I know this is old by now, but it’s something that deserves to be revisited, just in case anyone is still able to sleep at night.
Behold, the alagamation of a fast food peddler and a universal cosmic destroyer 😯
One of the things I really like about EarthBound is that it’s not entirely what it seems. At first, it seems like a lighthearted game – you’re just some boy who lives in a simple town, the graphics are almost kind of Charlie Brown-ish, and you fight hippies and slugs and stuff. You know, stuff normal kids fight 😛
But as you go along, it gets weirder and weirder, slowly but surely. By the end, everything’s freaky as hell. And that could be taken literally, even! Your souls have been ripped from your body, you’re stuck in a horrible place in the past, with practically no hope of ever returning, and then that’s when the crazy stuff starts happening.
I think the key is in the moods the game can create – if something’s weird, it’s genuinely weird and not just weird to be weird. Same with scary – things in this game are scary, but not cookie-cutter “boo” scary. And maybe not scary to the player right away, but if you imagine yourself in said situation, you’d actually be pissing your pants non-stop. And when there’s evil stuff, it’s not just “ooh, look at me, I killed lots of people, I’m evil!” You’re actually like, “Damn, that guy’s crazy evil.”
And when I see videos like the one above, I realize this all even more. The video’s so awesome because Giygas isn’t your regular boring villain. He’s seriously messed up. The video wouldn’t work at all with Kefka, or Sephiroth, or what have you. It’s crazy too, because you don’t even see or hear about Giygas throughout almost the entire game. But he’s so iconic and different. It’s impressive that Itoi, who isn’t really even a game designer, could come up with something like this.
And that’s why I still want a Giygas plushie that can talk.

^ You’ll probably regret it if you’re afraid of clowns. Clowns don’t freak me out, but this video is CREEPY.
There’s something about Giygas that I really love, and I think you hit the nail on the head by saying he’s different from a lot of the cliche villains that are thrown at us in other games. He’s…special.

Love this video. I love how insane it gets. The facial expressions and the “DAISUKI DAISUKI DAISUKI DAISUKI” along with many other things just make this video…hardcore strange.

I’ve shown so many people that video. Some know who Giygas is, some don’t, but all are scarred and get Ronald’s cackle stuck in their heads.
I think you’re right about the moods that the game sets — I’ve come to the same conclusion a number of times. I still can’t believe how this game can be hilarious one minute and dead serious the next, and you’re tugged right along with it. There’s something awesome behind Earthbound.

That is probably an accurate depiction of what Ness’s gang was hearing during the Giygas battle: Distorted voices yelling different phrases all at the same time, like “Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness, Ness…” and “It hurts…It hurts…” along with the eerie noises(after the first form, it couldn’t even be considered music anymore).

giygas is the (THE!) boss battle that still terrifies and amazes me everytime. i come for earthbound’s witty script, sharp soundtrack and fantastic story, i keep playing just so i can experience that one moment when the game itself seems to be tearing apart at the seams.

It’s all FLandre Scarlet of Touhou’s fault. Someone did a vidoe of ROnald to her theme “UN Owen was her?” and somehow it migrated to Giygas.
Also, I don’t really like villians who don’t taunt their heroes or are mindless monsters. Kefka is better because he’s NUTS!

I thought the intro part was funny then al off a sudden BAM japaniese Ronald Mcdonald starts acting like Giygas. This just made my fear of clowns kinda worse. And Kefka’s just insane and funny at the same time while Sephiroth he doesnt creep me out let alone to me he’s annoying.
