I thought that for sure there was going to be a MOTHER 4 because when you beat MOTHER 3 the screen says “END?” it says end with a question mark! I think the 4th one should be for the DSi and the main character would be Sid like Ness and SNES. Sid sounds like a good name too doesn’t it? There should be new pk moves like dark, aura, light, surf, earth, and others.

Altough this has nothing to do with Mother 4 but have you heard of a fan fic called “Ultima the Crossing of the Universes”? well Ness and Lucas are in it with other characters from various cartoons,video games and movies. itoi stinks.i dont have 1 mother game but im dying to get 3.i think that earthboundcentral.com and all of us should make mother 4 where lucas ness ninten are on a team with rika from higurashi.we start off with rika and then porkey somehow finds here and sends here to ninten.they team up with ana for a little bit but then they find ness.but lets make the game challenging and LONG it is more fun if its long.

You could get MOTHER 3 on your computer if you’re dying to get it. Don’t torture yourself if you want it that bad. And if MOTHER 4 picks up around the same time as 3, then Ness and Ninten and everyone from MOTHER 1 and 2 except Porky and Dr. Andonuts (is that how you spell it) would be dead.

M3’s composer did an extremely good job. He captured the spirit of the original Mother games, which he didn’t compose music for.
So if a different composer is able to accomplish that, I think a different game designer might also.
But I still have hope that Itoi will eventually get to making a new Mother game. Itoi gives me the impression that working on M3 was intense and tiresome; it’s only logical to reply with a firm no when posed with such a question just after M3 was done…

You know I’ve been wondering for a long time the look on Itoi’s face looks suspicious to me at 0:02. What could he be up to?

Anyway Itoi’s mother games were great. It had funny, heartwarming, creativity in all the games. Even if the series is over I’ll try to get as much information as possible on Mother 4.

I’ve already been working on MOTHER 4 for a while!
So far, it’s gonna include all the MOTHER 3 characters
(Lucas, Kumatora, Duster, Boney, Flint, Salsa) With
the addition of two new characters. The game takes place after the final needle gets pulled in M3. This
game is actually more like EB because there are several towns(referred to as towns in EB until i can think of some cool names). It’s gonna be on DS too! sadly, all
of my ideas remain on paper ’cause i don’t know how to make my own games… But one day i may ask for lots of people with good technical skills to help me
get the game started. I’m planning for the game to be very long for those of you who thought Mother3 was too short. And out of the two new characters, one of them will be able to use PSI! She’s more like a combination of Paula and Jeff because she’s very smart and can fix small machines like Jeff and like paula in that she’s actually the equivalant to Ness’s Paula and Ninten’s Ana. Yup, that’s right.
She’s Lucas’s girlfriend(since he was severely lacking one in M3) The other character…
well all i’ll say is that by looking at my user name, you can probably guess what it’s gonna be.
(He may not be able to use PSI though, I’m barely
just getting trough the first few parts of the game so PSI will be one of the last things i work on)
Even though I say that, I’ve got The ‘New Girl’s’ PSI completely finished. (I just need animations because her PSI is PK Beam and alot of other PSI’s from the original EB0) I’m planning for the game to have a party member system like Chrono Trigger, in which once you get over four party members, you’ll be able to configure your party to you liking.
As you can see, I’ve got the game pretty thought out, but i still need to actually get the game to a playable state. First, I’m gonna finish the story and THEN I’ll ask for technical help.

summons guigas (also from mother not mother 2) but using the light needle you beat the leader and then giugas. well these are my ideas for the future. crossovers are great but i only have 2 stories which i came up with.

Im going to (try) to make a 3d game called Mother Heros. Ninten, Ness, and Lucas will be in it, warped back in time to their 12 yr old selves. Also, a choosable 4th character can be chosen of Ana, Loid, Teddy, Paula, Jeff, Poo, Duster, Kumatora, Clause, and Boney. Why Clause? Because Lucas gets a wish, and it is that his mom is alive (YAH!) and also Claus (FIINALLY). The story is that Giygas apparently had a son (I’ll make up a name later), and he screws up Picky Minch’s mind (also young like Ninten, Ness), and he becomes evil! All the games’ worlds will be 3d and present, and there will be a new battle system!

