Tips for Buying EarthBound

January 26th, 2009 | EarthBound, Merchandise

OK, this is some crazy, unexpected news. Banpresto, the same company that did those MOTHER 3 Mr. Saturn plushes, is doing a MOTHER 2 Mr. Saturn plush campaign. I’m not clear on the fine details just yet, but it sounds like they’re only making 500 for now. With tax and everything added in, they cost 12,000 yen, and because of limited quantities, things will be handled in a lottery-type system in the event more than 500 are requested. Preorders are from Jan. 23 to Feb. 28, and they’ll be shipped out sometime in late March.

This Mr. Saturn plush is the largest ever – not counting the hair and bow, they’re 45 centimeters tall, or approximately a foot and a half high. HUGE. The hair and bow are flexible and can be set however you want. They’re also packed inside special “Escargot Express” boxes for extra nostalgia.

If you want to skip straight to the informative and flashy part of the site, click here.

For the size of these things and for the limited number that’s being made, 12,000 yen is actually a pretty good price. The problem is, I don’t think it’s open to people outside of Japan, so unless you got connections or some sort of middleman, getting one of these might be crazy tough. No doubt about it, though: these are going to be some of the rarest and most wanted EB-related items ever 😯

UPDATE: Some more pics here!

Poe said on Jan. 26, 2009

I can imagine this thing reaching $500 or more on ebay someday.

mitch said on Jan. 26, 2009

Yeah. All things considered, these would cost someone in the states closer to $200 USD (with a good friend in Japan who can ship you the Mr. Saturn without gouging you). But, like Poe said, selling this in the States would probably push the price up to about $400 – $500. I mean, these things are gonna be RARE.

I gotta say, I’m highly considering buying one.

Zaxtur said on Jan. 26, 2009

Starmen.net should buy up all these pluses and give them away as prizes… to me.

Aerostella said on Jan. 26, 2009

Uhh… yeah. I think I’ll stick to making my own plushie. I definitely don’t have that much money to spend on one. XD

I want one
I want one so hard

For a mere 200 bucks *o*
If only I could buy on the Internet D:

Getting ahold of one of these will be tricky. I don’t even remember the site that got ahold of the arcade machine ones… That was tough running, even then!

Technically I’d still prefer the art book… But at least then, I might have an advantage should someone with a book desire the plushie more. 😉

ShadowX said on Jan. 27, 2009

Oh wow, these are gunne be so hard to get. And I am not talking about getting it through preorder. I’m talking about people selling these on eBay and Yahoo Japan Auctions. Gunna be one of the rarest most sought after items!

Mato said on Jan. 27, 2009

I’m wondering how much just the boxes will wind up selling for on eBay. I bet they won’t be cheap either 😛

Difegue said on Jan. 27, 2009

Actually, I just hope somebody will make a scan of all the faces of the Escargo Express box and make it available, you know, like the game boxes models.

This would be so precious to print 😀

Leirin said on Jan. 27, 2009

I find it strange that they’re suddenly releasing Mr. Saturn plushes. Similar case was when they started printing Mr. Saturn stickers, eventually leading up to the release of Mother 1+2 on GameBoy Advance.

…Mother 4?

Naw, let’s not jump to conclusions.

Hey Mato, could you please translate that site? I need to convince my father it’s reputable.

Mato said on Jan. 27, 2009

It IS reputable. Dunno how I’m supposed to prove it to someone who can’t read Japanese, and I don’t have time to translate an entire site.

If it’s any help, look at the links on the very bottom of the front page here. It’s got all that kind of stuff that major company sites have.

It doesn’t matter anyway though, because the online signup form doesn’t allow for non-Japan addresses.

Yay for Celga! Changed my mind on the whole “broke student” thing.

waehofen said on Jan. 27, 2009

I honestly know that I can’t get one, but I want that thing so badly!

Master of Ramen said on Jan. 28, 2009

Hey, if you go to Japan, you’ll get the 12,000 Yen for free!

Now all I need are tickets to Japan…

Mato said on Jan. 28, 2009

Heh, you’d also need a visa of some sort to get the alien registration card that you’d need to get the free money. Too bad I’m not studying there anymore, I could’ve totally used that money for food.

Zaxtur said on Jan. 30, 2009

“Things will be handled in a lottery-type system in the event more than 500 are requested.” I’m confused, if you order a plushie and are one of the unlucky people who still doesn’t get one, do you get your money back? Or are you basically paying 12,000 yen for a CHANCE to get a Mr. Saturn plushie?

Mato said on Jan. 30, 2009

You don’t pay anything until later, when it’s decided who gets to buy one.

Zaxtur said on Jan. 30, 2009

But I’m trying to do the Celga.com thing, and they want payment before they’ll process the order. Maybe this is something I should be asking Celga, but you might know, Mato. If I pay through Celga.com and then it winds up that I don’t get a plushie, will I be refunded? I’m just afraid I’m gonna spend close to $150 and receive nothing in return.

Mato said on Jan. 30, 2009

I’m sure that any respectable company would refund your money in such a case. You’ll want to talk to them of course, not me. But I’m sure they refund money all the time because they’re in the auction-bidding business and not everyone wins the auctions they bid on.

KingDarian said on Feb. 7, 2009

Did anyone else notice that there are three pedestals on that page, and the Mr. Saturn is only sitting on one of them?

Could there possibly be more giant MOTHER plushies? :O

KingDarian said on Feb. 7, 2009

Oh, bah! I’ve gotten in touch with my Japanese contact and I’ve asked them to register on my behalf. I want one of these bad boys.

Hurray for tax returns!~

HossTehMaster said on Feb. 18, 2009

They should ship them out in phase distorer shaped boxes in stead. But seriously thoses plushies look cool. I would love to put one on my shelf and take it down whenever playing EB or heck any game.

DoseiSan said on Feb. 18, 2009

Do I get moneys back if it goes to lottery and I lose? And if it does go to lottery but I was in the first 500, do I still get one?

Mato said on Feb. 19, 2009

You don’t pay beforehand. If you’re chosen in the lottery thing THEN you’re allowed to buy one.
