Tips for Buying EarthBound

January 20th, 2009 | Interviews, MOTHER 3, Rumors

According to Siliconera: Brownie Brown says they’d love to make a DS version of MOTHER 3, if they were ever asked to.

“If we were asked to make one [a DS version of Mother 3], then we would definitely like for fans abroad to play the game,” Kameoka-san said.

Of course, that doesn’t really mean much and doesn’t mean there are any plans in the works. The interviewee was simply saying that they’d love to work on a DS version if Nintendo and/or Itoi decided they wanted to make a DS version. Will it ever happen? Who knows. But it’s still nice to hear something like that from Brownie Brown, even if their menu programmer caused my brain to explode a few months back 😛

I hope they do!
It would be sort of weird, though, after playing through Mother 3 on the computer.
Do you think they’d change Kumatora’s name?

I’m still trying to figure out how a DS version of M3 would work without doing something lame like have one screen constantly be a map screen or a status screen. I’ll keep an especially close eye on Itoi’s site anyway though 😛

MotherFTW said on Jan. 20, 2009

Oh sorry Mato. But yea I’m not getting my hopes to high either.

Paige said on Jan. 20, 2009

Actually, that doesn’t sound that bad to me.

It would be pretty neat to have a map/status screen (to always be able to know where you are (Had some trouble with this in Chapter 5) and your current status (sometimes, I forgot how much HP I had left on certain characters.)

It’s amazing how something like this gave us, Mother fans, hope once again for a Mother 3 port. I just hope this goes through and turns into something great.

Mato said on Jan. 20, 2009

To see characters’ statuses and HP/PP outside, you can just press Select.

Paige said on Jan. 20, 2009

i know

I didn’t find out about it (when I could have used it more effectively) until after my first playthrough.

but with the second screen, who needs a select button?

GoldenEevee said on Jan. 20, 2009

If Mother 3 was imported to the DS, how would it utilize the two screens, especially the touch screen? If a DS version is made, and Comes in America, I will buy it right on the day of release, if it only comes out in Japan, then I just have to stick with the old Fan translation, OR I WOULD REBEL AGAINST NINTENDO OF AMERICA TO DEMAND THEM TO RELEASE MOTHER 3 DS INTO NORTH AMERICA AS WELL AS EARTHBOUND ON VIRTUAL CONSOLE!!!!!!!!!

TheReaper09 said on Jan. 20, 2009

I think it will be release in the DS but only for Japan again because when its release the ds will be a dying system just like the GBA was and a NA release would require lots of censoring.

ColdasIce said on Jan. 20, 2009

i hope they put all 3 games to the DS.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was Mato exploding after people demanding for him to translate Mother 3 DS :0

gBev said on Jan. 20, 2009

They could utilize the two-screens in a similar way to the way they did Chrono Trigger, with battle on top and commands on bottom, for Mother 3 maybe they could have HP/PP on top too, and command details on bottom. Maybe it could even have the ‘classic mode’ option, too.

Smash Bass said on Jan. 20, 2009

I think that if Mother 3 is re-released for the DS, there will be greater chances for it to be released in America than the other Mother games.

mitch said on Jan. 20, 2009

too little, too late. bleh.

Q said on Jan. 20, 2009

You tap the bottom screen to choose a target, and to combo to the music. This allows for hitting other enemies than the original one with your extra combo notes.

satsy said on Jan. 20, 2009

I think the only thing that gets me about this is the ‘if we were asked to’ comment. That means nobody’s asked (except an eager interviewer), so it really does depend.

It may also be a few years before we see one. It was, what, 8 years after EB that we saw 1+2? 😉

*must learn C# and C++*

madammina said on Jan. 21, 2009

That would be fun.

Although,I hope they don’t censor anything either or do a sloppy job. I’m sure Mato and Crew did a great job (I don’t emulate) and I know they worked hard so I would hate to see that work thrown away on a heavily censored badly translated thing to just shut the fans up.

vivi3000 said on Jan. 21, 2009

I think it’s cool that the dude from Brownie Brown would say this, but at the same time I definitely am not getting my hopes up over this. If it happens, then that’s great. But I’ve become pretty skeptical of things like this over the years.

Anonymous said on Jan. 21, 2009

They could use the touch screen to expand the amount of stuff you could see on screen… so you get a bigger map vertically anyway… but that wouldn’t work at some parts at all.

But news of possibility of Mother 3 for DS = 😀

PSI Guy said on Jan. 21, 2009

You guys know how EB had smooth scrolling screens, while Mother 3 has new screens every now and again? Maybe the screen not being used could show the next screen (eg north of where you are) and when you go to that area, you smoothly go from one screen to the other?