Why do people [still] expect him to make a MOTHER 4?

Hell, after spending 12-13 years trying to bring the story of MOTHER 3 outside of its development hell, wouldn’t you think he’d likely not want to make another MOTHER game? Honestly, if he’s done with ise series that’s his choice. He said that a MOTHER 4 was already “out of the question” far before we got the GBA version. He even just stated recently that he’s done with video games for good. I definitely wouldn’t blame him. He’s had a wonderful run, and he should get all the respect he deserves.

Now trying to bring MOTHER 1 & 3 to the western hemisphere, on the other hand…

Listen, Mother is finished. He said so himself. It was a very good series while it lasted, but evn for me, 3 is enough. I would love if they made a fourth, but he has given us something that many other developers never even attempt–closure. He straight told us there would be no more. Now we don’t have to wonder. Chaisu productions is making a mother 4 with all new characters and settings (and obviously, plot). I won’t spoil any big things but the two main characters are a young boy named Chase an his hardworking older brother named Zack. They haven’t finished, but on their website (sorry, I don’t have a link)you can see their progress and fan stuff. they will announce when it comes out when they’re near finished. If any info is wrong,(highly doubt it), then sorry.

I would really love another Mother. But the Mother 3 didn’t give a clue for next mother and it really didn’t have a villain that ended didn’t end up dying (except for Pokey but he’s trapped forever so he doesn’t count). So There might not be another one.

Frankly, the ending of Mother 3 was such that it would be pretty hard to make a direct sequel. If there was a M4, then it would be a prequel.

Frankly, I think that no sequel is sometimes better. Every story must end somewhere. There’s nothing worse than a story which doesn’t get a proper ending because everyone were unwilling to give it one.

A personal story. I’ve once partaken in a collaborative comic drawing project on a forum. Each person made a comic page, then another person made another one, etc. We had great fun, and told a story about heroes uniting to fight a villain. After many, many posts everything seemed wrapped up. The bad guy has been defeated by the heroes’ sly plan, all other problems have been dealt with…

…And then some oaf of a forumgoer decided “No, I want it to go on!” and introduced some cool new villain who was so much stronger than everyone else and unleashed his own wave of tyranny. Obviously the author hoped that this new villain would lengthen the story for another epic amount of posts, but instead everyone got all bored and left the project and the comic never got a proper ending. 🙁

I agree with JudgeDeadd, sometimes series are better off without a sequel. Of course, the sequels for Mother 1 were all awesome. 😛

But, whatever. Itoi might change his mind sometime in the future, or maybe he might make an entirely new series altogether. 😛 Who knows?

I like trilogies. I’ve seen through history trilogies get ruined if you make another story. so I’m glad he cuts it at 3. but I’d love to play what ever fan made mother 4, just to see how good a fan made game could be. and even if it turns out horrible it won’t effect my view on the trilogy because it’s a fan made game.

like those fan made star wars movies. they were not up to par… but not so horrible to ruin the trilogy. but I could no longer say I loved star wars after I saw episode one. (I still refuse to watch episode 2 and 3) if only I could go back in time and stop myself from watching episode one. I’d still be able to enjoy the trilogy I used to love.

@Mato: THANK YOU. I wish there was a way to filter out all the immature children who just whine and gripe about EB. Like I’ve said elsewhere, we are relatively lucky to have a series with such a strong following, especially in Japan. Even if the games are through, I bet they’ll be releasing compilations and additional merchandise for many, many years to come, which is much more than you can say about some video games series.

So kids: stop whining, be thankful for what MOTHER/EarthBound stuff is around, and please, use a spelling/grammar checker or an adult when posting to the Internet. Sheesh…

Earthbound became my drug.
Since the very very beginning of the game, when I played it, I felt under its charm.
Now that I learned that there will not be another Mother, I feel very sad. There’s no game like Earthbound. It’s Unique.
Hell, I feel so sad. I don’t want to lose hope, but I think that there’s no hope, awfully.

