Tips for Buying EarthBound

April 6th, 2013 | Auctions, EarthBound

Have you ever wanted your own actual copy of EarthBound? Then, uhh, how would you like TEN copies of EarthBound?

ten earthbounds
(Also, for some reason the pictures don’t show 10 copies at once)

The starting bid on this set of 10 EarthBound cartridges is $3,000, so be prepared to spend a lot 😯 Buying in bulk is usually a good deal, and with the average EarthBound cartridge price at $200, that means this is… Wait a minute! That’s a horrible deal!

I don’t always get jealous. But when I do, you cannot grasp the true form of my jealousy’s attack.

I think we gamers should buy all recent video game’s cult classics which doesn’t do well in sales, and then sell them away in the future when it gets popular and expensive.

Hukky said on Apr. 6, 2013

I wonder if there are other collectors who stock up on copies of EB like that. No wonder the prices are so high if that is the case!

JimJam707 said on Apr. 6, 2013

Then you could play 10 at once!

Think of all the cultists contained in those cartridges…

FlyingManCourage said on Apr. 6, 2013

Am the only one who suspects these carts aren’t legit?

deshayzilla said on Apr. 6, 2013

Can there be a new rule for the Earthbound community? If so, I propose we make it “Thou shall only own 2 copies of Earthbound, 1 for recreational use and 1 just incase the first one fails”.

This will help spread Earthbound to all the fans.

FlyingManCourage said on Apr. 6, 2013

Let me explain myself:

1. Carts are too perfect. Not a single sticker shown shows any sign or wear. Same with back stickers. You can clean the cart, but you can’t fix the stickers.

2. Why would you sell all 10 at once? Everyone knows these are selling like they are gold-plated and at a rate of at least 10 or more sold per day. You’d make far more money selling them individually.

3. He provides a picture of a counterfeit box. Counterfeit may be the incorrect word but you know what I’m talking about. It’s an unofficial, fan-made box. Big red flag right there.

4. No guides. You really think he just happened to get his hands on 10 perfect copies of EarthBound carts with no signs of wear or use or anything…..and not a single one had the guide with it?

EVERYTHING about this auction screams fake to me. There’s just not a legitimate, sensical reason for selling these ten at a time.

These are mad easy to replicate too. There’s no point in giving someone $300 for a hunk of plastic with Earthbound programmed into it even if it is real though.

NEss said on Apr. 7, 2013

Yeah I think they’re fake. Don’t spend 3000 dollars on bootlegs!
That being said, there is also a chance that they’re 100% legit, it’s not that hard to keep a cart in good condition and one of the labels is slightly ripped. The best thing would be to ask the seller some questions.

NorthofOnett said on Apr. 9, 2013

So I was going to say that this listing was fake, but I am now 99% sure that every single copy of EarthBound this guy is selling is in fact real.

The first thing I do to see if a cart is real or not is look at the label. Especially with labels for EarthBound, they can be pretty hard to pull off. Not only does every object on the label have to be in exactly the right spot, but the saturation and contrast of the printed label need to match up with a real label. And upon looking at the carts in detail, everything checks out. They are all real.

Also, I checked out the sellers previous feedback (feedback he left as a buyer). There were 10 listings within the past 90 days for EarthBound carts he purchased at various prices. That pretty much cements the fact that these cartridges are real. So while the seller may not be very bright, he’s not breaking any of eBay’s policies or selling bootlegs.

Anonymous said on Apr. 9, 2013

Wow… I saw this listing not too long ago, but I never thought it would have it’s own article. Kind of feels weird that something I found made it to Earthbound Central. It’s probably deserving though… Trying to sell 10 Earthbound cartridges for 300$ each is downright retarded. I can only end this comment with a generic meme quote, so “Yo dawg, I heard you like Earthbound, so I put 9 Earthbound with your Earthbound, so you could play Earthbound while you play Earthbound.”

Bucky said on Apr. 9, 2013

Sounds like everyone in here is unaware of the free market. This guy can sell these at any price he wants; he’s obviously interested in profiting from it. Now that the average used cart is about 200 dollars, 300 will be a deal in a few years.

I just hope he was kind enough to replace all the internal batteries. It would suck for some loser to buy these, and only lose them to battery acid in a few years.

Anonymous said on Apr. 9, 2013

Sounds like Bucky is unaware of the concept of fiscal prudence. If he was interested in profiting, he’d be much better served to sell them individually. How many bids now? Oh still zero.

