As you may remember, an EarthBound Zero prototype cart was put on eBay last month and was won buy our own fellow fan Roo for $1100. Roo is also an avid researcher and video-making guy, so naturally he made a detailed video about the prototype and information about all the EB0 prototypes. It’s interesting stuff, check it out! For $1100, I would’ve hoped the prototype could also clean ...Read More »

Update: It’s been confirmed that this is the MOTHER 3 Franklin Badge and not the MOTHER 1 Franklin Badge. While the M1 badges are unbelievably rare, the M3 ones are pretty hard to come by too, especially by themselves. When MOTHER was released in Japan, a bunch of strategy guides flooded the market. Possibly as a way to stand out from the crowd, the official strategy guides had a contest you...Read More »

In MOTHER 1/EarthBound Zero, the Bread item can be eaten like any normal food to restore HP, but it can also be used to make a trail of bread crumbs. What’s neat about that is that you can warp back to the start of the trail. Obviously this is nothing new; anyone who plays the game will probably read about it at some point in the game and possibly use it once or twice after getting lost on t...Read More »

Andy sent this in not too long ago: Hey there! Now, I’m not sure if this is anything really all that earth-shattering, but I am a casual blogger under the tumblr site: http://passthemilk.tumblr.com/ For the next week or so, I’ll be creating a new post or two everyday chronicling my creating of an Earthbound Zero Pippi rug for my brother and sister-in-law’s new baby. Thing is, the...Read More »

The auction for that EarthBound Zero prototype cartridge that recently popped up on eBay has ended, and the final price was approximately $1,187.56. It sounds like good ol’ Roo was the winner this time around, meaning this is probably the first time someone active in the fan community has gotten ahold of one of these prototypes. Roo, if you remember, is the guy who made that cool EarthBoun...Read More »

I came across a Japanese site with lots of interesting stuff that I’ll post over time, including some interesting interviews. For now though, here are scans of some MOTHER 1 promotional material from the August 4-18, 1989 issue of Famicom Tsuushin. I don’t own a copy of the magazine so these are the best pics available for now. I couldn’t find this particular issue on Yahoo Aucti...Read More »

A few months ago an EarthBound Zero prototype cart showed up on eBay (info here). The auction was taken down, but now the item is back on eBay here. There are only a few known EarthBound Zero prototype carts in the wild, all of which I’ve documented here. I still need to update a few details about a few of the things on there, I keep forgetting to. Anyway, this particular cart is one of the...Read More »

In the history of the MOTHER series, there’ve been several released games and a few cancelled projects. But out of those, only one game made it out of Japan: EarthBound. By now we all know the story and history of the series (if you don’t, see here), so I won’t go into that. But we can still play the “what if” game So today’s poll question is this: What if Ear...Read More »

I think this is from an issue of EGM from many years ago. I don’t have the exact issue info, so if anyone knows that, lemme know. Anyway, this looks like it was from a feature about games that didn’t get released outside of Japan. We all know the story about EarthBound Zero by now, but here’s a tiny article about it: I guess the suggestion at the end wasn’t effective enoug...Read More »

It’s no secret that when Shigesato Itoi created the games in the MOTHER series, he used ideas inspired by all sorts of books, movies, music, and whatnot that he liked. I’ve listed a few of these inspirations before (I really should make a page that lists them all), but here’s a look at two more. The other day PK Coffee posted on the Starmen.Net forums, asking about “The Sir...Read More »
