I've always wanted to play Earthbound, but the english version is way out of my budget, so I'd be forced to use "alternative" methods to play it. The Japanes version, however, is much more affordable. Not only is the Japanese cart cheaper than the American cart, but since Nintendo included Mother 2 as a Masterpiece in the japanese version of Brawl, there's a Mother 2 rom on every copy of that game.

So my question is this: Would it be possible/feasible for someone to create an English patch for Mother 2.

Yes, it would be possible, but there's not much of a point; just download a rom of the English version.

If you're REALLY intent on using a translated SFC rom, I think there's a super easy way to do it using PK Hack's Reset function, but I'm not quite sure that would work.

The reason I want to see about a translation is that, as I said, the Mother 2 rom is included in every copy of DSBX and extracting it isn't that hard. Since DSBX is still being sold, it's easier to get ahold of than a copy(japanese or english) of the original, and extracting the rom is legal(unlike downloading a rom).

Edit: DSBX being Dairantou Smash Brothers X. Also tried doing what you said, no effect. It seems I would need to download an Earthbound rom for that to work. Is there some version of PK Hack i should download?

Also: the rom you get from dumping M2 via DSBX fails the game's checksum, so it's probably different somehow from common dumps.

To use the PK Hack method, you'd need an Earthbound rom anyway, but since I'm a nice guy, I'll make a patch and see if that works for SFC Mother 2.

I'm not sure. Maybe if you search around Mato's Mother 2 vs. Earthbound section, you could find some information regarding that.

Works like a charm, except it has a bad checksum. Would creating a new checksum trigger the anti-piracy measures?

I wouldn't mess with the checksum; as long as the game works, you probably shouldn't mess with it. Like they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
