Tips for Buying EarthBound

August 29th, 2013 | Interviews, MOTHER 3

Good ol’ Jose Otero, now at IGN, very recently talked to Reggie Fils-Aime about EarthBound and MOTHER 3 – check out the article here!

Reggie basically answers with his usual PR-style answer of “we’re always _____”, but when pressed he says:

I have nothing to announce regarding Mother 3 at this time.

Still, hopefully now that EarthBound has some momentum, maybe a release of the first game or third game could happen sometime. I dunno, maybe Itoi just needs some more prodding :P

*prods Chewy*

Thanks to everyone who sent in the news tip!

42 Comments to Reggie Says Nothing about a MOTHER 3 Release

Ha ha, I JUST sent this to you when you posted this! :P It’s not surprising, but definitely disappointing. Sigh…

delectabit said on Aug. 29, 2013

I dunno. I feel like that’s the answer that they’re always going to give when asked about something that they haven’t announced yet. It’s like a stock response. Prodding them about it won’t get us any new information, just gotta wait for a hopeful announcement.

Pep said on Aug. 29, 2013

Yeah I agree. I don’t think Reggie would give a public announcement out of the blue even if there was something in the works, haha. We’ll just have to wait.

asdf said on Aug. 29, 2013

I’m really not surprised. I’m not sure how they would release it to begin with, as the 3DS doesn’t have a GBA Virtual Console (barring the Ambassador Program), so if they were to translate and re-release a GBA game, it would no doubt be a bigger deal than something to let loose in an IGN interview.

Mato said on Aug. 29, 2013

I agree, I doubt he’d reveal anything in an unscheduled/impromptu interview. But I wish he’d bring Bigfoot Pizza back.

halloween said on Aug. 29, 2013

I would say that Reggie has no impact on Mother 3 release chances. All we can hope for is a Japanese VC release for Mother 1 and 3. NoA should easily be able to bring over Mother 1, but Mother 3 would be a real miracle because they don’t currently own a translation of it.

They probably would never do either because there’s no nostalgia attached to them over here and they perceive the fanbase as a handful of people on the Internet who obviously must have pirated them to play them.

johnr754 said on Aug. 29, 2013

Meh, that’s fine. It could be revealed later in a Nintendo Direct or something, but for now, I mostly expect Mother 1/Earth Bound Zero on the VC.

JB2448 said on Aug. 30, 2013

“…at this time.” seems pretty suspect, especially considering the Onett Times Miiverse announcement community.

Captain Cab said on Aug. 30, 2013

Yawn. Typical Reggie non-answer, who cares at this point. No need to rule out Mother 3 just based on that. Like we have him to thank in any way for EB being re-released in the U.S. anyways. That was thanks to Iwata and Itoi being so impressed with the outpouring of support from U.S. and EU fans on Miiverse, Iwata even said that himself. I have no doubt NCL finally threw the hammer down and forced them to re-release the game, lawyers and excuses be damned, HA! Anyways, the heck with Reggie, back to reveling in Earthbound’s resounding success on VC. Hey, I’ll second bringing back the Bigfoot pizza too. One of the best things from the ’90s, you’d think it’d be a no brainer.

FlyingManCourage said on Aug. 30, 2013

I agree with you all. This is pretty much a standard industry answer. However, there is something to be said for the fact that this is even being addressed. From my perspective, this little nugget of news only increases my suspicions of another release eventually.

Tatsuma said on Aug. 30, 2013

This is Reggie we are talking about here everything captain cab said is right we just have to rememeber that Reggies body just isn’t ready for MOTHER 3.

Vince94 said on Aug. 30, 2013

^ This, and EarthBound’s only been out for a while now. If Mother 3 were to be released on the Japanese VC at some point, it would probably be the same time next year.

Big Foot pizza was the best.

If they say they arn’t going to announce anything about it means that they have something to anounce about it but they aren’t yet!

September said on Aug. 30, 2013

Meh, can you really expect anything else from Reggie? I’m a patient person, I’ve waited this long for EB on VC, I can wait for MOTHER 3. It seems like it’s not *completely* out of the question, though.

bobsburgerking said on Aug. 30, 2013

nintendo will release mother 3. they’re just not failing hard enough. i bet after the holiday season they’ll have no choice. as much as i like nintendo, they’re looking really really bad. 2ds? mario 3d world? wind waker re-release? how the hell are they gonna compete w/ two “more powerful” machines both boasting a new call of duty game? (i know wii u have new cod as well, but it’ll “graphically inferior”.)

once nintendo is left in the console war dust, mother 3 will be released to the clamoring fans.