KingDarian said on Jan. 22, 2009

They should use the top screen to show Dr. Andonuts tapping away at a chalkboard.

Leirin said on Jan. 22, 2009

This is good news! I just got the game for Christmas though, so I don’t care too much about a possible DS port. However, the fact that Brownie Brown wants it to be played by fans internationally fills me with joy. Nintendo of America is being so bad-arse about releasing this game. It sucks so bad.

I envisioned the top screen displaying a map or something, like the ones you find in green present boxes or get from Mapson. Or, maybe something like what PSI Guy suggested.

Poopskin said on Jan. 29, 2009

Perhaps if they do make the DS version they could re-implement some stuff that might’ve been cut due to space restraints? i’m pretty sure DS chips hold more data then a GBA Game Pak.

If they do this (which they should), they should try a slight modification of the Ouendan/EBA battle system. It’d be awesome to have a bit more interactivity into the rythym system, wouldn’t it?

SmaMan said on Feb. 22, 2009

If they want to release Mother 3 on DS, they should go all the way and make it the Mother Trilogy and release all 3 games once and for all! But then I can see all the EB/M2 legal wounds being ripped open once again and then we won’t get it… again. 🙁

Well here’s hoping anyway! 😀

They should’ve released it on the DS the first time considering it was already out, but I still like the graphics of MOTHER 3.

Thenumber1yoshi said on Mar. 21, 2009

As unlikely as it sounds I just wish they would do this (though you have to remember despite your worry of them censoring stuff Mother 2 got it’s fair share the black rectangle and *bleep*s as well, I mean Ness ran around Magicant butt naked his freakin’ birthday suit, do you really think Nintendo of America was going to let such things fly and please understand that this was pre-Conker’s Bad Fur Day so Nintendo just wouldn’t allow stuff like that) but its probably not going to happen even if they did make it it would never be released in America or pretty much anywhere due to the copyrighted content (which is the same issue why Earthbound/Mother 2 is never coming to the virtual console) Mother 3 also has issues with copyrights for example the Mr. Batty music is too close the famous Batman theme, and NLC isn’t playing ball Nintendo of America wants changes to be made to avoid lawsuits yet Nintendo of Japan is not accepting of said changes, if they can’t agree to changes of the second game just for a measly virtual console title, what makes you think they will all agree to making changes to an actual game for a major Nintendo game system? Despite all that I’m probably the only one who could deal with the changes so long as they don’t ruin the storyline (like going 4kids on the game and censoring Hinawa’s death by saying she didn’t die something else happened to her, but I know Nintendo is good about keeping the concept of death still in their stories I mean I read from a Trophy in Brawl Samus’s parents were killed and that was something the Metroid series kept in tact) I actually wouldn’t mind them censoring a few other things I find it kind of creepy to see Lucas naked in the Hot Springs when theres an old man who’s also naked in the same hot springs, and one thing I definitely wouldn’t mind being censored is the cussing (words like ass, damn, dammit bastard, ect.) thats something I didn’t like about the fan translation, I usually try to keep My mouth as clean as I can (unless I get so upset that I’m blinded by My rage) so I had to censor Myself while reading some of the text, if there was one thing I respected about Nintendo it was that most of their games didn’t have anything overly mature in them (and even when they did they were censored when Nintendo of America got their hands on them)

They proved that a game doesn’t need blood, guts, swearing, sex, gore and and overly violent in order to be fun because most of the games I played from them only had cartoony violence (I hardly count Conker’s Bad Fur Day because Rare made that game and they just happened to be with Nintendo at the time and when Nintendo sold them they took Conker with them along with all their other violent games and besides Nintendo kind of didn’t even like the concept and what they were doing when they made Conker’s Bad Fur Day hence why it got so few advertisements and why Nintendo basically sabotaged those sales and why Conker did as poorly as it did when it hit shelves)

So all that cussing really felt out of place in a Nintendo game (considering HAL is one of the people who makes Earthbound and has also been known for making Kirby games) I know DK64 had the DK rap and at one point it goes “One Hell of a guy” but it was mad by British developers and in the U.K. Hell isn’t a swear, and besides they censored that part for Smash Bros., heck even Earthbound itself only had the word Crap and it wasn’t even said that much also crap isn’t a swear word its not even at the same level as damn.

So it just felt really weird playing a game where it said Nintendo and someone who wasn’t Rare but rather one of Nintendo’s parties who isn’t known for swearing
and reading swears in them, I just felt uncomfortable playing a Nintendo game that had swears in it (and that Rare didn’t even have a hand in making) but i can tell you if it had been an actual Nintendo translation team none of the swearing would be there.