Well it might come out but from this point, but Itoi will probably work on something different or just quit the project altogether.

I think people need to simply face the fact that the story which began with Mother ended with Mother 3. There is no sequel required, because the story is over. If Mother 3 would have never been done, then I would have been disappointed, but it did come out, and it was a great ending to the series.

I sort of do agree that Mother 3 was a great ending to the series. Just the whole story and the so sad yet beautiful ending. It’d be nice to see a fanmade Mother 4 but Mother 3 was truly a perfect ending to the trilogy. Although I wonder how the game might’ve been if Itoi used the more “darker ending”…

MOTHER 3 is is great game, but if Itoi stops, the series stops. And you all know that. So, if anyone makes a MOTHER 4, you should have the main character be Lucas. but the said fan game doesn’t look too bad, and if itoi has stated he is open to others making it under the name of Mother 4, then this may be worth looking at… assuming this is as good as it seems.

Well, he says no Mother 4 but that doesn’t mean EarthBound 0, EarthBound and EarthBound 2 can’t be remade onto the Nintendo 3DS in 1 cartridge, that is the best thing that could happen to the series right now. I really don’t think they are going to make a Mother 4 official.

Huh….why does Itoi have to torture us? Us Mother fans have been rejected and denied by Nintendo and now Itoi says there won’t be another Mother game 🙁

I hope someone else at Nintendo makes a Mother 4, or at least release Mother 3 in America (perhaps redesign it in 3D for the 3DS 🙂

Also perhaps Mother 4 could involve some sort of time travel to enable Lucas, Ness, and Ninten to all be in it…just saying, since very few people (myself included) have played Mother 1 and a lot of people haven’t got a chance to play EarthBound or Mother 3…it’s a pipe dream, but I’m still hoping 🙂

If I were Itoi, I would want to settle down and retire, too. I do think he has it in him to tie up the loose ends in one last game. And this time, give it to America!

Itoi’s mind may have changed by now, so don’t give up hope everyone! If Itoi sees how many people want a Mother 4 he might change his mind! But how can we show Itoi how much so many people want a Mother 4?

Well, I’m pretty sure there could be a Mother 4. Obviusly a prequel. Remember, at the end of Earthbound, Porky said “that’s its a good bet that they will see each other again” to Ness. So, it’s possible that in Mother 4 you play as Ness again. Also, in Mother 3, Leder says that Porky “was kicked out of every other time and dimension”, meaning that he went to other dimensions and times, and other heroes stoped his desires of domination.
However, I’m sure that, if there’s a Mother 4, Itoi won’t be behind of it.

Itoi said like less than 2 months ago that he will NEVER make a Mother 4 himself, but that anything can be considered Mother 4, including our lives…

I thought the series ended off at a good note. I think Itoi is smart for ending it here. It’s like what Batman said in The Dark Knight. “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” Sonic lived too long and became a villain. MOTHER deserves to die a noble death. Oh, and after the credits and everything in MOTHER 3, there was a final, ‘END’ with no question mark. No evil is to be fought, obviously.

Am I the only one glad the series stoped, well we actually should have a Mother 4, but not like a million Mother games. Mother3 had a great ending, I think the series is picture perfect. And personally, when there are many Prequals to RPG’s they get borring. though Mother will NEVER get boring but let’s look at Pokemon, When the first games came out (Red, Blue, and Yellow) Everyone was all “Oh I want to buy it now!!!” And it did pretty well. Than Pokemon Silver and Gold came out and it was still big and popular. But then when Pokemon Emerald, Ruby, and Saphire came out every one said. “Wow another one, looks okay I guess, I’ll buy it.” Than Pokemon Diamond and Pearl came out and everyone was going “eh, I’m glad they made another but, this isn’t really Pokemon anymore,” then Pokemon Black and White came out and lost all of the big huge Pokemon fanatics, but also gained new ones. Now all of the fans are saying that Pokemon B&W are terrible and want Pokemon Red to come back. Now I’m not saying that I don’t want a Mother 4 but if it does, there will most likely be a Mother 5 and than you see, Mother will become like Pokemon 🙁

I thought it would be impossible to top Earthbound, but when I finished Mother 3 I had no idea which game I loved more and I still don’t. Itoi’s gift to this world has been the Mother series, and I hope one day he will find it necessary to realize a Mother 4. If he doesn’t, what we’ve been left with is still more than I could ever have imagined.

