A couple readers sent in a link to a new video about EarthBound and how its “personality” plays a big part of its game design. The video is described with: Earthbound’s greatest strength is its personality, something most modern games seem to lack. But, from a game design perspective, “personality” isn’t something often considered. How does Earthbound use its ch...Read More »

Back during the MOTHER 3 translation I did some hacking and recorded video of some unused rooms in the game. The video got deleted when my account got deleted years back, so I just now got around to putting it up again: Fans have found tons of other unused stuff since then, so this is pretty simple, bland stuff. But at the time it was really cool being able to walk around in unused areas! ...Read More »

Super translator Chewy recently translated a very big and very interesting interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Shigesato Itoi back before the Nintendo 64 Disk System was released in Japan and while it still seemed like the next big thing for Nintendo. There’s a ton of stuff they cover, including various things relating to MOTHER 3/EarthBound 64 that not even I’ve heard before, so give...Read More »

Itoi’s live MOTHER 2 stream was a few days ago, and I’ve been very slowly trying to go through the entire thing and list stuff of interest. Except it’s hard to find time, so I’ve been listening to it in the background while doing other stuff. Here’s what I’ve jotted down on my horribly-handwritten notes, but if I’ve forgotten anything, please let me know i...Read More »

Many EB Central regulars know that I relatively recently started a new site called Legends of Localization in which I dig deeply into the localization and translation differences between various video games. For years I’ve had my EarthBound/MOTHER 2 comparison here on EarthBound Central, but now it makes more sense for me to put it over on LoL (don’t laugh!). It took a while, but now ...Read More »

Earlier today I remembered that when MOTHER 2 was ported to the Game Boy Advance, Itoi didn’t make many changes to the text at all. For instance, he made the decision to leave date references alone, like 199X and having to return the library map by 2001. That said, there WERE some slight text changes though, and one of them has to do with a baked goods seller in Burglin Park. Here’s ho...Read More »

A long while ago while working on my MOTHER 2 / EarthBound comparison stuff, I found myself accidentally missing getting a screenshot in the Lost Underworld in MOTHER 2. It would take me a looooong time to get back there, so I never got the screenshot: I’ve been working on revamping and moving my EB comparison stuff, and I decided it was time to finally get that screenshot. But, again, it w...Read More »

If you missed the MOTHER 2 stream I did with Reid and the Starmen.Net/Fangamer gang earlier this week, at one point we were all discussing how we first discovered the game. Someone in the chat had a really interesting story about EarthBound and allergies, so I asked him to e-mail me the story. And here it is! I’m James Montagna from WayForward. saberlily said I should email you my story: My...Read More »

The other day during the Fangamer/Starmen.Net/EarthBound Central/Everything Else MOTHER 2 live stream event, Marcus Lindblom, one of the main brains behind EarthBound’s localization popped into the chat and really upped everyone’s excitement. He also answered a number of questions fans had and answered some mysteries as well! Here are quick excerpts of some of the highlights: One thing...Read More »

After you defeat Giygas in EarthBound, if you go back to Onett and talk to Ruffini the dog, he’ll tell you to mail your thoughts on the game to a certain real-life mailing address in the United States. In fact, one of the earliest EarthBound community projects was Project Ruffini! Anyway, in the Japanese version of the game, Ruffini (or Itako Dog as he’s known in MOTHER 2) also tells ...Read More »