DJMankiewicz said on Aug. 30, 2013

Mother 3 would be a tricky proposition.

There’s no way they’d release it as a GBA cartridge, that’s ruled out right from the start.

There MAY be a chance they’d port the game, as in a true recoding and translation, as a 3DS game. If that were the case, such a thing might not see a release in Japan since the fanbase for Mother 3 in Japan is a lot smaller than here. However, that’d take a committed effort.

The last option is to put the GBA game on the 3DS virtual console. GBA games, unlike the rest of the 3DS VC games, play “natively”, that is, without the need for complicated emulation. However, it also prevents GBA games from supporting any of the neat emulator features like saved states or even the ability to pause the game at any time with the “Home” button. This can be seen with the Ambassador GBA games and their odd behavior.

For reasons unknown, Nintendo has yet to actually sell those Ambassador GBA games. I’m not sure why, as I don’t think anyone would complain about the lack of emulator “features” in those games considering they’d play pixel perfect without any emulator based glitches (well, almost pixel perfect, since NO Virtual Console game on 3DS supports multiplayer, and that includes the GBA games, still such a limitation wouldn’t apply to Mother 3).

Here’s the trick. They’d need to alter the GBA ROM. While they’ve made SOME small alterations to old ROMs over the years, generally they never undertake any grand projects and are content to simply leave the game as-is. The tricky nature of “hacking” a ROM also really slows down the process, and considering the price they are charging, there’s not much return on time invested.

Now, I would HOPE that Brownie Brown still had the source code to the GBA game. This would allow them to alter the ROM and make a new one without even worrying about “hacking” the game. Any changes they needed to make would be far easier, as Mato can attest to. However, there’s no promises on that front. Even fairly recent games like Okami had all their resources lost when they got to making the Wii port, resulting in a need to recode vast parts of the game from scratch.

Still, even with the benefit of the source code, a project like translation would be a much bigger undertaking than any previous release of an old Virtual Console title. In fact, generally they steer away from Japan exclusive word heavy games like RPGs for Virtual Console release. Heck, even the already English Final Fantasy 6 was unaltered, even though there’s a much better translation now (the VC release is still called Final Fantasy III). They’ll occasionally release a game if there’s very little text but still won’t bother to translate it, just releasing the Japanese game “as is” with a warning on the VC store.

IF they did this, it would be the first time they’d taken such a major effort in a virtual console release. I’d love it, we all would, but at that point, Nintendo may very well just consider porting the game to 3DS outright, considering the work they’d already be doing.

Now, at this point everyone’s thinking “Well what about our favorite fan translation? That’s working fine!”. The only issue with such a thing is it WAS, in the end, a hack job. IF Nintendo opted to license the translated script and patch itself from Mato and the gang, they’re still releasing a slightly glitchy version of Mother 3. The text slowdown issues are a direct result of the need to “hack” a poorly coded text display system. Nintendo might not have the patience to figure out how to fix such glitches, preferring to work directly with source code (if it still exists) so as to resolve such problems directly instead of hacking them in.

I guess what I’m saying is the chances of a translated release of Mother 3 are about as good as the chances of a direct port of Mother 3 to the 3DS. I don’t know what those chances actually are though… I’d say we still shouldn’t give up. Stranger things have happened.

MarioMario1009 said on Aug. 30, 2013

Darn, should have guessed. XD But it would be a perfect match to put Mother 3 on both 3DS AND Wii U, since the Wii U was confirmed to have GBA games at one point on the Virtual Console.

SushiGummy said on Aug. 30, 2013

“Nothing to announce” isn’t the same as “no plans.” If there were no plans, I think he’d just say so.

Like what’s already been mentioned, what would he say in the case that there were plans? He wouldn’t just all-out say so and ruin any surprise.

