MOTHER 1+2

Ivan R. recently sent me an e-mail about the MOTHER series logo, namely the planet that’s used in the “O” n the name. I had totally forgotten about it, this is exactly the kind of thing I made EarthBound Central for! So without further ado, here’s where the MOTHER planet logo thing comes from. Here, we see the planet in the logos. These are the GBA MOTHER 1+2 versions so th...Read More »

I’m not much for doing interviews, so whenever a magazine or someone asks me for an interview I usually decline. After the MOTHER 3 translation came out, I got a lot of requests but sent most of them Reid’s way instead. I thought I did only one or two in 2008, but I just remembered I did do a very quick interview for Retroaction sometime last year when I randomly came across the page f...Read More »

A few weeks back, a really cool Japanese auction caught fans’ eyes – a bunch of rare MOTEHR 1+2 event stuff, including a copy of MOTHER 1+2 signed by Shigesato Itoi himself. After a few days of power-bidding and lame mistakes by some companies, eventually fellow fan and avid collector neonix won the auction. It arrived a week or so ago, and here are the goodies! From neonix’s pos...Read More »

LucasTizma pointed out this Japanese auction for super-rare stuff from the MOTHER 1+2 event in 2003: The auction includes a non-Value Selection copy of MOTHER 1+2 signed by Shigesato Itoi himself. Only people who attended the event were able to get one, and I assume even then they were in rather limited quantity. The auction also includes a copy of the Saturn Valley Express, a rare Mr. Saturn pa...Read More »

In the history of the MOTHER series, there’ve been several released games and a few cancelled projects. But out of those, only one game made it out of Japan: EarthBound. By now we all know the story and history of the series (if you don’t, see here), so I won’t go into that. But we can still play the “what if” game So today’s poll question is this: What if Ear...Read More »

The other day I posted a picture from the old MOTHER 1+2 event (see here), and someone remarked that they wish they had the Saturn Valley Express newspaper thing that appears in the photo. Well, we’re all in luck, because I have the official PDF version of it from way back when! Download the PDF file! I translated some of this a long time ago, but not all of it. I think the hope was that w...Read More »

Joey D. sent this in yesterday, and it is mighty awesome! I produce an online review show that tackles the hidden classics of the 16-bit era. And since EarthBound is one of my favorite games (isn’t it for us all), I knew that my episode for that would have to be rather epic. I’ve passed it around on the Starmen.Net forums and xfisjmg1 thought I should drop you a line about it. I wound ...Read More »

A good while back Antiaverage scanned the MOTHER 1+2 CD and booklet and zipped them all up. The zip includes .png files as well as Photoshop PSD files, and all together they weigh in at 40 or 50 MB. If you’re interested, you can get the file here. One neat thing about the booklet is that it lists which musician did which songs. Of course it isn’t comprehensive; the CD doesn’t co...Read More »

Today is the “Great American Smokeout”, which I guess means it’s also this guy’s birthday Incidentally, the crow had a cigarette in the Famicom version of MOTHER, but in MOTHER 1+2 it was taken away. Itoi (a notoriously heavy smoker) quit smoking around the time MOTHER 1+2 was being made. I’m guessing it’s just coincidence though, since a lot of stuff censore...Read More »

By some coincidence a couple cool and rare-ish MOTHER 1+2 merchandise is available from a couple different people. First up is a Bubble Monkey keychain on eBay. These keychains are rather rare now and I’ve seen the Bubble Monkey one in particular sell for $53 just a month or two ago. So if you’re a collector, keep your eye on this one! Next are MOTHER 1+2 screen cleaners – thes...Read More »
