Tips for Buying EarthBound

April 17th, 2013 | EarthBound

Capture

Nintendo announced on its latest Nintendo Direct video that EarthBound is slated to be released sometime this year on the Nintendo Wii U Virtual Console in North America. It’s also going to be released in Europe.

The Nintendo Direct link is here. The EarthBound stuff starts at around 22 minutes in. Iwata states that passionate fan messages on the MOTHER 2 Miiverse was a reason for the decision to release the game outside of Japan too.

The Nintendo Twitter account also mentions this news here.

I’ll have more info as I can find it – thanks to everyone who’s sent me news/info!

A couple people have e-mailed me asking if there are going to be any changes to the game – I honestly don’t know. The Wii U version of MOTHER 2 had some slight changes (mostly things that reduce brightly flashing animations) but no content was changed. So we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully, since the Japanese version didn’t need content changes, this version won’t either.

I’m not sure where to get good deals on Wii Us, so if you know of any place that has a good sale or deal or anything, let me know! For now, here are some on Amazon and GameStop. Update: Apparently you can get Wii Us at Costco for $199 if you have a Costco membership. They don’t have it on their site so I can’t confirm, but that might be a good way to get one for cheap!

Here’s a look at just the EarthBound part of the Nintendo Direct video:

UPDATE Again: Itoi just tweeted with the following, which I’ve translated:

Please let your overseas friends know that MOTHER 2 (EarthBound)’s “revival” has been decided. There was an announcement that it’s going to be released this year.

I almost didn’t watch this direct because I was depressed at them ignoring all the great Wii U artwork you all have done. Can’t wait to make the sales go through the roof. If we can get more downloads than a zelda or mario game, we could possibly see Mother 1+3 too!

The day has finally come! The day many EB Fans have doubted would ever exist has finally made it!

I must admit, I always had a funny feeling that with the Wii U VC release of Mother 2 in Japan, I knew it would HAVE to end up in the U.S. (and yes, Europe).
For some odd reason, Nintendo really does seem to read into the Miiverse posts. Maybe because the Wii U isn’t doing that good right now?

I know certainly this will increase the Wii U sales TONS, which is quite ironic that 18 year old game that will probably be $8 on the VC would win more people over to the Wii U than most new $60 made for the system itself (except for maybe Mario, Zelda, or Super Smash Bros.)

PSIpunky said on Apr. 17, 2013

Holy… there are no words to describe the excitement this is causing.

Just when I thought the revival was not going to spread around the rest of the world.

Time for some ice cream and let the joy begin!

Earth Saturn said on Apr. 17, 2013

@Mato, you can look around at places like Walmart, Best Buy, Gamestop, maybe Target. Or if you wanna order it online, then maybe Amazon or eBay. That’s all I can think of right now.

nintendofreak said on Apr. 17, 2013

gamestop is a good place to get a wii u mato, get the zombiu bundle, you get like 430 worth of stuff for 390

rballest said on Apr. 17, 2013

@Mato. I don’t have one yet, but from what I’ve seen there really aren’t many deals to be had currently. Target has had some promotions where you can get Nintendo Land free with purchase of a basic Wii U, as well as some promotions in which they give a $30 or so Target gift card when you buy a Wii U. Not much from Best Buy or WalMart recently, so other than that you might need to look for good used deals through Amazon/Ebay/Gamestop etc.

Something crazy just crossed my mind:

You don’t think….. I mean they wouldn’t….

If there is any added content I will need life support.

Yorkshire Gold said on Apr. 17, 2013

One thing I don’t get is, if the enthusiastic overseas response to the Japanese release of Mother 2 on the Wii U was one of the main reasons they decided to re-release Earthbound, did they really manage to sort out all the copyright issues that have supposedly been holding them back for all these years in just a month or two?

I bet they’ve been working on bringing this over for a long time.

Anonymous said on Apr. 17, 2013

The point of Virtual Console is to preserve the games in their original form as much as possible so old players and new players alike can have relatively the same experience playing the game that they did/could have when it originally released. There won’t be any additional content.

Anonymous said on Apr. 17, 2013

that being said I am totally crapping myself over this

I never thought I’d actually be this excited if it happened

Mato said on Apr. 17, 2013

The MOTHER 2 release didn’t have extra content, so I don’t see why there’d be anything added to the EarthBound release.