Arekou said on Aug. 30, 2013

Actually he said “At this time” it could be latter, Right now I am still happy about Earthbound

Mariotti said on Aug. 30, 2013

I think if we DO get a Mother 3 release, it’s going to be on the 3DS if anything…

GrapeEscape said on Aug. 30, 2013

I don’t really think that we should even begin to fathom a GBA Virtual Console on the 3DS. Nintendo has already said that GBA games would be available as Virtual Console titles for the WII U at a later time. And with the money making machine that EarthBound has been for Nintendo, I doubt that they’re going to put any games in the series on handhelds any time soon. At least not until the Wii U builds up some good stability.

Valder said on Aug. 31, 2013

I wish Nintendo would make their Mother 3 N64 as they envisioned it back then, with all the crazy ideas they had originally included as sidequests.
And release it internationally, of course!
It’s not like that’s impossible today. Hudson Soft did ran in a similar situation with Tengai Makyou 3 when they managed to revive the overly ambitious cancelled PC-Engine version as a full fledged PS2 game.
While I’m at it I might as well wish for a remake / new entry of “Marvelous” for the Super Famicom.

LuigiBlood said on Aug. 31, 2013

Actually they can put GBA games to the Wii U VC… they announced GBA VC for Wii U a while ago. I remember that it was in the Nintendo Direct where the Wii U VC was announced.

KingOfSwords said on Aug. 31, 2013

Mato, you need to change the title of this article. “Reggie Says No MOTHER 3 Release in the Works” is incredibly misleading when in fact Reggie did not say anything of the sort.

Geppu said on Aug. 31, 2013

Of course there are no plans for NoA to release the game at this time. There are no plans Nintendo of JAPAN to release it either. What Japan does is what ultimately dictates what we get on the Virtual Console here, not the other way around. Don’t start bombarding the guy with these questions just yet- what to see what NoJ’s next move is before making any movements.

DJMankiewicz said on Aug. 31, 2013

Eh, I miss Howard Lincoln.

Mato said on Aug. 31, 2013

KingofSwords: Yeah, you’re right, that was poor wording on my part. I’ve updated the title.

G.Wicks said on Aug. 31, 2013

Reggie wouldn’t have any information on a Mother 3 re-release unless kne is planned for Japan first. I don’t think NOA would release outside Japan unless there were first plans to rerelease it inside Japan.

What the EarthBound release has taught us is that NOA won’t listen to American fans, but when their bosses in Kyoto say “You must release this”, THEN they’ll listen. If Mother 3 is rereleased in Japan for Wii U virtual console (and personally I believe that to be quite likely) then let’s just be sure to politely bombard their miiverse with requests! :)

Douche McCallister said on Sep. 1, 2013

^
What this guy said.
It’s the best chance we’ve got. We just need Mother 1 and 3 released on Japan VC, then we can use our MiiVerse bombarding techniques lol.

Anonymous said on Sep. 2, 2013

Welp, if it isn’t mario 78 or Zelda 43, NOA gives no cares about their fans.

misterdigi35 said on Sep. 3, 2013

While I do think it is frustrating to be an American fan of Nintendo, I have to believe that they do care, just not in the way we want them to. Otherwise we wouldn’t really have any good games coming out at all.

With that said. “Reggie says nothing about a Mother 3 realease.” This is not surprising. He also didn’t say anything about an EarthBound re-release. The people who did that were Iwata, and the American guy with the light colored hair whose name escapes me. So why would Reggie in any way say anything about a Mother 3 release? He LITERALLY was not involved.

Marcos said on Sep. 7, 2013

Mato, now that eb got released and finally got its time in the spotlight, what do you want to happen in the future? I’m asking because I read that you at times want to freeze eb central. Do you want mother 3 to be released here also or….?

Mato said on Sep. 8, 2013

I don’t know if I specifically want things to happen or have certain goals in mind – I think it’d be great if more of the games got released, of course. I think all the stuff that’s happened the last few months has really changed how EBC works and I feel bad that I don’t update with smaller things like I used to. I think all the big stuff that’s been happening lately has burned me out a little bit too, but it’s probably just a phase.

PSIpunky said on Sep. 18, 2013

I read that at one point, when EB was announced for Japan only on the Wii U, that some folks were planning something again to show their support.

Always wondered what that was.

Anyway, it’s nice to read these small tidbits, no matter how little or non-Mother related they are.

I’m surprised they haven’t even touched it. Earthbound is doing so well on the VC..

They’re missing out on a lot of money.
