I would LOVE to see any type of release of Mother 3 in English, but none of us can really get our hopes up. But then again, EB came out on the Wii U VC… So really, who knows?

Daniel said on Apr. 8, 2014

They won’t translate it into english, because they are too lazy to do that. I won’t get my hopes up. The only reason they released Earthbound on the VC is, that it already had an official english version. They didn1t even translate it into different languages here in Europe. That would have been important with a game that has so much text. Though english is important, there are still people who don’t speak it or don’t know it well enough… -.-

The Eighth Doctor said on Apr. 8, 2014

Maybe. It’s more likely than getting a remake of Superman 64 at least.

Snowhead said on Apr. 8, 2014

We believe in you, Nintendo. =P

Pak-Man said on Apr. 8, 2014

I dunno. If Earthbound sold well on the VC (And I think it did) Nintendo might be willing to spend a few bucks on localization to release the long-desired sequel. Or maybe use that fan translation that some dude did that he offered to them for free. ;) Maybe toss in Mother 1 + 2 while they’re at it…

Vince94 said on Apr. 8, 2014

If it gets released in Japan, there’s going to be a reaction on Miiverse, just like last time. :D

game4brains said on Apr. 8, 2014

If it ever gets released in the U.S., there will be one of two possibilities:

1. Nintendo of America spends ages creating an official translation, and it ends up seeming lackluster to the fans due to Nintendo of America being Nintendo of America.

2. Nintendo of America gets lazy and ports Tomato’s fan translation, and all they do (aside from porting tech and stuff) is paste the fan translation’s staff into the credits.

And another thing,

@Pak-Man In reference to your Mother 1+2 remark, they already ported EarthBound, so there’s no need to port it again as part of Mother 1+2.

BoaTransistor said on Apr. 8, 2014

I reached out to you via twitter to gauge your thoughts on it, but since having some time to think about it, my opinion has changed a bit.

I’m not confident there will even be a Japanese release for Wii U, honestly. There are so many obvious releases that will come before MOTHER 3 is even considered. Nintendo is quite slow to release VC games.

I hope I’m wrong, but I can see them pushing a re-release to next generation. I’m glad to have picked up a cartridge while I had my chance in Akiba.

As for localization, sadly there’s next to no chance.

Erikku8 said on Apr. 8, 2014

I think Mother 3 has a shot, though I’m being very hopeful here. Like a kid waiting for Christmas.

PK_Fanta said on Apr. 8, 2014

I don’t have high hopes for it coming out in English, but I can promise you that, if it did, I’d buy a Wii U just for that.

FireflyMelody said on Apr. 8, 2014

This is looking to be a very good year, isn’t it?
And I’d buy a Wii U if MOTHER 1 came out on it, too. Then I could have the whole trilogy! Not unless, though – it’s still $300, so it’s still too expensive.
If I could afford it, I’d have one already!

Mike said on Apr. 8, 2014

I thought it was real for a moment :(

Matthew55 said on Apr. 8, 2014

I want Mother 1 before 3, just because it already has a translation and probably won’t be a huge project to release.

MaximTheArchmage said on Apr. 8, 2014

It’s not impossible, but it’s highly improbable. I could totally see a release in Japan if there was enough of a clamor for it. You have to remember… it took them a long, long time to port EarthBound. And that had an official translation.
I think the Earth Bound NES ROM is a much more likely candidate. It shouldn’t have the same legal issues that EarthBound did, save for Johnny B Goode. Maybe they’d advertise it as “The West’s first chance to purchase the predecessor to Virtual Console hit, EarthBound!”

Prayer For Safety said on Apr. 8, 2014

How every Mother fan felt after seeing todays Nintendo Direct http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sC6eMnk_tjw No Ness and no release date. One big middle finger to fans.

Permafry_42 said on Apr. 8, 2014

I’m still the idealist. I think all three will be rereleased, with Earthbound zero coming here first and mother 3 coming here later. Maybe I’m being naive, but considering I was right about Earthbound and the nay-sayers were wrong then, I’d rather keep up hope. Either way, I have a physical copy of the japanese version of mother 3, so even if it doesn’t get an official release I’m still going to enjoy the fan translation even if it is illegal. Plus I obviously bought the official rerelease of earthbound day one, so I’ve done all that I can to help show that there is a large audience for this series in North America and Europe.

dragonwarriorquestsagain said on Apr. 8, 2014

If they didn’t bother translating mother why would they translate mother 3? Sadly, it probably won’t receive a release in north america. I humbly accept this and am just glad for the fan translation. Can’t have everything, i guess.

gooieooie said on Apr. 8, 2014

I honestly believe it will see release here. Because one of two scenarios will play out, I think…

1. Nintendo releases everywhere. HUZZAH!

2. Nintendo makes a Japanese-exclusive release. Fans make petitions, call-ins, letters, e-mails and more. MOTHER 3 is released stateside. HOORAY!