And I have to agree with Claus they should have moved their project from the GBA to the DS when they were making it. Its not like they would have had to make the project 3D like the N64 just because the DS is able to imitate the N64’s graphics plenty of major Nintendo titles on the DS have been in 2D Yoshi’s Island DS and all the Kirby games on it so far were in 2D and if we’re talking RPG titles well Mario and Luigi Partners in time decided to stay 2D and so did the third Mario and Luigi RPG game. They didn’t have to make the project 3D, in fact the graphics could have looked even better and still have been in a working field they could have been able to handle (since they’re better with 2D and had no experience with 3D) also another person I kind of agree with Smash bass if they had released it (or re-released it) for the DS there would be a small better chance of it coming across seas but only on certain conditions first off if the creator’s truly want people abroad to play it they’d have to be smart and use the most current DS and if they’d have to let go of their we can’t let you change this and that about the game attitude towards the U.S. branch of Nintendo and the NLC would have to stop being the way they’re being as well.

Also the touch screen and Dual Screen doesn’t have to do anything too major, I’m sure they could work something out not too many games (even major Nintendo ones) use it for too much stuff these days other than to get through option screens and for a map anyways, besides I’d kind of like touch screen control for the menu, I have so much trouble getting around with the keyboard, and besides in some cases maybe its best to use a system despite the fact it has a gimmick (I just know the 15th anniversary version port of the first Sonic the Hedgehog game would have turned out better (even if just slightly) had it been on the DS instead).

Thenumber1yoshi said on Mar. 21, 2009

Also they said if they were “asked” to make a DS version of Mother 3, meaning someone has to approach them about it which is kind of unlikely, I mean I know fans would approach them in a heartbeat but it has to be someone major inside Nintendo itself. I mean, who would ask them to? And also Mother1/2 for GBA(when it was still alive) almost made it here but that never made it here (when the system was still alive and kicking). I’m not trying to rain on your parade I would love Mother 3 to come over here with an official translation as well, but it almost seems impossible.

Well I suppose you could start off with trying to know anyone major in Nintendo who we could get to ask them to make a DS version who would want to send it overseas. It never hurts to try, so i wish you guys luck.

Thenumber1yoshi said on Mar. 27, 2009

I also have a slight theory why the American branch is so hesitant to revive the Mother series. It clashes with their family friendly image, I mean if they know the second game got the word crap (which I know isn’t even a bad word but its still something you normally don’t hear in Nintendo’s more friendly E-rated games) gets past the radar, the Happy Happyists who are blatantly called a cult with religious referrences intact which is really treading on serious territory for an E-rated game, already seeing that the main character walked around in nothing but his birthday suit at one point (I know this was edited but if they’re aware of this then it should turn them off from going back even more) and even though we now know that the Giygas final battle was just something Itoi remembered wrong and that it wasn’t really a rape scene from a porn movie that inspired it, there are some people that are still unaware of that, and I guess if Nintendo of America at least knows that they’re probably one of the many who still thinks that was what inspired the last boss.

So add all that with some of Mother 3’s stuff that clashes with their family friendly image and put that all on top of the fact that the two games have a cartoony look to them seeming innocent, and they probably think its way too serious and mature for over here. In fact I posted an article here before it got modded(guess I shouldn’t have quoted it) that Nintendo of America didn’t like the serious plot and themes with the cartoony look and that was one of the reasons they denied the first release (and because of the stuff in the game that would probably land them on the news in a bad way)

But I do pray that one day that whatever the reason for Mother 3 not making it over here, I do pray that one day that (if this article is true and this is really what Brownie Brown said, because I also pray this wasn’t a part of an EGM article because it’s nearly April and you know what April and EGM articles mean) Brownie Brown does get to do what they want here and make Mother 3 for the most current DS and I also pray that by some miracle its brought over here so we can all enjoy it the right way. I also pray I live that long and the world doesn’t end by or before then.

Thenumber1yoshi said on Mar. 27, 2009

You know sometimes, and I know they said they would never do this, but sometimes I wonder if we would get a reaction out of Nintendo if Starmen.net ever did decide to sell their translation for profit (or anyone else for that matter) I wonder if then all of sudden Nintendo of America would start to care that someone was making a profit off a Nintendo game in English other than them (especially if even illegally it sold well) and if they still didn’t care I wonder if it would get a reaction out of Nintendo of Japan and if that would cause disagreements between the American and Japanese branches of Nintendo, all I know if something drastic like selling the translation illegally to make a profit off of it isn’t done we’re never going to see anything happen (because I assume Nintendo would only care if they saw someone other than them making a profit off one of their games in English and thats when they care and actually do something, they’ll only care when it’s not them making the money but rather someone else at least I assume so but I do know the Japanese branch will care and I pray it causes disagreements between the American and Japanese branches of Nintendo).