This is such awesome news, finally! Also very cool to hear Iwata acknowledge the fans’ Miiverse messages had a role.

PSIpunky said on Apr. 17, 2013

Who knows what the reasons were, apart from the legal stuff or the poor sales the game had in it’s beginning. With that said, there weren’t many changes or revisions that were done on the japanese version. All I know is that Earthbound is coming now… and it feels like all fans from the world have defeated Giygas.

Does this mean Nintendo of Japan made the decision and not Nintendo of America? I don’t think I really understood who was behind the VC release in the first place.

It costs about the same to buy an SNES and Earthbound as it does a Wii U.

Maybe some day we’ll see MOTHER 3 on the Wii U!!!

Then, Iwata said “I have one more thing I want to talk about…Earthbound” My mouth hit the floor, and when he said that it was due to the massive fan movement, I was extremely proud. GG everyone, GG

Reficul said on Apr. 17, 2013

Considering I’d probably only be buying a WiiU for EarthBound, this would still take me $250 to $300 for a copy of the game. I doubt I’m going to throw down cash for a WiiU since I’m entirely uninterested in the console, but this is still really great news. Hopefully we’ll see the release of more Mother/EarthBound related stuff (and hopefully for the 3DS).

My crying was just so happy, I screamed, I laughed and I cried of happiness. I am happy this is going to be released because I want whole new generations learning from this game. Yes, the graphics might be simple but the underlying message is amazing and artistic. I have been a fan of Mother 2 for 7 years now and today is the biggest achievement we have had in the US and the UK. It is even larger in the UK, since most of them have to go to extreme measures to even play this game. This is nothing sort of simply amazing and astounding. Thank you Iwata, Itoi, and… even Reggie too, because this is what we have been wanting for a long time.

Well, I’m hoping that it’s good. I haven’t really liked a 2D Zelda since the Oracle games, though, so I’m not very optimistic about that.

G.Wicks said on Apr. 17, 2013

I’m happy that a weird little unpopular game from my childhood gained a ton of popularity and it going to be released again. It’s a weird feeling. We older, original release generation fans have been through quite a roller coaster ride in regards to this series… the release of the EB0 prototype and its disclaimer screen removal, the MOTHER on game boy color petition, the EB64 petiion until it was cancelled, Mother 1+2 and Mother 3 not being released in the states… its been quite a ride.

Now I’m not saying this is a contest, like “I’ve been here since the beginning in 1995 and anyone else who came later is a poseur”. The EarthBound community is made up of much more welcoming and friendly people than that, and I’m sincerely happy that younger people have been able to appreciate a game that feels way too 90’s to be appreciated by younger people. The clever writing, tone, spirit and heart of the game is clearly whats made it timeless and accessible to any generation. It’s really great. So please jnderstand that I’m not trying to be all “I have EB cred” because that’s immature. It’s just a game , so what? What I am saying is this: you fans who discovered EarthBound later, I just want you to know…. we’ve been through hell!!!!!

Mad props go to Tomato and Reidman and all the starmen.net staffers and cre who have stuck by this game since ‘the beginnig. It’s because of your passion that EarthBound has spread in popularity jnstead of fading into SNES oblivion like Troy Aikman’s Football.

Thanks πŸ™‚

Extreamly happy about this, and feel like this is a dream or something. I’m listening to “Because I Love You” while reading these comments, this is a hard thing to grasp. We’ve been waiting for this day to come for so long now, and it’s finally going to happen. Santas going to have to talk a lot of us about a WiiU and Eshop card this year πŸ™‚

Nintendo finally heard our cries, and are giving us what we wanted. April 17th should always be remembered. It may seem like a regular day to your average joe reading about this, but to us this is a huge deal and is something we’ve waited years for.

It would be great if Mother 1 and 3 got rereleased to, or if EB was on 3DS to. But I’m not getting any hopes up, and am just going to be happy about this for the moment.

