We all know Shigesato Itoi created the MOTHER/EarthBound games, but beyond that, people outside of Japan don’t seem to know very much about him. I plan to write up a nice-sized article about that very subject in the next week or two, but while putting together materials for it, I found a bunch of funny photos from his office.
He owns his own company and employs like 30 people or so, possibly more. His company and his site (see here) are tremendously popular and it’s no surprise that his office is just as wacky as his games are.
Here are just a few pics from the collection of crazy/cool/strange office pics I’ve come across. And these aren’t rare pics, they do all kinds of this crazy stuff almost daily!
Also, someone NEEDS to take Itoi out of these pics and then animate him to some kinda music 😛

I will feel happy and fulfilled if I can get a job in an office as laid-back and goofy as his.
Every time I see Itoi’s office either nothing is happening as I check out the fish tank, or something crazy/awesome/crazyawesome is going on. The site’s awesome too, I try to check up every few days on their Animal Crossing thing and I’m still wondering how I’m to get at some of that music…
Haha, that’s awesome. He is quickly becoming my favorite game developer. 😛
Itoi is so lucky, but someday I’ll be able to have fun while doing my work. He’s my inspiration, truly. 🙂
i love the picture when they’re all lying down xD. reminds me of mr saturn

Aw, but you didn’t cut Itoi out of the pics. I was hoping someone would make a .GIF of it, like with my weird sumo guy .GIF 🙁
Actually, they don’t make games there, Itoi is up to a whole bunch of stuff besides making games.
Thing is, i don’t really know what it is Itoi does besides having made four games, atleast not one that requires an office :O
Anyways, he’s something called a ‘copywriter.’ I’m not really sure what a copywriter does, i think it is that he makes slogans for different products, but it’s probably more/something else. Tomato or someone else can probably explain it better.

Don’t worry guys, I’m pretty sure Mato will describe Itoi’s real day job in the huge article he’s planning. I used to think Itoi was strictly a game designer too, but that’s absolutely untrue. He only makes games once in a blue moon, while he spends the rest of his time doing a million other things. I’m eagerly anticipating the knowledge that we will soon receive!
I wish Itoi was my grandfather or some member of my family. He seems like he’d be the coolest relative a guy could ever have.
I mean, who else wears clown noses just for kicks at work? 😀
Itoi is seriously my hero. He epitomizes what I’ve always wanted in life: not to grow up, but to simply grow older.
I added an extra frame and his dog watching him. XD

Couldn’t do anything about the white border around them though…sorry. XP

Am I the only one who’s thinking Numa Numa? I’ve seen him do crazier things.
I was actually thinking about this a few days ago. Itoi’s English Wikipedia article is awfully short of information for someone so important; I think anyone reading it would assume he mostly does video games, and that’s all most people in the west know him for anyway.
Are you gonna include more biographical details in this article you’re writing? His life in general seems really interesting, and I’d love to know how he got where he is. Like, from what I can tell he dropped out of college, but then what? It’s hard trying to decipher stuff from Google Translate D:

Picture 8 = Itoi & co. Paper
LOL
This is great, they are such goofballs. I’d freaking love to work at a place like that.
…But it’s weirder for Americans to do it, for some reason. Why is that?
Itoi is my hero. It’s funny though, because when I tell people that, they think it’s because he made the MOTHER series and I’m just some insane fan. No, it’s because of stuff like this. He is so awesome.

Itoi is a wacky 60-year old eccentric.
I wonder what could be best than that. :l

That Itoi animation reminds me of that classic sumo wrestler gif that Mato used to use back in the day, when I was incoherent and a compulsive liar. 😛

They were as crazy as the Developers of Incredible Powers (APOGEE 1996, America.)! When I look at Itoi, I thought, “He acts just like Tom Hall.”.
But I bet they don’t shoot water rockets inside the office during power outages.

Most people in the creative industry need a highly developed workplace culture to produce original work.
… but I’ve never seen a workplace culture – that – developed. Not in my short life.
Its funny that as of now, no one has voted no on the poll.
Heck I’d love to have an office like that, my job doesn’t have to be boring.
I’m really looking forward to the Itoi article! I hope it includes details about what he does at Hobonichi, and some cool details about his life!
Thanks for taking the time to do so, tomato!
Actually, I just made a little animation for an Itoi Dance M3-Styled Sprite, but I don’t have a GIF animator.
Okay, I got something, so here it is.

Funniest Dance Ever. Second to The Wess Dance sadly. But it has POTENTIAL!

Man. When i Work at Nintendo when i get older, i wish i get a Pk Rockin office like him! He’s my inspiration. When i first played EarthBound(Which made me get into Rpgs) Made me want to make RPG’s As a grownUp.

Hey Ness, Itoi doesn’t work at Nintendo. He has his own company that does a ton of stuff completely unrelated to games.
![]() | Poe said on Mar. 8, 2010 |
Don’t want anyone thinking the wrong stuff is all.

I always thought that “copywriter” was a pseudo translation, but it turns out it’s correct: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copywriting
If I ever have my own company, I’ll make it so February 29th is the only day we DON’T act weird. ;D

They create things for marketing, right? They’re probably trying to find good ad material.
man..im jealous of him, not because he made an awesome video game series.. but because of the enjoyment he has with his life. I hope i can have that much freedom and fun when im older
I hope I’ll be that eccentric when I hit 60 or so.
