure 😉

Poe said on Feb. 7, 2009

Dan Bruno – thanks for pointing that out. From that picture, it doesn’t look like it’s professionally shrink-wrapped, so I was doubting its “mint” status. I really don’t think there are any mint copies of EB left anymore.

JB2448 said on Feb. 7, 2009

I’ve got a caption:
My mint, unopened EarthBound box is beckoning to all of you Starmen.netters who don’t own me.

Yeah, I know it’s stupid.

I’m gonna persade my Dad to not give me allowence for a few months and in return he’ll help me win!!!!!!!

KingDarian said on Feb. 7, 2009

EarthBound was never shrink-wrapped. From the looks of it, the game store that this game came from removed the game from the box and then shrink-wrapped the packaging so it wouldn’t be damaged while on display.

Your text about the bargain bins is making me once again cringe at the fact that I never bought the game when it was being sold for $11 at Best Buy in 1999 D: D: D:

I bought my game used on the Internet for $30 later that year and ordered the guide from Nintendo. I still don’t have the original box(though I do have the inserts from a friend who bought the game new). If I had the cash to spare, I’d jump at the chance to get a “new” copy, but thanks to that darn starmanz site the game is in high demand and sells for too much. Why can’t it be like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and sell like-new for $15 on eBay. 😛

Darien said on Feb. 7, 2009

On the bright side, there are several other, better ways in which it’s not like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. 😮

It’s been so long since I saw an unopened copy of Earthbound. Now I wish I didn’t open my copy.

ZombiePaul said on Feb. 8, 2009

I used to work in a record store back in the day and we used to re-shrink wrap CDs and Movies if they were damaged/returned. There is a distinct difference between what original, factory shrink wrapping looks like compared to stuff re-sealed at the store.

The very first thing I thought when I saw the pic was that it wasn’t in it’s original shrink wrap. The large wrinkles on the edges are a big tell. Too bad, eh?

Blueman said on Feb. 8, 2009

“MINT SEALED”, eh? What an oxymoron. And yes, I have read the article/listing, its not actually new. But still… “MINT SEALED”

Dan Bruno said on Feb. 8, 2009

Mato: While I appreciate the link to my website in the “see here” link, I don’t actually mention this auction there 😉

Mato said on Feb. 8, 2009

rofl, I copied the wrong link, I shall fix it now 😛

Whoa, this guy might be a rip off. Sorta like today when I saw two SNES-ES and three controllers going for 2.25. My Dad bit 25.00, but I think I’m going to get a picture of two SNESEs and three controllers. Whaaaaatever.

rofl, I just watched someone super snipe this at literally the very very last second, beating out other snipers. Went for $192.50.

winwithlink said on Feb. 18, 2009

I’d bet if you win this that package you’d recieve in the mail would be a garbage can(instead of a box) and when you open it a note would tell you. You’ve won a Mint un opened copy Earthbound… maybe

ScottKO said on Feb. 21, 2009

If I got a new unopened copy…wow, just the thought of holding it in my hands gives me butterflies in my stomache…
I could never open it if I got it though, I mean, maybe I would eventually but it would feel so right yet so wrong. An item like this seriously has alot of power.

Stuffgamer1 said on Feb. 23, 2009

I would keep an unopened copy in that condition until such a time as my current copy stopped working. But I don’t believe in the idea that unopened games are worth more than opened ones, because I just want a game that I can *gasp* PLAY!

I guess it only went so “cheap” because it was found to not be quite so unopened after all. Still, I can’t help but be happy I didn’t pay ANYTHING for my copy (apologies…don’t like to brag, but…)!

DanteAMD said on Apr. 4, 2009

I got my copy for a present when I was like 4… I wondered why the hech it didn’t work on my SNES. I got a new SNES for a present ^^
The game was never oficially released here. And. BTW, I still have an unopened copyy of EB, or should I say M2?
(Never opened it cause I learned not to trust other regions)

HazyShadows said on May. 30, 2009

When I got ahold of mine, I just.. Stared at it for a while. Honestly, I was afraid to move, for fear that Ronald Mcdonald or something silly like that would break through the windows and steal it.

Ultra, that is offensive to people with Asperger’s. I should know. I have Asperger’s.

someone has to enjoy it, and it’d make you feel like a kid again opening up a game from the 90’s and playing it on the NES.

I’m a fan of playing Earthbound, not looking at it.

PK Rockin said on Mar. 17, 2012

One of the options for the poll should have been “Keep it for a few years and sell it”. That’s what I would have done.

Stinky Ghost said on Dec. 2, 2012

I know this is ancient… Still, I don’t think that Earthbound was shrinkwrapped when released? I could be wrong, but I don’t personally remember it having one.
