A fellow named RandomAnon sent me an interesting e-mail recently – probably the earliest-known English review or mention of MOTHER 1 has been unearthed! So, this might not be worthy of being featured on EBC, but I thought it was really cool nonetheless. So there was a thread on 4chan’s retro games board about old-video game related Usenet (now Google Groups) posts and one anon found th...Read More »
EarthBound Beginnings was released a few days ago on Wii Us outside of Japan, and it appears to be the exact same as the NES ROM that leaked years and years ago, with no known changes. The Japanese version was also released on Japanese Wii Us… but it HAS had some changes. There isn’t a full list of what changes exist in the Japanese version so far, but they seem to be in line with some...Read More »
A few weeks ago, JWitzz posted a video showcasing similarities between EarthBound/MOTHER games and Pokemon: There’s info in there about “NINTEN” being a hidden default name in a Pokemon game – if true, that’s news to me, especially with “SONY” being the antagonist’s hidden default name too. I’m sure the NINTEN name is just a coincidence (simil...Read More »
I’ve pointed out a number of typos and such in the official release of EarthBound, such as the infamous unverse. But there was a much harder-to-find typo in the game all this time that I never knew about until recently. If you visit Milky Well with a party member who’s diamondized (and/or possibly just dead), the following message will pop up: The power of Milkey Well flowed into ____...Read More »
On YouTube, Beta64 recently posted a 20-minute video showing off a number of beta and unused elements in EarthBound / MOTHER 2: A lot of the stuff might be common knowledge if you hang around EB Central often, but maybe there’s stuff in there that’s new to you! I don’t agree with all of the assumptions and claims the video makes (butterflies as enemies, for example), but I’...Read More »
A while back, Buck Fever sent me this: So I was looking at images of Giygas from the final battle of EarthBound and I noticed that the main image of the screaming skull thing looked odd, so I rotated it 180 degrees and I noticed a similarity between the image and Giygas/Giegue’s sprite in MOTHER: My friend Dan, SgtTyrefell on twitter, went in and tinkered with the image, removing excess ...Read More »
EarthBound’s head localizer, Marcus Lindblom has begun to share some of his thoughts and experiences working on EarthBound! He has two posts up in the “updates” section of his game’s Kickstarter: A quick introduction His brush with the dangerous and partial real-life inspiration for the Happy Happyists Marcus has more articles planned for the coming days and weeks, so kee...Read More »
A few years back, OKeijiDragon started working on a documentary video series about big-name video games that wound up canceled. The first video was to be about MOTHER 3 (particularly the Nintendo 64 version)… and the 2012 work-in-progress version of the video is now available for all to see! The video is really information-dense and uses on-screen text rather than a narrator, so it’s ...Read More »
For years Jeffman and I have worked on-and-off putting together the next version of the MOTHER 3 translation patch – mostly fixing existing bugs, glitches, typos, and such. Before releasing the new version 1.2 patch, though, we need to test it out all the way through to make sure stuff hasn’t broken… and I had an almost spur-of-the-moment idea to stream it live while testing it....Read More »
A while back on Twitter, ChronoMoogle shared this scan of an old MOTHER 2 preview in an early 1993 issue of Hippon Super: And here’s a quick translation of what it says: Is Nintendo’s Eagerly-Awaited New Game Nearing a Release Date? SFC MOTHER 2: Gyiyg’s Counterattack *Nintendo *Release Date TBA *Price TBA It’s been half a year since screenshots of MOTHER 2 were released. ...Read More »
- DJ: From what I’ve gathered I’m pretty sure he still writes copy, so they’re an ad company.

- Leeaux: Hey I just saw this! Really interesting watch to. Lots of little fun facts.
- Mary: The “behind the scenes” video on how the Ness animation was made is great too. The animators channel is A + Start.
