Tips for Buying EarthBound

January 13th, 2009 | My Crazy EarthBound Cart, Videos

A while back, I decided to start a new game on my EarthBound cart, because I hadn’t played the game on cart in like years. So I named my guys and all that and started playing. I didn’t notice it right away, but somehow all my starting stats were insane 😯 Somehow I had 255 for all the stats and for HP and PP I had some really weird numbers. And I was only at Level 1 (I started taking pics/vids at Level 3) 😯

Anyway, I decided to play through the game like this, and to chronicle things a bit. My hope is that other stuff in this save file is messed up too. Maybe some event flags might be set that will make the game crazy at points. Or, at the very least, I hope the other characters’ stats are crazy when I get them. We’ll see.

For now, I played from the start all the way through Giant Step. It took probably like 5 minutes, because I tore through everything so easily.

This’ll probably be a short on-going series here, but if anyone has suggestions for stuff to try, lemme know and I’ll try it if I can!

Wow, that’s pretty insane.

I love how you SMAAAAAASH!! the enemy every single time.

I think you should try only using weak equips, and see if you can defeat Tough bosses, and Giygas.

It also looks like you’re having some not-so-crazy graphical glitchiness as well. You should look into this some more.

It must feel good to be playing Earthbound again…
although it doesn’t compare to playing it like a normal person, I’ll forgive you. I cheat all the time…

Heh, I remember you posting those pics on some topic in Starmen a few months ago, Mato.

It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

That’s really freaky. My dad would like it, he likes EB but gets frustrated in combat way too easily.

…I didn’t even know HP/PP could exceed 999, and it looks really funky when it does.

Aurilliux said on Jan. 13, 2009

I like how you *have* to get back-attacked to even fight anything other than the bosses/forced battles.

Peaceful Rest Valley is gonna be sooooo easy! Man, you’re lucky.

Most damage dealt to a runaway dog EVER.

Tsukihime said on Jan. 14, 2009

I have to say, that is awesome. You should take on Ness Nightmare with the weakest equips!

satsy said on Jan. 14, 2009

Heh, it’s the max stats code. 😉 Or a glitch or something. Still, cool!

The only problem you’ll really run into, is when you’ve gone through Magicant, or if you equip stat-changing items. :p Watch those awesome stats fly right on down the drain~~!

Difegue said on Jan. 14, 2009

Haha, garbled HP-Meter

Tansunn said on Jan. 14, 2009

@satsy: Do the stats really roll over if you get more when you’re at the max? That sucks!

Mato said on Jan. 14, 2009

As you can see in the video, I’ve been leveling up but my stats haven’t been rolling over. Is there something up with that? Or does the Magicant stuff not even check for > 255 stuff?

I dunno if I showed it or not, but I did all the stuff in that video with the Cracked Bat and no other equipment. I basically just walked straight to each place you gotta go, no shopping or talking or anything.

You should do this play-through without fighting any enemy’s except for the required ones

Lampdevil said on Jan. 15, 2009

That’s odd, it took three crazy SMAAAAAASHes to kill the ant? Must be some other stats somewhere in there that aren’t quite right…?

Artemis251 said on Jan. 15, 2009

This reminds me of a glitchy file that my Zelda II cart made. I had maxed HP, Str, and Magic, but my Experience Points were still at 0, so I got a life every 50 XP I got. While this is sweet, the maxed HP was somehow ineffective – even a Bot did 1 full bar of health per hit. The Magic was also fake, as Shield cost 3 blocks of magic! I was thus stuck in the first area because I didn’t have enough magic to cast Jump. In any case, my herculean strength destroyed the first temple!

It’s odd that the stats don’t rollover. I wonder what Paula will be like?

Geemer said on Jan. 15, 2009

Lampdevil, he attacked the Black Antoids first.

This reminds me of my Super Metroid cartridge that suddenly decided to equip me with near infinite energy tanks and 255 of every ammo type. It crapped out the next day, though.
Hope that doesn’t happen to your cart, Mato.

Lampdevil said on Jan. 15, 2009

Geemer: Ah, right, dude. In the video I didn’t even see the lil’ guys. My bad!

Hm, I wonder what the other character’s stats are going to be like?

Smash Bass said on Jan. 15, 2009

Sweet! It’s fun when glitchy things happen to games, but maybe your cartridge is having some illness. 🙁 Watch out, Mato.

This also happens when you use a game genie. cause ive done it before.

Chatetris said on Feb. 18, 2009

Woah I never even got my Level so high that I did 1000 damage

HossTehMaster said on Feb. 19, 2009

Woah, is every thing at its max? 0_0

gwocks said on Apr. 27, 2009

I used that rock candy trick and got insane HP and PP once… it shows the HP in the stats screen but during battles it’s all space alien language and barfy looking symbols. It was cool.

How you did that on the first level is beyond me though… weird.

someone not important said on Apr. 29, 2009

What I noticed is that the stats are normal (or at least more normal than they look), they’re just hidden. It’s really just the display that’s wacky. Like how it said that the first sanctuary boss became tame three times before it actually died. The stats are higher than normal, though, even if they’re hidden. Maybe it will go back to normal at some point. You should try another game slot and see if it’s the same way.

Tamuro said on Sep. 24, 2009

This is why your stats aren’t going over 255: That was the maximum hex value for the time being. (0-255. Meaning 256 hex values.)
These days it’s more than that. Even Mother 3 goes more than that – I believe it can get further to about 512 hex values by hacking. Otherwise it’s there so that it doesn’t max out.
