I used to subscribe to nintendo power in the 80s and 90s. They had a one paragraph write up about it in the upcoming games section of one issue, but it said that earthbound was being released on the NES, not the SNES. the game wasn't released until like a year later, so I'm guessing it was originally slated for NES release, but they decided to put it on what was then the new platform, the SNES. as soon as it came out, I bought it.

They talked about the photographer saying "fuzzy pickles," and how you beat enemies with bats instead of the usual magical crap.... Besides Super Mario RPG, I was never an RPG fan, but I thought this game I had never heard of sounded HILARIOUS! I still have my SNES that I got when I was young (my mom bought it on the day it came out, no less), but at the time I didn't have a job, so I downloaded an emulator and a ROM I got as far as the part where you first arrive in Threed before realizing I HAD to get an actual cartridge Got a job a few weeks later, found a copy at a local game store for $89.99, dusted off the 'ol SNES, and played through the game a couple times so far.... Still lovin' it! I love rpgs. but what I realloy liked about this games is what you said - not that it's hilarious, but it's different. Instead of masamunes and gunswords, you use stun guns and baseball bats. instead of medieval villages and towns, you are in the big city. It was a modern day based rpg, and at the time, that had never been done before.

I forgot about it when it wasn't released, but later when NP started having articles about EarthBound, I was absolutely enthralled. I harassed my poor mother into driving me to the "local" game shop (~25 miles away) so I could get it on the first day. Sure, it was $70 of my hard-earned paper route money, but that (and Final Fantasy III) was perhaps the best $70 I ever spent. LOL, nice. another fan brought in by the old nintendo power. I actually had every issue from 89 - 96, but threw them all away about 6 months ago.

I thought most of us got introduced to earthbound from the great snes game. or even some of us from the NES game before it. I've always thought that a lesser % of earthbound fans were people who found it through ssb. and... . ... am I wrong. did most people get introduced to this game through ssb? it would be nice to know... I've always just assumed that most of us were old time fans. but then i realize not everyone here is in their 20's to 30's (I'm 28) and some of you are even in your early teens (maybe even younger) is it possible that a higher % of the fans are newcomers, who never got the joy of playing the game on the actual snes? that makes me sad to think about. it saddens me even more now, that this game is not out for virtual console. all the fans being forced to use emulation for all 3 games. that's pathetic. *almost cry's thinking about how unfair it must be for all the new younger fans* before now, I've only been able to think about is how unfair it is to me (and old time fans like me). but now that i see it from a different point of view. maybe I should buy a few more post cards. and ask my friends to send them to japan. I mean... who knows ... if it will help.... we gotta try something. something that will make earthbound available for all fans of all ages. so we aren't forced into illegal piracy. for old fans as well as new fans, we all deserve earthbound, the entire world deserves earthbound. I'm now very interested in everyones responses to this thread. wow after reading what you wrote mr saturn, right after hearing what Murcielo said, my heart is touched deeply. and now I have a very broken heart (broken by Nintendo). thanks for opening my eyes mr.saturn. fans who knew about it on SNES are likely the minority, at least on the online world, where the younger generation tends to be the majority. You gotta remember that many of them weren't around when the game came out, so most of them have probably never owned an snes unless they bought it used online or at a games store. Mother was never a popular nes game, in fact, I think it was only originally set for release on the japanese famicom system, so many people had never heard of mother. Earthbound ws the groundbreaking game in the US.

Around the time I actually started to care about games on the kind of level I care about EarthBound, I had a Nintendo 64. Because I was better at games, I was able to do more than just die over and over again. This caused me to do something I had rarely done before: BEAT (gasp!) A GAME!
You may hiss, you may jeer, but it wasn't until this year that I conquered Hades Ears...
Ahem, what I mean to say is that I was around 10 years old when I got serious enough to actually play through a game to completion. My first was Mario 64. Then, super smash bros. (only after I SMASHed my friend Zack's virtual face in, though. Took a bit). Then, there was Rogue Squadron. And, then of course, the Zelda games. So, after all that, I started to dig deeper. Instead of just glossing over parts, I paid attention. I looked.
More importantly, I tried things again, but differently. Things like using Ness to beat master hand instead of Kirby...
That's when I discovered the secret. The well hidden secret that is EarthBound...
My, what an adventure it has been...