ANd why is everyone saying they hate Itoi now! He INVENTED the amazing series. Hey. How about letting the man retire or something? And by that, I mean let it go! Itoi is a genius and he needs to rest the beautiful brain.
What we CAN do is see if someone else can be selected as a successful heir to this guy. Maybe we’ll start to see some new assets ‘n such. By that I mean, a new generation, new ideas? Just ask Itoi what makes the series its own, keep the basics, and then go outta control with some new additions.

I enjoy some of the comments blaming Itoi for Mother3 not being released in the USA, it just goes to show that people don’t research anything, that is Nintendo’s doing.
The reason at the end of Mother 3 it says END? Is because you as the player are to determine what happened, if they lived do they go on living? Are they dead and in the afterlife? You decide, that’s the part of the fun with using your imagination.
There wont be a Mother 4, and to be honest I am glad for that, the magic and feeling the first 3 games had is there and will always be there so we should be thankful for what we had and appreciate it. When you keep trying to make a series and stretch it out forever you have stale and unoriginal idea and it progressively gets worse. I for one am thankful to Itoi, and glad he gave us.

One thing’s funny is that a few people enjoyed the first three games and are now hating on Itoi for not making a fourth. Without him, there would be no Mother/Earthbound, without him, there wouldn’t be this site. Give the man a break. He created some of the greatest games of all time. Be grateful he still put up with Mother 3 after it was cancelled originally. Itoi is a genius for making this series. If you’re a true Mother fan you won’t be hating on him for not making a fourth, but thanking him for making a great, enjoyable series of games. If you really need a fourth so much, check out the fan game, mentioned by others. The project itself has came a long way and is going on great. If you hate Itoi but not Earthbound then you should basically hate both. Please respect the man, and control your childish need of hatred. That’s all I have to say. The Mother 4 Fangame project by Zephys, Pik, and others has impressed me. They did the smart thing and came up with the original Travis, rather than (this is gonna be fun) some cheap fan-fiction crap where Porky and Giygas merge, kidnap Boney, brings Ninten, Ness, and Lucas into the same era, and Ness goes gay with Tony, and Lucas makes out with Paula, much to the jealousy of the resurrected Masked Man, who injects Dr. Andonuts with a serum which makes him go rogue and slaughters all the Tendas, whose bodies are used by Pigmasks to be fused with the moving lamps from the beginning of EB0 to travel with the Phase Distorter to find the souls of the Magypsies and convert them into environmentally friendly fuel for evil trucks and taxi cabs. I’m just going to say this. While, like all of you who are upset about the lack of an english release of the GBA games (I do mean Mother 1 + 2 as that would have brought younger fans interested in probably buying Mother 3) and also the high curiosity of what Mother 3 64 would have looked like (I’m probably thinking of learning 3DS Max and similar programs to try and create some Mother 3 enemies and heroes in 3D because I personally find it interesting to see a Mother/Earthbound game in 3D) I’m glad Itoi’s not working on it anymore. I mean, he’s probably had to go through so much to push the third game out there. But just because he’s not making it doesn’t mean I’ll lose all hope. I mean, the Mother 4 fan game looks beautiful and to be honest it shows what gamers and fans can do if they take their imagination and talent to the limit. I mean, the people who are developing these games seem to know their stuff because when I listen to the music it has the same charm as the actual series itself and as for the setting and story, Mother 1/2 and 3 all had a different kind of story from each other because Mother 2 took elements from Mother 1 but had a bunch of changes made to it. Mother 3 was a totally different story while keeping some references to the first two, heck Porky (Pokey) is the main villain having the influence of Gygas and being a spoiled little brat. So, I’m sure the feeling and story will be completely new, but hopefully some references will be made.

