EarthBound

February 21st, 2017 | EarthBound, Uncommon Knowledge, Videos | 2 Comments

I just recently learned that there’s a neat YouTube channel dedicated to showing off things that you can’t normally see in video games, and the most recent video is about EarthBound! Check it out here: The video covers all sorts of things using the walk through walls code, as well as some unused content and some battle stuff. I especially like how it shows how the game’s maps we...Read More »

A reader named Ed sent me some scans of MOTHER series articles from a Korean gaming magazine called “Game Champ”. I don’t speak or read Korean, but it’s still cool to see all of this. It looks like they even gave MOTHER 2 a pretty good review score! #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align...Read More »

The crazy idea I had for years is finally real: I wrote a book about EarthBound’s localization, and it released yesterday! If you’ve visited my old MOTHER 2/EarthBound comparison site in the past, you know a lot of work into it. Even so, I threw almost everything out and started from scratch this time, researching new topics, discovering new things, and interviewing key people. The re...Read More »

I’ve been going through lots of old game magazines lately for my Legends of Localization work, and there’s a lot of old MOTHER 2 info in there. I cover a lot of it in my EarthBound book but here’s something that I found in a magazine I got last week: (Click for larger pic) This was from April 1994, about four months before MOTHER 2 was on store shelves. Almost every screenshot h...Read More »

Back in January, a fan named Ellie transcribed EarthBound Beginnings’ full soundtrack (see here). Ellie’s been working hard since then, though, and has done a transcription of EarthBound’s soundtrack too, which is no easy feat – it’s nearly 200 pieces of music! Here’s a list of the transcribed music: You can download the sheet music PDF and other related files ...Read More »

Quite a while ago, Shigesato Itoi’s company, Hobonichi, released a lot of new MOTHER series merchandise related to the Hobonichi Planner. Here’s a quick run-down of what’s new:   MOTHER 2 Cover & Mr. Saturn Sticker This cover features the game’s iconic logo and deep red color. As a bonus, the cover comes with a giant Mr. Saturn sticker!   “Memories...Read More »

A video game collector recently found a complete, like-new copy of EarthBound at a swap meet. The discovery was a nice surprise – it wasn’t immediately visible and was in a box of a bunch of unrelated junk. In the end, he only paid $10 for what sometimes sells for $1000 or more on eBay. (For more EarthBound price info see here) Also of particular interest to me is the Best Buy sticker...Read More »

For the last two years, Hobonichi has released MOTHER-themed planner covers and related merchandise, including an Onett cover and a Saturn Valley cover. It looks like another set is planned for 2017, based on this teaser announcement. The announcement includes three small, cropped images: Show » So it seems like there’ll be at least a Winters cover and a Magicant cover. Of course...Read More »

A new Kirby game was recently released, and one of Kirby’s powers involves ESP. Kirby’s appearance and the ability’s description clearly refer to Ness: This isn’t the first time Kirby and EarthBound have teamed up, here’s an old video I made years ago: Thanks to everyone who sent in info about this new connection! ...Read More »

A Japanese game music fan by the name of keN Matsu recently hooked up a MIDI keyboard to a Super Famicom and showed off what it can do. He uses it to play a bunch of different music samples from Super Famicom/Super NES games, including Super Mario World, Final Fantasy IV, MOTHER 2, and more: After showing off the samples, he then re-creates actual songs from the game by playing multiple recording...Read More »
