Tips for Buying EarthBound

Today’s song is Pulling of the Needles. This plays during Chapters 7 and 8 of MOTHER 3. This is a case of another song that I feel does the job it needs to but it isn’t really particular special. But it’s possible I feel that way because I had to test Chapter 7 so much that I heard it to the point that it lost all meaning. Kind of like if you repeat a word over and over a lot in a row, it’ll suddenly seem to mean nothing 😛

I love this song, so neat!

Off topic: what is that embedded music player you are using? I’ve seen it elsewhere so I am curious… sorry I really should be PMing this but…

The start of the song kinda reminds me of the intro to Earthbound (the screen with the UFOs).

I don’t remember when EXACTLY this tune plays when you’re pulling the needles; that is, wheter it plays before, during or after (I should probably play Mother 3 again), but the constant repetition of the same four bassy notes against the background of techno-y sounds gives me a feeling of a “calm before the storm” – a storm indeed, as being one step closer to awakening the Dragon (and the releasing of all that red smoke and the flashing colors!) is a huge event.

Of course, that also reminds me of the contrast between the needles and the landmarks of Earthbound and Mother 1 (which I haven’t played it) – collecting bits of a song. When I first played Earthbound I kept trying to guess what the next Your Sanctuary song was, and having gone through so much trouble to get to all of them I was quite pleased when the Sound Stone played the whole tune (and added harmony, to boot)! I guess that the difference between the cheerful, hopeful Sound Stone tune and the somber pulling of Needles reflects the difference in plot – whereas in Earthbound the full Sound Stone is sure to awaken new powers for Ness, in Mother 3 you don’t know wheter the pulling of the needles is for good or for bad until the last one is pulled (and actually, not until a while after that)…

Yeah, I saw other blogs using it and I was like whoa I want that! You can get it here. I’m not sure, but I think there might be a version that works with non-wordpress stuff too. Look around the site and see what you can find.

And Pishi totally destroys my description of the song 😛 You’re right on many counts there. I guess I do have a case of overhearing it. Maybe in a year or so the game will be less familiar to me hopefully.

Then again, while it IS moody, it’s really just the constant repetition of the same four notes over and over again – you hear them twice or thrice, it’s the calm before the storm, but I can see how it can easily get in one’s nerves if you hear the loop for longer than that…

Unlike Smiles and Tears, which is rather catchy.

Yeah, it’s one of the few songs in the game that really threw me back to the “aliens and neon tubes” motif of Earthbound — especially the intro, which definitely has a bit of a “meteorite crashing into Onett” feel to it.

I like the song but I don’t have any particular attachment to it. I like that foreboding sense it seems to convey but other than that it’s not a huge thing.

Somewhat unrelated, but my favourite song from M3 was the one that played in Chapter 6 (which was uncoincedentally, my favourite chapter) while you were wandering aimlessly through the sunflower fields. But I notice it doesn’t seem to be in the Mother 3 sound player and I can’t find it anywhere. Any ideas?

Every time I heard it, my mind went “BLADE RUNNER”

I guess it shares a similar mood?

I love this one!

It’s so ominous, it makes me feel like I made Lucas do something bad, even though it’s for a good cause. Forcing him to gradually end the world and the long life of a Magypsy, even though they seem very enlightened about their destiny.

This just isn’t the same without the sound effects that are perfectly timed to the song each time it plays in the game…

your music posts are definitely my favorite part of your blog. thanks for doing them. my favorite song is definitely the tank song from MOTHER. Maybe tied with No Eating Crackers in the Cinema from MOTHER 3. I like that instead of playing a song from mother 2, they made an 8-bit version of a great song. The 8-bit version isn’t in the sound player, I wonder why?