Bucky said on Apr. 9, 2013

Anonymous, I’m not the seller, so I don’t care. It’s his property, and he can do as he pleases.

Bucky said on Apr. 11, 2013

It’s sad when a person has to substantiate their product based on a website that reposts their ebay listing.

Anonymous said on Apr. 11, 2013

No offense, but why do you seem to feel so bad for the guy on ebay? No one is trying to deny his right to ask whatever he wants for his product, people just know that it’s a terrible business move on his part (especially considering how many people think it’s fake). Honestly, I don’t care if he charges a million dollars for them, but I have an equal right to think he’s making a mistake by doing so. This article isn’t meant to attack the seller, probably just to point out that it’s a bad deal for people looking to buy and also for people who know the price well enough to have somewhat of a laugh. People have a right to express things like this. Also, on an unrelated note, I’m pretty sure everyone that uses this site is an Earthbound fanboy/girl. We wouldn’t use it if we weren’t fans. I’m not trying to argue, but I just don’t want this to be upsetting for you. No one really did anything wrong to anyone. Besides, if the guy saw this, it’s really only helping him. (Also if you respond to me at all, keep in mind that I’m not the anonymous who was talking about fiscal prudence. I’m the one right before him that said the price was retarded.)

Anonymous said on Apr. 11, 2013

Bucky is clearly the seller and/or knows the seller. Bucky already went out of his way to deny being the seller even though no one accused Bucky of being the seller.

Just so you know Bucky, any good businessman will tell you that you are supposed to buy in bulk and sell individually, not the other way around. Don’t be mad at us because no one was interested in your dumb listing.

Bucky said on Apr. 11, 2013

No, I’m not the seller. I’ve been posting on here for some time. If I had ten copies of Earthbound, you wouldn’t see them on eBay; they’d be on my game shelf. I don’t have a physical copy of Earthbound.

If you don’t believe me, this is me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZHS0ns3sSw
I state in the video that I’m using a emulator to play Earthbound. If I owned ten copies, if I had 1000 or more dollars to spend on them, do you think I’d be using an emulator and a rom for a (bad) Youtube video?

Anyway, I was defending the seller because he has a right to do what he wants. He shouldn’t be hassled by some trolls on Earthbound Central. If you want to be a baby about it, be my guest.

Anonymous said on Apr. 11, 2013

Alright, that’s fine I guess. If that’s how you feel, then I’m done. I don’t really want to argue, nor do I even care.

Bucky said on Apr. 11, 2013

Then why did you persist, and insult me?

You guys are too easy to set off.

Anonymous said on Apr. 11, 2013

Honestly Bucky the only baby/troll here is you. You came in here all upset that a bunch of EarthBound fans were discussing an EarthBound auction on an EarthBound fansite. You then resort to calling someone a fanboy for understanding good business and then you post a video of yourself proclaiming EarthBound to be your favorite game of all time. You have resorted to name-calling on three different occasions now. You are the only one who has insulted anybody. It’s sad when people think they have some authority over what can be discussed/posted on the internet. Go back to your cave, troll.

“You guys are too easy to set off?” Showing your true troll colors which most of were easily able to identify from the minute you started to commenting. Your only purpose in commenting this entire time was to upset anybody who thought differently from you. You are a waste of time and, like the other anonymous, I am done feeding you. Bye Bye!

Anonymous said on Apr. 11, 2013

Honestly, I wasn’t insulting you, nor am I angry in any way. I was just saying that hurting the seller in any was not something was intended by anyone. Plus, it’s not even like all potential buyers probably saw this article anyway. It’s just a bit overpriced. I really would like for this to not be something that upsets you, but I wasn’t trolling anyone. I was just saying that I think it’s not a smart idea. It’s not like I’m one of those guys who goes around saying Lil Wayne is better than Tupac. I’m just saying my point of view that can be easily supported. Surely you wouldn’t choose to buy either, am I wrong? I’m sorry if I came across as insulting, but I was really trying to be respectful. I hope you’re not mad, because that’s not why I wrote what I wrote. In fact, it’s the opposite. I was just saying that nobody was trying to take away the seller’s freedom.

Anonymous said on Apr. 11, 2013

On an unrelated note, (and I’m sorry for multiple posts) I checked out your youtube vid (not that I didn’t believe you, just to see what it was). Your glasses look a lot like mine 🙂

Bucky said on Apr. 12, 2013

Which fricking Anonymous is which? Could some of you grow a pair and use a NICKNAME?

