About five years ago, a Japanese Nintendo fan named Pikosaru made EarthBound-style sprites out of many Nintendo characters and recreated EarthBound’s cast roll scene with them. Pikosaru has since updated the project with many new characters from many new games, both new and old. Check out the latest version: You can also visit Pikosaru’s website here, where you can scroll them all the...Read More »
I got a message on Twitter from an EarthBound fan named Adam the other day: @ClydeMandelin I posted a link to the Mother 3 translation page on Miiverse, and got a warning that it was related to "criminal activity". — Adam L. Welsh (@AwelCruiz) April 10, 2015 And he then sent some photos of the messages and warnings involved: Apparently this isn’t just a MOTHER 3-only thi...Read More »
A couple fans have recently let me know that EarthBound has sold out on the Club Nintendo system. Here’s some info from J64: EarthBound was offered as one of the final Club Nintendo rewards with a price of 250 coins. Recently, it seems as though they ran out of stock. I guess they pre-allocate a certain number of download codes for each game, because I can think of no other way for a digit...Read More »
The newest rewards for Club Nintendo were recently announced, and this time they’re digital-only goodies. And Nintendo has made EarthBound one of those rewards! I’ve never really participated in the Club Nintendo stuff so I don’t know much about the difference between Gold and Platinum levels and all that. All I know is that a lot of fans seem upset that the rewards are digital-...Read More »
During the EarthBound Bash, Marcus Lindblom mentioned to me that he had wanted to write a book about his experiences working on EarthBound’s localization back in the day, but that Nintendo basically said no and killed the idea. Well, Polygon has a new article that goes into a little more depth on the subject, check it out here. One of these days/years I finally hope to release a book versio...Read More »
Yesterday, Nintendo posted the following New Year’s greeting on its social media accounts: I got lots of e-mails from EarthBound fans about #2 in particular 😛 I’m not sure what I’d put for #1. Maybe I’ll finally play all the way through a Pokemon game. ...Read More »
Lots of fans messaged me and e-mailed me yesterday about Nintendo’s latest online survey – one of the questions is about your favorite boss character, and Giygas is on there: It’s kind of neat because lots of other, more well-known bosses could’ve been included instead. In any case, if you wanna vote Giygas in for president or whatever, check out the survey here! Thanks to...Read More »
This is old news by now, but ShirowWolf sent me this e-mail back around the time the EarthBound Bash was happening so I didn’t get to it until now: Hi, Tomato- So here we have Reggie Fils-Aime basically admitting that Nintendo of America doesn’t listen to fan petitions and campaigns, and they ‘don’t effect what [Nintendo]’ does. Now, this isn’t surprising at all...Read More »
The other day, Nintendo asked EarthBound fans to stop by at SDCC and record their thoughts about EarthBound and its recent re-release. The resulting video was posted yesterday here: I have to say, it’s been pretty cool how much attention Nintendo has given a Virtual Console game, much more than I expected! I hope it’s doing well enough that the execs don’t say, “Well, that...Read More »
Yesterday, a press release from Nintendo announced some corporate reshuffling due to various people retiring. One result of this is that Satoru Iwata has been named the new CEO of Nintendo of America. This, by itself, isn’t really an EarthBound-related news tidbit, but it’s also really cool to think that the main programmer of EarthBound is now in charge of NOA 😯 I guess another com...Read More »
