The crazy idea I had for years is finally real: I wrote a book about EarthBound’s localization, and it released yesterday! If you’ve visited my old MOTHER 2/EarthBound comparison site in the past, you know a lot of work into it. Even so, I threw almost everything out and started from scratch this time, researching new topics, discovering new things, and interviewing key people. The re...Read More »
For the last two years, Hobonichi has released MOTHER-themed planner covers and related merchandise, including an Onett cover and a Saturn Valley cover. It looks like another set is planned for 2017, based on this teaser announcement. The announcement includes three small, cropped images: Show » So it seems like there’ll be at least a Winters cover and a Magicant cover. Of course...Read More »
Fangamer’s EarthBound Kickstarter is set to end in a few days! If you haven’t checked it out yet, some really cool, unprecedented stuff is happening! The next stretch goal is actually something very near and dear to me: A book version of my EarthBound localization comparison! (temporary image, final book will look different!) Believe it or not, I first started comparing EarthBound and...Read More »
Marcus Lindblom has updated his project’s site with some more EarthBound memories and inside information! First up, he discusses a lot of the changes in the game, including the reasoning behind the bar-to-cafe change, the creation of the English Mr. Saturn font, those weird little extra lights on Dr. Andonuts’ lab, and more! Read his comments on these topics here! More recently, Marc...Read More »
Every month I update the average price of EarthBound stuff on buyearthbound.com to help fans get the best possible deal and avoid paying too much. Although I didn’t update last month because I’m a big dummyhead. It’s been a while since EarthBound was released on the Wii U, so I suspected that physical copies would’ve gone down further in price. And yep, it pretty much did! ...Read More »
A recent question I got on my EarthBound Legends of Localization site was: According to The Cutting Room Floor, there’s two unused items: Video Relaxant (“What the hey is this?”) and Temporary Goods (“A key given to you by a maid who works at the Monotoli building.”), neither of which do anything. The former is listed on your Items page, but not the latter. I’m curious as to what the J...Read More »
Marcus Lindblom, the localization director behind EarthBound, has been actively in touch with a lot of folks in the EarthBound community, which is really cool – even I’ve chatted a few times with him online! After the re-release of EarthBound on the Wii U last week, Wired recently published an interview with Marcus in which he discusses the process of localization, some of the choices ...Read More »
Many EB Central regulars know that I relatively recently started a new site called Legends of Localization in which I dig deeply into the localization and translation differences between various video games. For years I’ve had my EarthBound/MOTHER 2 comparison here on EarthBound Central, but now it makes more sense for me to put it over on LoL (don’t laugh!). It took a while, but now ...Read More »
Earlier today I remembered that when MOTHER 2 was ported to the Game Boy Advance, Itoi didn’t make many changes to the text at all. For instance, he made the decision to leave date references alone, like 199X and having to return the library map by 2001. That said, there WERE some slight text changes though, and one of them has to do with a baked goods seller in Burglin Park. Here’s ho...Read More »
For a while now a fan by the name of Hagen has been working on a hack of EarthBound to undo a lot of the changes in the localization, much of which is based on my comparison of the Japanese and North American versions here. Anyway, Hagen asked me yesterday about something that might be interesting to share. At the end of the game, the Stoic Club is replaced by a different type of establishment. In...Read More »
- DJ: From what I’ve gathered I’m pretty sure he still writes copy, so they’re an ad company.
- cosmodos: What does his company even do? Is it actually lucrative? From what I can gather (not knowing Japanese), it’s just his blog, and he...
- Jason: http://www.ipokiso.com/company /2017/hobonichi.html The anticipated price per share is 2,300 yen. As for those wishing to purchase a share...
- Leeaux: Hey I just saw this! Really interesting watch to. Lots of little fun facts.
- Mary: The “behind the scenes” video on how the Ness animation was made is great too. The animators channel is A + Start.
