Post subject: Should the MOTHER series have an "operation"? Posted: Sat Aug 13, 2011 8:09 am |

Not sure if this had already been suggested, but here it goes. As you may or may not know, there are online petitions, for the release of certain video games, dubbed as "Operation Rainfall" and "Operation Moonfall". "Rainfall" focuses on the American release of Xenoblade Chronicles, Pandora's Tower, and The Last Story. "Moonfall" focuses on a 3DS remake of Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. What I'm here to ask is to have a petition for the MOTHER series. If it's for the 3DS ambassador program's GBA games or just bringing them back as a game remade for one of Nintendo's systems, I'm wondering if anyone did or plans to make a petition for this series. Tell me what you guys think on this...
P.S. don't ignore this because it took forever to do with a 3DS!

The main reason I suggested to try again is because Operation Moonfall had been seen by Nintendo and they considered it. Though Rainfall isn't as lucky, the petition group still trying and plan to buy Final Fantasy on the Wii's Virtual Consle on the day those 3 other RPG's gets released in Europe. Rainfall is still trying plus they persistent to the point it it floods the comments for Nintendo's Facebook page. After seeing this, I always thought the MOTHER series should try again.

It WOULD be awesome if they actually agreed to do it. They could use Mato's translations for Mother 1 and Mother 3 and translate Mother 2 properly (like they did with the Final Fantasy Advances, except they probably would still clothe Ness in Magicant, which I personally don't have a problem with. I prefer him being clothed, TBH), if Mato was okay with it. That way, we needn't resort to playing the games illegally to actually play them in English.

Zelda is a cash cow for Nintendo, so releasing Majora's Mask on 3DS is a no-brainer for them. They were probably planning on doing it anyway, even before Op Moonfall was formed. MOTHER and the other JRPGs that Op Rainfall is trying to bring to the US, on the other hand, haven't been as successful (profit-wise) as the Zelda or Mario series. Nintendo of America's been playing it safe in recent years, mainly releasing what they know will sell and sell big. And they took a major hit this year from lower-than-anticipated initial 3DS sales, so I really don't think they'll want to support what they see as niche games that definitely won't sell as much as Zelda or Mario. That's not to say that you shouldn't politely request the games from Nintendo if you'd like to email them or something. You'll only get a form response, though. Sorry, but we've been down this disheartening road too many times

^You're right. It's pure profit, isn't it? The copyright issues in the games can't be THAT impossible to surmount. It would make a lot more sense for them to release it nowadays, when they don't have to worry about cartridge costs due to an e-shop.
Now, Nintendo did say that they're making a new Smash bro's game. If I was a director at Nintendo, I would probably wait until then to release the Mother series anywhere. Then I could announce a release sometime right before or immediately after the game comes out. That way, when the spike of people wondering "who exactly are Ness and Lucas again" come through, they'll hear that the games are being rereleased, and they'll buy them. Plus, the time it'll take to actually MAKE the new Smash Bros game will give Nintendo enough time to (hopefully) work through the copyright problems.
At least, that's my closest guess. So, yeah, an Operation right now might not be a great idea. If we wait for the new Smash Bros, we might actually have a chance, though. But that's at least a few years down the road.

I don't know if it would work or not, but if we do try it I think it should be around the time the next smash bros game is released. Ness and Lucas will be in the minds of smash bros fans and people will be aware of who they are. So every operation tried has failed so far I'd like to see a rerelease of the series in any way. I know nintendo wants to play it safe too, I know the EarthBound/Mother series definitely won't sell as well as Mario or Zelda but if they localize the games right than they could make a profit off of them. Other Jrpgs have done well, the final fantasy series does well for itself, and dragon quest IX was a top selling game for a few weeks after it was released in america.
