Tips for Buying EarthBound

January 31st, 2009 | EarthBound

Just now, Giegue (the Starmen.Net visitor, not the evil alien) posted a TrueType font that looks exactly like the font in EarthBound. You can download it here and read his post here, where he explains stuff, including how to install the font if you don’t know how.

Here’s what it looks like. Pretty nice 😀

Now, you might be thinking to yourself, “I already have the EarthBound font on my computer! What’s the big deal?”

It’s a big deal because the old “Orange Kid font”, as it was called, was actually pretty inaccurate, especially when it came to the spacing between letters, so it often looked like barf whenever someone tried to use it. And oh god the number of flukes that used the old font just made them even worse 😛 It was almost like the Comic Sans of the EarthBound community. But now there’s a new, actually accurate EarthBound font you can use on your computer. Hurray! Thank you, Giegue!

I was wondering when someone would fix the Orange Kid font! This is great, I’m glad I come here.

I wasn’t terribly familiar with the old one (or even aware it existed), but I followed that link to the flukes you posted, and was startled at how bad the old font was, particularly lowercase v.

Actually… There was already an Apple Kid font as well. o_o SM.net used to have it, alongside the Orange Kid font. The AK actually sized properly, whereas the OK font didn’t, I remember that much.

I used to have it on my ’98 machine some years back. I don’t think I transferred them over though, so it’s still interesting. 😉

As I recall, the old Apple Kid font was actually the Mac version of the Orange Kid font. Or something like that. It was a special Mac version at least, so maybe that’s why it was more accurate, I dunno.

But now there is accuracy for all!

I like how Orange Kid was the incorrect font and now Apple Kid is the correct one. Heee~~

Excellent!

The Orange/Apple thing is pretty funny.
Anyway, that’s a perfectly game-looking font, I was actually looking for a nicer one than OK.

Thanks again Giegue!

Awesome 😀 But there’s too much space in front of the little j. 🙁

I also wish MSPaint still had that clickybox in the text tool to disable anti-aliasing. They removed it in the Vista version for some reason and it makes the font (which is supposed to look pixel-y) look bad. :\

Glad everyone likes it! You can also check that forum post for other EB fonts I’m making, including a better Mr. Saturn font which I’ve already finished, and the introduction (“The year is 199X…”) font which I’m currently in the process of making

I love the new font! I’m using it on IRC.

I’m guilty of using the old font – on my EB0 Enemy Database project. Personally, I never saw anything wrong with it.

Hell yes. I’m certainly using this for IRC, Foobar2000, and other things.

I feel a bit dissapointed in myself for not being able to find words to express how much I like this. Well, at least I helped a bit with the flyover font.

But again, thanks. This is awesome.

Aweesome! Too bad it doesn’t have as many letters as the Orange Kid one, such as accented vowels and special characters.

Drütopa said on Feb. 8, 2009

Orange kid supported diacritics, and this new one does not. Boo.

I did notice the spacing problem with the Orange Kid Font…

Erm.. It won’t let me download it.. it keeps sending me to this page with random letters and incoherent nonsense, Help? D:

Right-click and save target. Your browser is most likely trying to display the .ttf as a text document.

I made a fluke featuring this font. Link: http://img412.imageshack.us/img412/1196/fluke.jpg
