Tips for Buying EarthBound

January 17th, 2009 | Auctions, EarthBound, Merchandise, Uncommon Knowledge

Not many people know this, but there was actually a card game based on the slot machine brothers in the Dusty Dunes Desert! Not only is it an official product, but it was made by APE itself. Besides this game, I know Itoi has also been involved with creating a ramen card game (however that works 😛 ), so it sounds like he likes this kind of thing.

Anyway, I mention this right now because there’s an unopened copy up on Yahoo Auctions Japan right now, and it ends in 19 hours. Sadly, it’s pretty hard to use YAJ unless you know Japanese AND live in Japan, or if you’re willing to pay quite a bit extra by using a go-between service like Celga. It actually seems to be at a pretty cheap price right now, too. I’d have picked it up myself, but I can’t really afford to buy unneeded stuff right now.

Apparently, it’s actually a pretty exciting card + dice game, and fast-paced. The games don’t take long as far as these kinds of games go, and they’re played at card game tournaments/conventions in Japan apparently. Not many people know about it, but it’s appparently a really well-made game. I think there are some more details/pics here and here.

That second site includes some very basic rules, but it’d be nice to see the cards and pieces and all that stuff first before I do a real write-up. So if anyone gets this, or if anyone ever gets ahold of one later on, please let me know more about it! I really wantto know more about this thing, and maybe even make an online version. And maybe make drinking game rules 😛

POLL: Did you know there was a Slot Bros. card game before you read this?

I like this because Nintendo started out as a playing card company, didn’t they? They haven’t lost their roots!

Holy crap. There’s a whole world of products that nobody ever heard of before.

So that’s what that thing is! I remember seeing it on a random google search ages ago and not knowing what the heck it was. It sounds pretty neat. Now if we only knew more…

And there are four brothers on the case. What does THAT mean?

Hmm… 4100 Yen for it… That’s like, 50 bucks though, I think 🙁

For something so rare and unopened, that’s an INCREDIBLE price, actually.

Someone needs to buy it and scan all the cards. We can have our own Slot Brothers Card Game League!

PSI Guy said on Jan. 21, 2009

Oh man, let me get this straight: an out of print novelty card game is played at tournaments and crap. That seems really weird, considering that the game is considered very rare.

I never noticed that the slot brothers have fruit on the sides of their boxes.

solidpit said on Jan. 27, 2009

Is it a children’s card game?

Mato said on Jan. 27, 2009

No, it’s for anyone.

Kousuke said on Mar. 4, 2009

The children’s card game post was a reference to Yugioh abridged, mato.

and it’s weird to find something so rare at that prize, I’d buy it but the economy in my country won’t let me do it.

I never played with the Slot Brothers in Earthbound, EVER.

@Hunter: you’ve seriously been depriving yourself.

@Mato: I got an already opened set of this game a little while back, and I definitely would love to see translated rules and a PC game at some point. I’ll be shooting you a message with scans later.
