Tips for Buying EarthBound

July 29th, 2013 | EarthBound, Itoi

A couple people have pointed out that there’s now a new Miiverse community called “Onett Times” that’s supposed to be like a developer’s room.

(Thanks to Stan, Zeke, and vid for the pics!)

Also, the official EarthBound page on Nintendo’s site has been updated with a message from Itoi:

itoi-message

This appears to be the same message Itoi posted earlier this year before MOTHER 2’s re-release in Japan (see here).

So I’m guessing some sort of special Miiverse is being set up for EarthBound fans sort of like the special Itoi Miiverse that was made for Japanese fans earlier this year. If so, that’d be cool. It’d also be cool if localizers who worked on the game could post in there too, but it seems too early to say anything for sure.

Whatever the case, it’s amazingly awesome to see Nintendo doing so much for EarthBound’s re-release! I tell you, it almost feels like some crazy dream :P

UPDATE: Deputy-editor Tom posted this as the first post on the new Miiverse channel:

I still can’t believe the attention Nintendo is giving to us

pk_stan said on Jul. 29, 2013

I tagged you in a few pics of it on Facebook.

There’s not really much there.

I really hope this is all leading up to something big for EarthBound fans in North America, although releasing EarthBound outside of Japan for WiiU was already huge and largely unexpected. I’d love to seem them release a 3DS Mother 1+2+3 compilation in the U.S. Oh, and I really should get a WiiU soon :) I’d love to take part in these Miiverse forums.

Nintendo is definitely giving this game very special treatment. I know they want it to sell well, and it’s a big deal to see it again after 18 years, but part of me optimistically feels like they’re building up to something bigger.

Pretty cool, regardless of whether more comes from it or not! I never thought anything close to this would ever happen. The recognition alone is refreshing.

pk_stan said on Jul. 29, 2013

There’s a post in it now! I tagged you in a screenshot from my phone. I’ll get a Wii U pic ASAP.

It quickly became a Mother 3 petition, haha.

I’m really happy Nintendo’s doing such big stuff for Earthbound. Remember when we would freak out over little things?

Nintendo finally regonizes us…

EBMarcus said on Jul. 29, 2013

This is pretty cool… I wonder how many people involved with the game 18 years ago are still around? I left a long time ago…

FuzzyPicklez said on Jul. 29, 2013

Hey, the message forgot to capitalize the B in EarthBound! Nintendo is usually so consistent about that…

Nintendo now realizes EarthBound is more popular than they thought. It’s bringing in more money than they imagined. Maybe now they’ll do Mother 1 and 3 aswell.

Tourist said on Jul. 29, 2013

It’s the latest Earthbound news and information. I sort of doubt that means it’s a place for staff to muse about Earthbound.

The Earthbound community counter is now over 21000… Which I think is player posts (those who purchased the game) so Nintendo may be looking to bring Earthbound Zero and/or Mother 3 to the VC (since Nintendo announced GBA agames for Wii U, oddly).

I’m surprised Nintendo hasn’t contacted Mato yet due to his generous offer.

Butt Lord said on Jul. 29, 2013

Announcement Miiverse?
I smell Mother 3…

BusterTheFox said on Jul. 29, 2013

@Tourist: Maybe they did but he’s in a contract to keep quiet about it for now. ;)

This bodes very well for us. They’ve been posting about EarthBound a whole TON on the official Nintendo of America Twitter. Pretty much half the posts are about EarthBound. They’re doing really well about advertising it, too. Even people who aren’t fans of the series want to try it out since they know Ness from Super Smash Bros.. I hope as much as any other fan that the other two games come to America!

Warpstar said on Jul. 29, 2013

@Tourist: But EarthBound is the first VC game to get any sort of “Announcement” community. It seems weird for it to just be there to say “Hey, there’s a guide you can use. It’s been there for over a week now, but we thought we’d let you know again by making an entirely new forum just for this ONE post.”

Neko Knight said on Jul. 29, 2013

I wonder how they would release MOTHER 1 and MOTHER 3… What I mean by that is, would they release the Earthbound NES prototype? And would they still simply call it Earthbound instead of MOTHER? And would they rename MOTHER 3 as Earthbound 2? Or maybe even Earthbound Advance? I think a lot of people are aware of the MOTHER title though, so they might leave MOTHER 3 the same…hmmm…a lot of things to think about…

Linkzcap said on Jul. 30, 2013

This is something else! I’d never believe it if someone told me this would one day happen. Nintendo is actually, really, hyping up for Earthbound. If this means Mother 3 will get an official release, just shoot me and send me to heaven

Tourist said on Jul. 30, 2013

Moher 2 was the only other Virtual Console community to get a subcommunity… but it was just for Itoi and I think they dissolved it since then.

I would say they could do some translated Itoi posts… but it’s not a developers room… it’s news.

It’s GOTTA be announcements for future releases… or some miiverse challenges. Recently, Nintendo posted a contest in the Super Luigi U community for players to try and beat th game collecting as few coins as possible… then posting their screenshot in Miiverse of their stats screen.
I can’t think of what they could along those lines for Earhbound… but it’s always a possibility.

johnr754 said on Jul. 30, 2013

@Tourist;

I also think this could be for challenges, such as posting for stuff like the Sword of Kings challenge, the T-Rex Bat challenge, and more.

I am also a bit hopeful for news abut EarthBound Zero (which probably would be known as “Earth Bound” and Mother 3. It would be even more hilarious if Mother 3 or EarthBound Zero aunched in the American VC before Japan’s.

Chivi-chivik said on Jul. 30, 2013

I’d like this series of games to be completely revived (I also wish a 3DS remake XD). It is one of the greatest Nintendo franchises but it’s still underappreciated… ;_;

antiaverage said on Jul. 30, 2013

I hope everyone who can post to this does so and says thank you! A thriving and positive commentary on that Miiverse could do wonders for the series.

Pak-Man said on Jul. 30, 2013

So an Earthbound news hub means Earthbound news.

I just had a thought…

Wouldn’t we be just a year away (Almost to the day) from the appropriate date to release a Mother 25th Anniversary Collection?

misterdigi35 said on Jul. 30, 2013

This is pretty darn cool.

Tourist said on Jul. 31, 2013

Well, if it’s one thing we learned it’s persistence in Miiverse can pay off. If fans keep clamoring for Mother 3 and Earthbound Zero, and if Earthbound has strong sales numbers, we may see the full trilogy released before it’s all said and done.

Vukadin said on Jul. 31, 2013

Wow…

This is REALLY cool for Nintendo to do such a thing…

… Am I in Moonside?

Beebo said on Aug. 1, 2013

Here’s a question… if it wasn’t released in the US or they didn’t have a basically finished product for it but they still want to do follow up on the success…

Would they finish the old NES code and then put it up as VC content or would they just redo the game and make it an eShop game? How many people can still program NES stuff? Isn’t that a lot harder than just using new development tools?
