A few years ago there were some gigantic Mr. Saturn things at certain Japanese arcades – if you don’t remember them, see here. Anyway, until today I never realized I’d never seen how one looks from behind. So here’s a pic! …I don’t remember seeing THAT on the Mr. Saturn anatomy diagram ...Read More »

May 22nd, 2013 | EarthBound, MOTHER 1+2, Videos | 18 Comments

I sometimes wondered if different versions of MOTHER 2 might play faster or slower than other versions – and then I stumbled upon this Japanese video that compares the walking speed of the GBA MOTHER 2 and the Wii U Virtual Console MOTHER 2. (GBA on top, Wii U on bottom) As you can see, the GBA version has slower walking. I don’t know if that’s because the Wii U’s Super Fam...Read More »

For years and years, maybe even as far back as the late 90s, I always wanted to make a Game Genie code that would make enemies drop items 100% of the time. I always pushed it off for another day… until yesterday, when I was like, “You know, I think I’ll come up with that code today.” It took a few hours since I didn’t know what I was doing, but in the end I got it! ...Read More »

A fan by the name of Chris sent me an e-mail about a video game-themed restaurant/bar in Canada called “EXP”. It has Triforce Burgers, Super Smash Nachos, and all sorts of other stuff. It even has “Mach Pizza Fries”: If you’re in Vancouver, check it out and let me know how it is! The website and restaurant info is here. ...Read More »

A little while back Chris Saturn sent me this about a podcast episode centered around EarthBound: So, I’m a long-time lurker in the EB community… been following this site since its inception (thanks to the links in the Mother 3 translation page), and Starmen.net for what feels like my entire adult life and some of my adolescence, but I never really gave anything back… mostly beca...Read More »

May 13th, 2013 | EarthBound, Itoi, MOTHER 1 | 11 Comments

Yesterday was Mother’s Day, and to commemorate it Shigesato Itoi tweeted something MOTHER-related: The first town in MOTHER 2 is “Onet”, but the first town in MOTHER is called, yes, “Mothersday”. It’s nothing much, but I thought I’d share it anyway. I’m more surprised at his misspellings than anything, but it’s somewhat common for Japanese crea...Read More »

Josh recently sent me this e-mail about visiting Japan: Hello, Mato! I am a long-time fan and reader of your work (over a decade now), and my friend and I will be taking a trip to Japan this summer. We are both big Earthbound fans. I know that you have some experience with Japan and Earthbound, so I was wondering if you might recommend anything Earthbound-related for us to see while we’re ...Read More »

By now it’s pretty old news that EarthBound had been rated by the ESRB back in 2007 for the Wii. What I never knew was that it had also been rated by Germany’s ratings board: To see it for yourself go here and enter “earth bound” where it says “titel”. As you can see, it, too, was classified as a Wii release. It got a rating of “6+” and received thi...Read More »
