Tips for Buying EarthBound

February 26th, 2009 | EarthBound, Merchandise

Continuing with the latest post I made about Banpresto’s giant Mr. Saturn plushes, I realized that even with all this middleman stuff, they’d never really know what the demand outside of Japan is. So, if you’d like to let Banpresto know that there’s demand for Mr. Saturn plushies outside of Japan (and other MOTHER merchandise in general), here’s how you can do it.

There’s no e-mail contact information on their site, but there is an office address for customer support here. So, if you’d like to send a small letter to their office, here’s the address to send to:

Mr. Masahiro Toyokawa c/o Banpresto Co., Ltd.
4-12-2, Shinagawa Seaside West Tower 2F
Higashi-shinagawa, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo-to
140-0002, JAPAN

If you’re going to write a letter in English, keep it very short. Maybe 4 sentences at most, and try to keep each sentence at 6 words or less. And use very simple English, and use verbs and nouns only. And don’t use cursive writing. If you’re going to write in Japanese, do NOT use an automatic translator. Only write in Japanese if you actually know Japanese. Trust me about all of this, you’ll only confuse the recipients otherwise 😉

Also keep in mind that if you write “Mr. Saturn”, they’re not going to know what the heck you mean, they’re called “Doseisan” in Japan, so use that term instead. Letters should be something very simple like this:

I like the big Mr. Saturn (Doseisan). Please bring Doseisan to America. Thank you.

It will also help add to the effect if you draw a Mr. Saturn or two. And only send one letter, otherwise you’re just harrassing them and being an ass.

I don’t know how much postage is to Japan, so you might need to check at your post office to see how much postage will be.

POLL: Have you sent a letter?

Poe said on Feb. 26, 2009

Cool! I’m definitely gonna do this.

SillyStell said on Feb. 26, 2009

How about Europe to huh? I know Earthbound was never released here but but… Europe needs Earthbound love too… *sniffle*

On a serious note it would be great if they did end up shipping em worldwide!

Mato said on Feb. 26, 2009

Heh, it was only an example. You’re free to put what you want.

SillyStell said on Feb. 26, 2009

I know, I was only having a laugh with ya’ XD

Difegue said on Feb. 26, 2009

Hmm, it’s a good idea, I may send them a thing

satsy said on Feb. 26, 2009

I’ll be sending a letter — I did look for an e-mail after responding to that last post, but, naturally, wasn’t successful. 😉

I’ll send my love for this stuff… ~<3

cool, I want one of those

kurowoofwoof111 said on Feb. 26, 2009

The cost to ship anything lighter than 5 lbs to Japan from the United States is about ten to fifteen dollars.

MW said on Feb. 26, 2009

I am totally doing this.

flyinghippo said on Feb. 26, 2009

I just enveloped my letter. I used the example paragraph, but I added some illustrations. It was fun!

hollow leviathan said on Feb. 26, 2009

You used an adjective! You broke your own rules!

Mato said on Feb. 26, 2009

Haha, yeah, I was waiting for someone to point that out. I also went over my own word limit rule 😛

kurowoof: that’s for packages, shipping simple letters is much cheaper, I’ve sent many letters in my time, usually comes to like a dollar. Maybe it’s gone up since the last time, pretty sure it’s not that expensive though.

Darien said on Feb. 27, 2009

Does “Doseisan” have a literal English translation, or is it more complicated than that?

santiagoff said on Feb. 27, 2009

Dosei is Saturn , and san is a suffix meaning something like Mister. San iss more of a way to show respect , or so I believe. I’m not too sure.

Darien said on Feb. 27, 2009

Ah, so it is very similar to “Mr. Saturn,” then. Neat. I was wondering if they made the Mr. Saturn name up out of whole cloth, or if it had any connection to the Japanese.

ZombiePaul said on Feb. 27, 2009

Done my letter and I think I’m going to draw a few of ’em on there as well. Mato, you should discuss posting this of Starmen.net with Reid as well; I’m sure that might get us some more letters 🙂

Spyden said on Feb. 27, 2009

I may try to do this…

Tokoro said on Feb. 27, 2009

Ah, I’ll definitely be sending a letter. Sounds like it might be really fun. :3 I’d send them one of my little Saturn figurines, but I think the whiskers and stuff might break, so that might not be good.

I shall practice my drawing skills :3

Tokoro said on Feb. 27, 2009

Uh… Mato, is there anyway you might be able “Proof-read” my letter? I’d like to do it in Japanese if possible, but I’m not really that good yet^^; (I’ve done about a year and a half through college) I wouldn’t want to cause confusion, or y’know, be insulting somehow.

If not I’ll just do an English letter^^;

cj said on Feb. 27, 2009

I think if you get this news on starmen people will be all over it on an even higher degree. I would add extra emphasis on the “only send one” part though. Just in case people try to go “heehee PK Mr. Saturn siege” up in the joint.

I’ll see what I can do regarding a letter. I’ll talk to my friends too~

Life with Louie said on Feb. 27, 2009

Dear Japan
I am excited. I am happy.

“Dosei san” brings joy. I am American.

Bring to American.

PS I love you

jpeezy said on Feb. 28, 2009

id love to send one..but im seriously doubting theyre going to make them in america despite our efforts. 🙁

Lothis said on Feb. 28, 2009

I wish I could write a clever letter to them in English, something like:

Boing! Zoom! Where Mr. Saturn? Can do all for America!

and then I’d make sure it was in the Mr. Saturn font… *sigh* all these clever ideas going to waste…

MaskedMan said on Feb. 28, 2009

If I would, I would make a micro-manga with my very basic kana-only Japanese…

KingDarian said on Mar. 5, 2009

D:

My Japanese contact wasn’t able to get one of the first 500, BUT there is a second series on the way due to the high demand. The deadline this time is March 22 and there will be a 100% guarantee to get one. 😀 They will ship out in June.

Mato said on Mar. 5, 2009

Yeah, I’ve heard that an e-mail was sent out, but I’m still trying to find a copy of it so I can translate it and make an update about it 🙁

KingDarian said on Mar. 5, 2009

I asked my contact to forward me the original message for just this reason. Hopefully it arrives soon.

DanteAMD said on Mar. 29, 2009

Does “Daisesan Plushies look good. Please bring Daisesan plushies to America.” sound good?

DanteAMD said on Apr. 6, 2009

Actually… it doesn’t, because I live in UK xD

Ryden said on Jun. 9, 2009

My friends B-day is coming up by the end of June and if there is anyone who could personally help me get one (even if I won’t have it by then) that would be awsome and I can pay you. Im not rich though, my friends and I are just REALLY obsessed with Mr. Saturn. Like, “Pwah” is the most said word in our conversations. We draw Mr. Saturns on every page of our Notes and draw them on every blackboard in the school. This would be the most epic gift in the history of epic-ness. My E-mail is;
“CurseOfEvilTim@gmail.com” (It’s an Ed, Edd and Eddy refrence)

P.S. Has anyone got one of these yet?
~PWAH

(Again, thats: CurseOfEvilTim@gmail.com) THX

PLEASE RESPOND BY EMAIL. THX! YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!