In time… I do think it will happen.

Justin said on Apr. 8, 2014

I don’t think it’s likely but then I don’t know how much money Nintendo made on EarthBound.

@game4brains: Worth noting Nintendo is re-releasing the inferior GBA port of Super Mario World, which is of course already on the Virtual Console.

NessSmash said on Apr. 8, 2014

I’d say no here, because I’m still confident in my link here. ^

BusterTheFox said on Apr. 8, 2014

I can only hope. I’m getting legitimately worried about Ness being in Smash Bros. though, and if he’s not, I think that alone has merit to substantially reduce our chances at getting another Mother game in America (And Europe or whatever, but I’m an American, it’s my culture not to care about other countries apparently lol). Of course, it would also mark the first time in Smash Bros. history that a character that featured in the original game has been REMOVED from the series. Maybe he’ll quietly be in there without any big fanfare telling us “NESS IS BACK GUYS WOOHOO”. Not like Shiek and Zero Suit Samus. :\ Ha… I just finished watching the thing, so it’s kind of more on my mind than Mother 3 is right now. Haha.

Ess said on Apr. 8, 2014

Am I like the only one that remembers that, aside from a leak, we didn’t see Ness until way late in Brawl? Even after we saw Lucas? Calm down, Ness is in.

Chivi-chivik said on Apr. 9, 2014

It will probably be for Japan only. NOA always disappointed me in this kind of things… and I should worry about NOE (but I know that if NOA doesn’t do shit, neither will the NOE. It’s pretty sad… and outrageous).

@BusterTheFox Hey, Ness appears in the next SSB, so don’t worry. I’d worry about Lucas this time: he might not appear.

2Sang said on Apr. 9, 2014

I bet it gets released in Japan, but here it’s probably just wishful thinking. I could be wrong though because just over a year ago we all thought earthbound on vc was a pipe dream.

2Sang said on Apr. 9, 2014

Also, tomato i don’t know if you watched the direct last night, but the franklin badge is returning in smash bros.4

Hp_Shout said on Apr. 9, 2014

I’d imagine if Nintendo might give you a ring ‘mato if they wanted to translate to English? (Considering it’s already done) The question is, would the widespread existence of a fan translation ruin their business case for a North American release?

Anonymous said on Apr. 9, 2014

@2Sang

I must say, Toon Link looks fabulous with that Franklin Badge on.

The Man With No Name said on Apr. 9, 2014

The optimstic in me says yes they will bring it with full translation (most likely with tomato’s involvment).

The reason is because of how we got a lot of games that were previously Japan-Only (Sin and Punishment, SMB2J, etc.) but alas they were not translated to english just simply put up for sale.

Quite an interesting scenario we have here. Who would of thought a Mother 3 (re)-release could theoritically be this close.

LucozadeP said on Apr. 9, 2014

I think that MOTHER3 is more likely than MOTHER, but I genuinely think there’s a very slim chance of it even coming out in Japan. But Nintendo may surprise us.

Hyperstar96 said on Apr. 9, 2014

I want it to happen, but I doubt it. And even if it does, there’s no way it’s leaving Japan.

6arm79 said on Apr. 9, 2014

It seems to me that the only reason Nintendo would localize Mother 3 is if they felt that there was enough potential to profit. I don’t think there have been any unreleased-in-the-west JRPGs that have been translated for a VC release, so I would think that unless they took the cheap-o route and used the fan translation, it wouldn’t happen. Now, if some sort of remake or possibly compilation were released for closer to retail price, I think that would stand a good chance of getting translated. Such a remake probably won’t come for a while though, especially considering Nintendo’s current financial situation.

Seems like Itoi might eventually feel like making the Mother games “playable” to most gamers at some point in the future, though, as he did just last year?

So I’m still optimistic that it will happen eventually, but it probably won’t come soon, even though GBA games are now on VC.

Petal_Guy said on Apr. 10, 2014

It comes down to money. Mother 3 was never released in the U.S. so it would cost Nintendo money to localize and translate the game. That in itself is a gamble that doesn’t look feasible on Nintendo’s end to sell the game online for $8.

