Tips for Buying EarthBound

February 1st, 2009 | EarthBound, Uncommon Knowledge, Videos

I had heard about this before, but I never really looked into it. But yesterday, while browsing Japanese sites, I came across an actual video of it, with documentation on how to make it happen. Basically, there’s a small glitch in the game that will let you walk through walls, stairs, and other stuff without resorting to cheat codes 😯

Here’s what the deal is: Get a status affliction that will reduce your HP over time. You might not know this, but when someone’s HP gets really low and they have a status affliction, the game will give you a warning message.

Now, if you’re standing on stairs when that message happens (I think it takes really precise timing), you can walk through the stairs after the message goes away. The game then acts like it does when you use the Walk Through Walls cheat code.

Since all maps in EarthBound are just part of one big map, you can walk to any part of the game now. You can tell where you are based on the music. If you want to actually see where you are, then just use the Sound Stone (which is what the guy does here). Consult this full map if you’re not sure of how to get wherever you want to go.

You could probably use this to get through the game a lot faster than normal. I’m curious as to where the first place this exploit might be doable in the game. I thought it might be Twoson because of the UFOs that give you colds + the stairs in the dept. store, but those are escalators, so I don’t think that would work.

I’m sure speedrun people might find it useful for something though.

I noticed something about this. If you walk through walls in EB, and you go to Giygas’ lair, you automatically become robots. Apparently it doesn’t work that way in Mother 2. Or maybe I’m wrong. Care to clarify, anyone?

Mato said on Feb. 1, 2009

I think if you found the walk through walls code for Mother 2, it’d act the same way. This glitch is different from the code though, so that’s probably why it acts differently. I bet if you tried this glitch with EB, it’d do the same as in the video.

Wow, that’s cool.

This is a straaange glitch. I would probably use it to skip Peaceful Rest Valley next time I play Earthbound, if I’m not lazy to try it.

I’ve GOT to try this! 😀

lol, they’re Moon-walking!

My, MOTHER2 is one of the most glitchied games I ever saw.

Was there a testing sequence in the development?
It’s still fun to see all those things like Double enemy, Circus Tent and Stair glitches

Mato said on Feb. 1, 2009

Yes, see here. But it’s not like this kind of stuff is stuff you would think to try. It took 15 years for this one glitch to be discovered, so I’d say they did a pretty good job.

Cool, I need to try this out for speedrun. 😛

Wow! Someone finally managed to do it. I’m glad to know I’m not crazy and imagined this happening. Lol. It’s been so long that it’s hard to remember.

But when I had this happen to me, I don’t remember using healing. As soon as the warning popped up, Ness went straight instead of up the stairs. Does you have to use healing or is it just used because it’s annoying having the screen flash all the time?

Mato said on Feb. 1, 2009

Yeah, you don’t need healing, the guy was just healing her because it was annoying or because he didn’t want her to die or something.

Wow, This looks cool. I’m going to try this out on my next run through EarthBound.

This looks awesome, I’ve got to try this, does it work in Mother 1+2?

JB2448 said on Feb. 2, 2009

It just goes to show you that glitches are still found in games no matter how old it is!

*they are.

If you need stairs proper and not just an escalator to pull it off, the earliest I can think of would be the underground tunnel in Threed. It’d be easy to get poisoned, too, thanks to nearby Zombie Dogs and their angry fangs!

I am confused on this part, does it mean it takes precise timing to get to the stairs, or precise timing pressing the buttons, or what?

You can use the walk through walls code to also access fourside in a complete moonside pallete

I tried to do the walk through walls glitch in the video by getting a cold and going up escalators, and it didn’t work. I am not sure if it was the cold, or the escalators, but it didn’t work.

Mato said on Mar. 25, 2009

I doubt it works with escalators, as they’re programmed completely differently.

FuzzyPicklez said on Mar. 29, 2009

So THAT’S how Giygas and his followers travel through time without having to become robots!

Shamu said on Jun. 3, 2009

Damn it, this doesn’t work on MOTHER 1+2.

It would work on escalators if they didn’t pull you down right away, you see it get glitchy when you try to do it on them.

WALK THROUGH WALLS: EASY WAY
Get an enemy that poisons you up to stairs. When you get poisoned, go to the stairs and stay there until the message shows up.

David said on Jan. 17, 2010

It works when I do it, but if I try to go somewhere, it just has a blue background, it seems like summers (the place I did the glitch is the only place that you can see stuff in.

David said on Jan. 17, 2010

never mind I just didn’t read the post right. For people that haven’t been able to do it, try to get exactly at the top or bottom step. It’s impossible, the game will force you to move off it. that’s when you need the warning to come up.

Ness can MOONWALK!??!?!
