Last night was Monday, which meant a new edition of EarthBound Central Live! We did a lot last night, we talked about recent EarthBound news -including Satoru Iwata’s passing, we shared e-mails and submissions from EarthBound Central viewers, and we played more of my new creation: Twitch vs. EarthBound! We also held a Q&A session during Twitch vs. EarthBound, but there were so many que...Read More »
Satoru Iwata passed away recently at the age of 55. Not only was he the president of Nintendo, but he also saved MOTHER 2/EarthBound from cancellation by reprogramming most of the game, he was in charge of the Nintendo 64 version of MOTHER 3, and he was also there when the decision was made to make MOTHER 3 a Game Boy Advance game. Mr. Iwata played a big role in it all. This series, this site, our...Read More »
Back in 2000 (holy crap it’s already 13 years later), when the Nintendo 64 version of MOTHER 3 – aka EarthBound 64 – was cancelled, Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Shigesato Itoi sat down and talked all about the cancellation. It was then posted online over the course of like 15 pages. There was so much text that nobody ever really fully translated the discussion… unti...Read More »
Yesterday, a press release from Nintendo announced some corporate reshuffling due to various people retiring. One result of this is that Satoru Iwata has been named the new CEO of Nintendo of America. This, by itself, isn’t really an EarthBound-related news tidbit, but it’s also really cool to think that the main programmer of EarthBound is now in charge of NOA 😯 I guess another com...Read More »
Last week a three-part MOTHER 2-related discussion between Shigesato Itoi and Satoru Iwata was posted on Shigesato Itoi’s website. If you can read Japanese, check it out here. If you don’t read Japanese, fear not, for KameDaniRyuu has translated them for English-speakers! Part 1: The Beginnings of MOTHER 2 Part 2: Memories of Many Different Places Part 3: The Quiet Creator of Special...Read More »
Earlier today, Satoru Iwata posted a tweet about another piece of MOTHER 2 merchandise he has – one of the super-rare MOTHER 2 jackets! Here’s a translation of what he says: Hello, this is Iwata of Nintendo. Continuing with yesterday, here’s another piece of MOTHER 2 merchandise. This is a special sukajan jacket given to the staff. The logo is faithfully recreated in embroidery ...Read More »
In a recent Tweet, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said: Hello, this is Iwata of Nintendo. A Wii U Virtual Console version of MOTHER 2 will be released on the 20th. It’s a game I personally worked on as a programmer and is full of memories. I found something at my house that really takes me back, so I’m posting a photo of it here. The photo is of a boxed copy of MOTHER 2 that basicall...Read More »
MOTHER 2 is set to be released on the Japanese Wii U Virtual Console in about 24 hours from the time of this post. In preparation, Shigesato Itoi has posted a video and began posting an interview between him and Satoru Iwata. First is the video! Here’s a rushed translation of what he’s saying: Thank you for all for visiting Hobonichi. MOTHER 2 has finally been revived. People were alw...Read More »
A few weeks ago Nintendo announced that MOTHER 2 would get released on the Wii U Virtual Console in March. I finally went and subtitled the part of the announcement video, so here it is! There’s nothing particularly new or special in there, but I felt it was worth translating and sharing for everyone anyway. (On a completely separate note, I tried everything in the world to get VirtualDub t...Read More »
In a recent Kotaku interview, Satoru Iwata is asked about MOTHER 3 and mentions how he and Itoi are aware of the big Western fanbase for the series. Check it out here: Nintendo Chief: Mario Is Part Of Gamers’ DNA Still no real response on the subject though. But it’s at least clear that Reggie, Iwata, and Itoi are all very aware of the fanbase outside of Japan. ...Read More »

- Mary: The “behind the scenes” video on how the Ness animation was made is great too. The animators channel is A + Start.