I do believe that Mother 3 could be released in Japan. Probably not now, but later down the road. I predict it would come out for the 3DS instead though. Granted, they’ve been releasing GBA games for the Wii U… that is a whole different subject though.

Mr_Saturn said on Apr. 11, 2014

Why is there more ‘Yes, but in Japan only’ votes than the ‘yes it will and it will come overseas’ votes. We need more optimists than realists!

Valerie said on Apr. 11, 2014

Agreed. Reality is overrated.
Call me Pollyanna, say I’m crazy as a loon
I want it to come out here, and I believe it will!

Bloo280 said on Apr. 11, 2014

People are going to be wondering about where Lucas came from, hence, also where Ness was from until Earthbound was released on the Virtual Console for Wii U. It would be highly rude of Nintendo to shun Lucas from gaining a reputation.

Observe the following possibilities:

1. Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U will reveal Lucas and/or Ness as returning characters. This will be informed by Nintendo Direct or the game’s release. Since people will remember a little bit about Lucas, Nintendo might release Mother 3 on the Virtual Console which is a good marketing move.
2. The same thing as the previous statement could occur, except Mother 3 will be released on Virtual Console first.
3. Just like the NES and SNES Virtual Console titles that were released (like Earthbound), Mother 3 will be localized with the current Gameboy Advance Games that are currently being released.

snesdude7 said on Apr. 12, 2014

I think we’re more likely to get a Mother 1 re-release because it would be simple to do. The most they’d have to do is change the title screen so that it said “MOTHER” again or add a subtitle like what they did with SMB.:The Lost levels!

Prazision said on Apr. 12, 2014

You nerds are way too hopeful, it’s never going to happen.

Ostricho said on Apr. 12, 2014

Maybe, but no need to call us nerds.

JamesBond007 said on Apr. 13, 2014

@snesdude 7 – this is easy to do, because original MOTHER title screen is still present in EarthBound Zero ROM.

Mother2fan said on Apr. 13, 2014

Hey, I’d be happy with Mother 1! (Blatant lie)

PiePusher11 said on Apr. 16, 2014

Am I the only one who would actually PREFER Mother 1?

neonix said on Apr. 17, 2014

In Japan, most probably. But I really don’t see a high likelihood of any localization for other markets.

I feel that if they were going to make that sort of investment, it’d have to be for a real re-release (not that that is very likely either).

Raiden said on Apr. 17, 2014

It’s sad but I don’t think we’ll ever see Mother 3 or 1 being put on the Virtual Console. I don’t have a Wii U but if the earthbound trilogy was on it I would almost have to get one. I was also one of the ones who voted for Yes but in Japan only. Sorry but I don’t have faith in Nintendo ever releasing the other games in the U.S.

Valder said on Apr. 18, 2014

Didn’t the staff of Brownie Brown make proof-of-concept English/European versions? They could continue that work and insert the text from the fan-translation if they feel like it.
I mean, the PR of Nintendo France was asked if they could hack the game to insert French text in Earthbound VC, and they said they don’t reject the possibility and are open to it. They didn’t though, but who knows about later releases?

Valder said on Apr. 18, 2014

Though that Brownie Brown wish of remaking the Mother games as a trilogy compilation would be welcome. Considering they haven’t forgot yet about the series in Super Smash Bros (like they did with Famicom Detective for example) leaves some hope.

Masked Man said on Apr. 25, 2014

Yeah including unused stuff with darker scenario.

Masked Man said on Apr. 25, 2014

It needs Yosuke”Sato”Okunari based on Thomley/Whitehead features like-unused scenario provided indeed.

Ness Polestar said on May. 4, 2014

Majority of EarthBound fans want to see re-released MOTHER 2 on Europe,MOTHER 1 on United States cancelled,MOTHER 3 available only in Japan(you meant over and over again why i don’t need to explain),mother gba compilation only Japan. We probably never gather information about EarthBound 64 four tech demos.

ejruss25 said on May. 6, 2014

Honestly, I’m just thankful that EarthBound was released on VC. I’m gonna take what I can get, really.

Mr. Carpainter said on Jul. 2, 2014

As far as I can tell, its likelihood all depends on Lucas’s reappearance in Smash Bros. Universe. If he’s there, Nintendo would be stupid not to (But they’re NOA, so you never can tell). If Lucas doesn’t return, there is no reason to rerelease MOTHER 3 at all.