Thenumber1yoshi said on Mar. 27, 2009

You know I just hate the fact its just so unlikely for this to actually happen, I fully understand how you guys feel, and as as a fan of this franchise (I’m fans of others so this is just one of them but I still understand your pain) that has played Mother 2/Earthbound through twice and supports the fan translation and just feeling powerless to be able to make Nintendo do anything, seeing what Nintendo does here just hurts. It’s like seeing one of your closest friends be abused and neglected by their parents and not being able to do anything about it or make a difference for them.

Bobbyjkl said on Mar. 27, 2009

A map would be useful. Maybe a status screen? I died so many times on level 6, it ain’t even funny. 🙁

Thenumber1yoshi said on Apr. 15, 2009

Hey Mato (I’m pretty sure I’m talking to the right guy), anyways are you at all curious how their DS version would be compared to your fan translation, I know it might not ever happen but I’m just wondering if you’re curious about how they would do things in their version (since they want fans abroad to play the game)and then see the things they did as opposed to what you and your team did, and maybe if you’d be curious about seeing some of the stuff you guys weren’t able to do but wanted to or if you’re curious about some stuff you might not have thought of doing,

I know I’d be curious about what they would as opposed to what Me and My team did with the game if I were you and someone who created the game had wanted to create a DS version for shores outside Japan, I’m not saying it will happen, just asking if you’re curious about what they would do if they ever got the chance.

the retard of epic proportions said on May. 8, 2009

They could make the touch screen be like pokemon diamond and pearl where it would switch to different settings by hitting a button, It could be all sorts of things, maybe even a timer to see how long you can beat a boss in. I would love to see a DS port, they could even add in some extra side quests to do along the side of the game, but of course, then it would be weird playing it with the Mother 3 handbook.

ST said on May. 24, 2009

@Mr. Crosser. Like Chrono Trigger DS, they can add extra stuff and even make a satisfying epilouge. You know, one that says if the world was peaceful or not because happiness, friendship, sorrow, and loneliness are all in Lucas’s heart.
-New Sidequests for extra PSI
-Added EX Chapter
-New Game Plus with EX Chapter
-The best one:New Game Plus with EX chapter only availible if a certain thing was accomplished. Like leaving one person alive when Claus finally snaps out of it and stops killing everyone off and takes off the helmet.
-They could offer classic and new modes that are changeable.
-A theme setting with RGB customization.
-Optional Bosses that make you wanna cry.
-Icluding the dummied menu uncovered in Mother 3.
-Giving it a sub title like Star Ocean 3:Till The End Of Time or Earth Bound:The War Against Giygas(Mother 3:The Dark Dragon Ressurection)
I have ideas. Rated T for Teen for Suggested Themes, Cartoon Violence and Violence

RadicOmega said on Dec. 26, 2011

If Brownie Brown says that if their fans fans ask for a remake of MOTHER 3 for the DS, then why didn’t they start.

I honestly don’t see what is up with this “Buissness” route they are taking, with avoiding their fans. I know the whole legal issues ( if you don’t see here http://earthboundcentral.com/2009/02/earthbound-legal-issues/ ) but if Nintendo tried, they would have had EB on VC by now.

A ton of people have been saying that Nintendo doesn’t hate us, and they say the people who generally say that are just having their hurt feelings getting in the way. But Nintendo does SOMEWHAT care, but honestly, they don’t want to go threw the trouble.

It is as easy to go threw the game and edit the bad stuff, then to simply ignore us. Reggie said it himself, they don’t need our “audience” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRQkXJAcKHo

Well, he basically says it. But really, can someone explain to me how ignoring a large fan base makes money? It is simple math: FANS+GAME THEY WANT= BIG MONNEY. The legal changes cna be made, and if the creators of MOTHER in Japan don’t want a change, then they can go with a large jar, and filling it up with $100 every day.

And are the legal issues even that bad. A quick Google search tells me that music changed from original isn’t 100% illegal. Simply changing the music can do. (But some of the music is too similar, and HAS to be changed)

And also, some earlier post on another post, already said this, but you can’t just wake up and say “You know what? I’m going to sue Nintendo for using the first four notes of a song” It doesn’t work that way. It costs money to sue, and there is no gurinti you will win.

And also, their are other targeted “issues” other then Nintendo. I can go sue Harry Potter for using the first nine notes of “Jack in a Box” in their intro.

So just a tally up and a sum: Nintendo isn’t trying to get EB on VC, and they clearly don’t “Care” as much as we think we do.