“You came in here all upset that a bunch of EarthBound fans were discussing an EarthBound auction on an EarthBound fansite.”
I was not “all upset.” If you weren’t anonymous, I’d look up your ebay listing and post about one of them on my blog. You wouldn’t like that, would you? I generally come on here now and then to see some updates on the actual game; like when Itoi announced he was working on the VC version of Earthbound. I don’t really like how Mato presents himself as the god of Earthbound. I appreciate his site and Mother 3 translation, but I’m over Earthbound fans. They’re hipsters.

“ou then resort to calling someone a fanboy for understanding good business and then you post a video of yourself proclaiming EarthBound to be your favorite game of all time.”
So, you’re using a subjective “good” when discussing my views vs. yours. Ebay is not about “good” business. It’s about people selling their belongings and making a profit. Had Mato not posted this blog, then that guy would either have sold his 10 copies for 3000 dollars, or eventually take them down when no one bought them. If someone is stupid enough to buy ten copies for 3000 dollars, which really isn’t that bad, then that’s their right. It’s the seller’s right to do what he wants as well. If I were him, I would not have done it, and I would have definitely sold them separately later on when used prices went up. See, I agree with you that it is a better idea to sell them separately, but I don’t agree with a bunch of people accusing someone of selling fake copies or making a fuss about doing what he wants with his property. If you guys were the government, the world would be a dismal place.

“You have resorted to name-calling on three different occasions now. You are the only one who has insulted anybody.”

You said this: “Sounds like Bucky is unaware of the concept of fiscal prudence.”

“Bucky is clearly the seller and/or knows the seller. Bucky already went out of his way to deny being the seller even though no one accused Bucky of being the seller.”

“Don’t be mad at us because no one was interested in your dumb listing.”

Yeah, you didn’t call me names at all, except “dumb.” Instead, you attempted to insult my intelligence and accused me of being the seller. Name calling doesn’t bother me. I’m a big boy. What bothers me is when someone insults my intelligence while also being a vindictive troll. Any responses I made to you were entirely called for. If you had said any of it to my face…

“Your only purpose in commenting this entire time was to upset anybody who thought differently from you. You are a waste of time and, like the other anonymous, I am done feeding you. Bye Bye!”
First of all, I’m glad you won’t reply.

Second of all, I didn’t want to set anyone off. That doesn’t mean that I was unaware that I would, though, because I don’t care. I’m not going to walk on eggshells while anonymous Earthbound fans clamor about someone setting a price on a product. When you go to the grocery store, do you ever try to bargain for a better price, or do you pay the money on the price tag? Most people, with any sense, don’t try to haggle about set prices, because logic dictates that if you don’t want to pay that price, YOU DON’T HAVE TO BUY IT.

I think this may be a different person:

“I was just saying that hurting the seller in any was not something was intended by anyone.”

Are you sure? It seems like a lot of people would gladly give this guy bad reviews on eBay and other unwarranted things. Even though you’re being polite, I have to remind you that you do not speak for everyone. Neither do I.

“It’s not like I’m one of those guys who goes around saying Lil Wayne is better than Tupac. I’m just saying my point of view that can be easily supported.”
That’s generally because my opinion is outside the norm for the people commenting here. If you came to a website of mine and had a differing opinion, chances are most people wouldn’t agree with you.

“Surely you wouldn’t choose to buy either, am I wrong?”
If I had 3000 dollars to spend freely, I would probably be quite wealthy. So, if I could afford it, I’d jump on ten copies for that price. As I said before, the prices show no signs of lowering. If I wanted to, I could sell individual copies for more in five to ten years. By then, hopefully North America will have a legitimate copy of Earthbound, or people will wise up and choose the Rom over an overpriced plastic cartridge. I spent around thirty bucks on Final Fantasy VI last year, and still feel somewhat cheated.

“but I was really trying to be respectful.”
I understand, and I didn’t directly respond to your post, but rather the other anonymous dude.

“I hope you’re not mad”
I get mad when people do stupid things in traffic, or distort the truth. For instance, my father-in-law once said “Robert Plant said John Paul Jones was parking cars.” A few years before, I told him that Plant said that “John Paul Jones is parking the car.” I got a little annoyed about that. But, no, I’m not mad at you.

