Tips for Buying EarthBound

August 4th, 2014 | EarthBound, Images

adelinax sent this in a while back:

here is a scan from a German promotional booklet for the Wii-U that is available at larger electronics stores.

earhbound

I’m not 100% sure what it says – can anyone share a translation? Also, it’s kind of disappointing that the game hasn’t actually been translated into German, but I guess that’d be too much work/too much money for a simple Virtual Console game.

Here’s my quick effort-

The cult classic, now for Virtual Console! Earthbound is a unique role-playing game, previously available only in Japan or the US, that lampoons its own genre.
When a meteorite crashes down near his house, the young Ness takes on a mission to save the world from an alien invasion, meeting companions, fighting monsters, solving puzzles, and thwarting the plans of the villainous Giygas along the way. With its zany humor, cultural allusions, and a one-of-a-kind soundtrack, Earthbound is a true treasure of the 16-bit era. When will it belong to you?

Translating it to german would be nigh impossible, since there are a lot of puns that just wouldn’t work in german, or would at least loose its value.

Regarding the translation (I’m not good at this sorry :D):
“The cult classic, now for Virtual Console! Previously only released in Japan and the USA, EarthBound is an exceptional RPG, which makes fun of its own genre. When a meteorite crashes close to his home, the young boy Ness goes on a mission to save the world from an alien invasion. Meet companions, fight monsters, solve riddles and foil the plans of the nasty Giygas. With its crazy homour, cultural allusions and it’s exeptional soundtrack, EarthBound is a true treasure of the 16-bit-era. When is it yours?”

“The cult classic, now available on Virtual Console!
EarthBound which has only been released in Japan and in the USA before is a unique role playing game that pokes fun at its own genre. When a meteor crashes near his home the young Ness sets off to a long mission to save the world from an alien invasion. Meet companions, fight monsters, solve mysteries and defeat the plans of the mean Giygas. With its crazy humor, pop-cultural references and an unique soundtrack EarthBound is a real treasure of the 16-bit era. When will it be yours?”

This is just a quick and lazy translation I made, it’s really just an ad for the game. :)

A quick translation:
“The cult classic now for Virtual Console! EarthBound, previously only released in Japan and USA, is a unique RPG which satirizes its own genre. When a meteorite crashed near his house the boy Ness takes of to a big mission to save the world from an alien invasion. Meet partners, fight monsters, solve puzzles and disrupt the plans of the nasty Giygas. With crazy humor, cultural references and a unique soundtrack is EarthBound a true treasure of the 16-Bit era. When is it yours?”

How many times do we need to translate the same thing?

DS Piron said on Aug. 4, 2014

About five times, I’d say.

I just find it amazing that the translations are all so similar despite being done by different people. THAT is impressive.

I’ve never seen that Picky model before. Was it used in the strategy guide?

It would’ve been amazing if the game was translated into the 4 main European languages that aren’t English (German, French, Spanish and Italian). :D

A translaton:
“This cult classic is out now for Virtual Console! Previously only released in Japan and the US, EarthBound is a unique role-playing game that makes fun of its own genre. As a meteorite crashes near his home, the young Ness sets out on a huge mission to save the world from an outer-space invason. Meet companions, fight monsters, and solve puzzles to foil the plans of the villanous Giygas. With crazy humor, pop culture references, and a soundtrack of its very own, EarthBound is a true treasure of the 16-bit era. Will it be yours?”

Problem with German (and to a lesser degree French) is that the same script would be double that of the English script, especially problematic with the awful size limits and crazy internal structure. Not to mention assembly work needed for adding the accents.

And.. I wouldn’t worry too much about the puns/cultural stuff if NoE would be handling it. They’d check both Japanese and English scripts in the hypothetical scenario they handled it.
It wouldn’t have been pretty if 90’s NoE handled it (they translate from poor/beta/Engrish drafts -German translator for Secret of Mana begun before Woosley -and NoE discouraged staff from learning Japanese!- and was handed an awful Engrish draft so he had to MAKE UP THE SCRIPT and it was so bad NoE actually RETRANSLATED German Secret of Mana for the Wii VC. The better examples still suffer from the syndrome of FFII NES US/IV SNES US were the size limits obliged them to cut the original English text to pieces and try to fit in the most bare-bone information, by any means possible including typos.)

One other major barrier to relocalising EarthBound is – not only are the control codes a scripting language in and of themselves, they’re DIFFERENT from the ones used for Mother 2 (for those just tuning into this fandom and retro gaming in general, the Japanese version of EarthBound) – so that language might need rewriting a whole bunch of times, who knows?
