Finding the Plot: EarthBound
Back in 2000 (holy crap it’s already 13 years later), when the Nintendo 64 version of MOTHER 3 – aka EarthBound 64 – was cancelled, Satoru Iwata, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Shigesato Itoi sat down and talked all about the cancellation. It was then posted online over the course of like 15 pages. There was so much text that nobody ever really fully translated the discussion… unti...Read More »
ChocoZuri sent me this a little while back: Hey, Mato! I have here scans from an old MOTHER 3 post-Spaceworld preview that I believe has not made it to this site. It’s not big on any new screenshots (Despite a clearer shot of Osohe Castle), but it seems to be a little more in-depth on the storyline & battle system than anything, along with some side-notes from the publishers as well. N...Read More »
Super translator Chewy recently translated a very big and very interesting interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and Shigesato Itoi back before the Nintendo 64 Disk System was released in Japan and while it still seemed like the next big thing for Nintendo. There’s a ton of stuff they cover, including various things relating to MOTHER 3/EarthBound 64 that not even I’ve heard before, so give...Read More »
A few years back, before MOTHER 3 was released, I updated the EarthBound 64 section of Starmen.Net with everything I could find, including all the videos I could find. You can see them here. Apparently there was some EarthBound 64 video stuff during a video shown at E3 in 1998. It’s only like four seconds long, but I’d never seen it before so I thought I’d share it! In it, we se...Read More »
A Swedish EarthBound fan by the name of Anders recently sent me a big ol’ PDF file containing scans of magazines that covered EarthBound and EarthBound-related stuff. Here’s what Anders says: The first two pages contain a (US import) review of Earthbound from the magazine Super POWER, #11 1995. [...] A two-reviewer system was used and, as can be seen in the two boxes left of the final ...Read More »
The other day good ol’ pk_stan scanned in some old Famitsu magazines with interviews about EarthBound 64 in it – interviews that we’ve never actually *seen* before. I’ll post them one of these days, for now I wanted to highlight some stuff about enemies in the game. If you followed EarthBound 64′s rise and fall back in the day, then you’ve probably seen the foll...Read More »
The other day, when I was working on my newcomer’s guide to the EarthBound/Mother series and was looking for a good EarthBound 64 screenshot, I decided I’d use one of the many screenshots that Itoi posted when he announced the cancellation. I finally went with this one: Back in 2000 when EarthBound 64 was canceled, everyone on Starmen.Net was like, “OMG! Onett’s in EarthBo...Read More »
Once again the flood of Itoi interview translation continues as Chewy blasts through her NaNoTraMo stuff! This time we’re treated to an interview in the January 31, 1997 issue of Famitsu. In it, Shigesato Itoi and Satoru Iwata discuss stuff from the ill-fated Nintendo 64 version of MOTHER 3. Here’s an excerpt: Nagata Moving on, what’s the deal with the battles that Itoi’s always ra...Read More »
I know KeijiDragon’s been working on a project called “Shat-Canned Legends: MOTHER 3 / EarthBound 64″ for a long while now, but I could’ve sworn I updated about it before. I guess not, so my many apologies both to Keiji and to all the fans, since this is some quality stuff! Update: KeijiDragon has taken the video down, you can read why in the comments here. (click to view ...Read More »
We’ve seen comparisons of the N64 MOTHER 3 and the GBA MOTHER 3 before, but here’s a little video that takes a closer look, including a lot of the characters. It’s nothing new if you’re a hardcore fan, but it’s still pretty neat! If you haven’t seen many of the N64 screens and such before, I collected as many as possible a few years ago here. PoeTrader also org...Read More »