“I was just saying that nobody was trying to take away the seller’s freedom.”

Mato does, even if he doesn’t realize it. He’s written a lot of good things about getting good deals on Earthbound carts, but, even if it’s unconsciously, he appears to think he can influence the market. If I were selling an item on eBay, I wouldn’t want someone posting about it on another website, especially in such a nicht market. If you were trying to sell your favorite item, like a guitar or portrait, and you named a high price for it, would you want someone undermining you? People sell overpriced items all the time, and it’s up to the buyers, not Mato or anyone else, to decide whether or not it’s fair.

“Your glasses look a lot like mine”
My significant other picked those out for me. She has the impression that I’m a good-looking guy; I hope she never loses that illusion.

Vukadin said on Apr. 12, 2013

@Bucky

Calm the fuc* down, stop trying to cause drama in an otherwise peaceful fandom. Not all of us are hipsters, and Mato isn’t our God. He’s just a nice guy we all have respect for. If you hate him or us, leave the site; no one cares.

Frank said on Apr. 12, 2013

Sorry about not using a name, bro. That probably would have helped. I think I’m going with Frank from here on, because it’s not only my first name, but one of Earthbound’s coolest dudes (I just hope no one else is using it already). Anyway, I’m glad you’re being cool towards me. I figured if I was nice to you, you’d return the favor. Not that I’m saying anyone is wrong, per se. Everyone here makes an awesome point in their argument. I could definitely see where the other anon was coming from, especially because he generally thought along the same lines as me, but you did really well to explain your view also. You are right about Mato having somewhat of of an influence on the market. Personally, I think it’s a good thing, because it gives people an opportunity to be more informed and find an optimal deal, (especially because I’m currently looking for my own cart right now, as my mom doesn’t want me to download emulators or ROMs, because she’s really paranoid of computer viruses, even though I used them a couple years ago and didn’t have any problems… Don’t mean to vent, but I wish I could play the series with the convenience of emulators again ;-;) but I see where you’re coming from and you have every right to your own way of thinking. From a buyer’s standpoint, Mato is providing a very useful service, and free of charge, but it does make it a little harder for the seller, so I can see why you feel the way you do. Regardless that I disagree, I’m glad that you opened my eyes to a different perspective. Also the comment about your significant other was pretty funny. I hope all stays well with her. Also, in response to Vukadin, I am so glad you agree with me about our fandom. I tend to think the same exact way. In general, all the people in the comments seem cool, Mato, Reid, Chewy, Satsy, nor even Falcon, which some people tend not to like all seem like nice dudes. Especially Mato, because from my experience, he always has the best of intentions, and he does so much for us to earn his position of authority, in my opinion. You have pretty much summed up the way I feel about our community in one sentence and for that, I thank you. Just from the way you think in that regard, you seem like you would be pretty nice if I talked to you, because you seem like a person that would be able to see the good in things.

Vukadin said on Apr. 12, 2013

@Frank

Thanks for the compliment, I kind of feel bad now for saying that FF7 is overrated… Just disregard what I said.

You also seem like a nice person, especially the fact that you took the time to formulate a wall of text; it takes some brain to do that. I just dislike people like Bucky who only see the negative side of things. Oh, and I usually don’t swear but Bucky kind of ticked me off so I had to do it… Much apologies if I seemed vulgar.

Frank said on Apr. 12, 2013

^Haha. It’s cool man. I feel you. Thank you too though. It’s really fine what you said about FF7 also. Many people feel this way, and I imagine if you aren’t a die-hard fan, it can be pretty annoying since the fan-base can borderline retarded with the amount of hostility sometimes. Not all of us our like this, but the few that are make the experience worse. I just really can’t stand name calling on forums over stupid things and every so often I’ll get someone who wants to look like an RPG fan by calling FF7 the best and insulting people’s intelligence, so our fanbase sometimes gets a bad rep, because of that occurence. Besides, FF6 was still pretty awesome.

Frank said on Apr. 12, 2013

^Looking back at my post, I felt like I didn’t really do a good job articulating what I mean. Essentially what I was trying to say is that some FF7 fans aren’t real fans. They just kind of jump on the bandwagon since it’s so popular. Going back to using rap as a metaphor, it’s like when people say they love Tupac, but have never even heard any of his songs. This is probably why sometimes it can look like everyone exaggerates on how good the game is. If anything, not only is what you said backed, but FF6 is relatively underrated.