I honestly think that Itoi is done with the Moter series. 🙁 Its sucks to say it. I am quite interested in the fan made mother 4 thats going on. It looks pretty good for a fan-made game and I MIGHT give it a try. I can imagine why he thinks that another mother game is difficult to imagine. I can’t even guess whats gonna be in that fan game!

I realy think their NEEDS to be Mother 1+2+3 on 3DS. The cartridge would have all 3 games, but also include extras, such as a sound mode to listen to your favorite tracks in the game, a demo of Earthbound 64 from Spaceworld, a 3D version of the official Earthbound strategy guide and ads for the games, something that lets you look at clay models for the 3 games, in 3D. The bottom screen would have nothing on it, pretty much, since it’s useless for Mother. It could be packaged with a few AR cards, so you can take a picture of Mr. Saturn on your desk. There could be a special edition too, which includes a Mr. Saturn plush and a franklin badge. To promote the game, Nintendo should make a Mother themed 3DS and a Mother themed 3DSXL, and posters! The marketing campaign should be “for kids, grown-ups, and young women!” and not “this game stinks” and “it’s like living in your gym shoes.” The game would probably be rated T or E10+ for mild language, suggestive themes, and cartoon violence. Somebody pitch the idea Nintendo and start a petition or something!!!

@ 0m4r the bottom screen could have the Hp/PP boxes. Plus because it looks like a kiddie game they would problably dumb it down to at least E 10+. If that all fits on the cart that would be cool. The only thing is petitions don’t work… we should all just threat to stop buying nintendo games until they release the games then sales will dip and they will have no choice but to A. I think the reason new EB fans react so badly to the news about no EarthBound on VC is because most of them have never played it and the Virtual Console was their only hope. Honestly, if I were them, I’d just resort to emulation, unless they can afford the required SBES and game cartridge. they’d have to resort to emulation to play Mother 1/Earth Bound and Mother 3/EarthBound 2 anyway, so why not do it for Mother 2/EarthBound?

What about that fan made Mother 4? I remember but I lost the link. Just a VC release is suficient to everybody, Wii, WiiU, 3DS, I just need to play it! I can just say that 0m4r just read my mind.

Well… Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Kirby all received some attention at milestone anniversaries recently. Maybe a compilation like that for the 3DS or WiiU is possible… It depends on Itoi, though. Given his popularity and relationship with Iwata, I think his opinion/desire for anything Mother related carries a lot of weight.

It’s OK that a mother 4 won’t be made. It’s not sad but a happy thing. It makes the other 3 games all the more special. what would be esciting though would be a direct sequel of mother 2. call it mother 2 +2. or 2.5. heck call it mother 4, just put ness, paula, jeff, and poo in it. i cared about those characters most of all, and im sure im not the only one. it would be nice to see them again in a familiar setting, just in a different time. the “realism” and “cuteness” of mother 2 was believable, and enjoyable, because it was so close to home for many of us humble, sub-urban americans. if someone can make that happen again, the GO ahead and make it.

Alright, who said the main character’s name should be Sid? I came up with that around the time you posted that comment! I named him Sid because it’s DSi mixed up like Ness is SNES with the first S moved to the back.

Most of us are not mad because the series is ended. It is just that the only game we can possibly play is mother 2, which is the only game that is translated in English. Not to mention it is expensive. I know that it is being released on WII U, but not everyone can afford that either.
Now that we know for sure there will be no more mother games we are disappointed that we will probably never play one. As I said mother 1 and 3 are in Japanese. This is why most of us are upset with this decision.

Here’s my opinion, just an opinion.
It’s kinda like Harry Potter – it’s not over until the fans die out. We can take over. Itoi worked so hard for all of us, so maybe we should pick up where he’s leaving off. Especially because if he wants to be the player, he can have a chance.
I say we pick up, and maybe even make the series better known now. Fangames, art, all kinds of it…
It’s an obscure series, but it’s loved by the fans, right? I know I love it, at least. And I’m going to make fanart that hopefully isn’t horrible!