PK Derp said on Apr. 17, 2013

@Moonside Remember it’s not just UK, it’s all of Europe and Australia aswell :/

I can’t believe it! I almost got a heart attack when i casually checked EBcentral and saw the update. Since im from Ireland, i never grew up with Earthbound even though i was a SNES kid. I’ve known about Mother since Smash Bros. but i didn’t play it until like 2007. It’s felt like ages for me, i can’t imagine how the fans who grew up with it must feel. I would like to thank Mato and all other fans for their sheer enthusiasm and support of such a great game. It’s you guys that brought it to Europe and everywhere else so i thank you. Im also honoured to be a member of such a great fanbase! πŸ˜€

I’m very happy to see this, but it’s also depressing it took this much time and effort from fans just to get a re-release of a game we have already played. I think they still could have done better and released the mother trilogy as a compilation on the eShop, and perhaps even begin development on a new Mother game. Itoi already gave his blessing for a new Mother game without him, and I believe Nintendo could find another talented company to take the helm of this wonderful series.

Amazing, I have been waiting for a re release since day one. I remember picking up the game a few days after release on the SNES. My first experiance with an RPG too! This game’s community has been through and done so so much, all with some much love for Itoi and his little series. We finally are getting it, I can’t believe it. I almost broke into tears when I heard the news. This is incredible guys, just incredible. Thanks to the fans for making it happen and thanks to Mayo for filling in the gaps of time with awesome translations. Words are failing me right now.

Well, i told my wife I had no plans on buying a WiiU since I already have a 3DSXL unless Earthbound came out on the Virtual Console. That was an easy 300 bucks from me,Nintendo. Did we have to pull teeth all these years?

Finally! I knew those miiverse posts would help. So glad to be able to buy it. Thanks, Nintendo!

CaptainCab said on Apr. 17, 2013

Just wanted to say that I definitely plan on rebuying the game even though I own the cart, any EB fan would be nuts not to want to spend 8-10 bucks to show their support. Plus having a digital copy of the game with Off-TV play, save states, resolution adjusted for HDTVs and no more worries about your battery needing to be replaced some day are great reasons to get this even if you already own the game, in my opinion. I actually beat the game for the first time about a week and a half ago but I’ll still be first in line to download the VC release. Maybe this time I’ll be more competent/patient and get some of the rarer items I missed (darn you, King of Swords and high IQ requirement for the Gaia Beam).

This is step 1 – step 2 is making sure that the EB community makes a huge splash and makes Nintendo a lot of money. Then we may get Mother 3, and if that is successful maybe Itoi will keep it going…

PsiioniicHero said on Apr. 17, 2013

After joining the revolution for EarthBoundian freedom, waiting in line for 12 hours for the Wii U launch, with a spot in the SNES section mocking me with EarthBound playing over and over, receiving a shock that Reggie was a jerk (he basically just left, didn’t say ‘hi’ to anyone in line, and I was pretty much towards the front too), and a long 18 year journey back to the states (13 for me being alive and a few months for me really getting into the series).

I would like to thank Iwata, Itoi, Mato, Chewy, all the people who helped at starmen.net and FanGamer, all the people who helped this series stay alive, and even Reggie (whom I will partially forgive, unless I find out that Iwata had to step on his toes to get this game out).

May the EarthBound fandom continue to spread and may it still be a fun, peaceful, dedicated fandom.

I’m speechless. I really have nothing I know to say right now because I couldn’t honestly believe they would ever make this happen. We finally were heard. We were acknowledged. It’s real.

I’m excited, not just for the opportunity to own this for myself, but to share with others and to join in with people who are experiencing Earthbound for the first time. I don’t usually get into the social stuff, but I can’t wait to just read through the Miiverse posts and see what made people laugh, what made people cry, what made people feel something.

Tomato, congratulations. You did the impossible. You changed Nintendo’s mind. I know you’ll be modest, say no no, it was everyone who posted, tweeted, contributed, etc. That’s partly true, but it never would have come together without your love and passion for Earthbound. Almost 14 years at this from the first petition to today, but the quest has finally paid off. I think I speak for everyone here when I say I would like to offer you a beer and a hug.

Marcus, I’m so excited for you. People will get to experience Earthbound without being pushed away by huge price tags and poor marketing. People will be able to connect with your game in a way they never could before; just the player, the game, and the experience. If you’re willing, I hope you’ll give us the chance to share in your experience as your work and vision get a second chance to be appreciated without all the noise and distraction. I hope it’s everything and more than you hoped for.

The Great Morgil said on Apr. 17, 2013

I think even more surprising then the fact that we’re getting it is the fact that they made such a big deal out of it in the Nintendo Direct video. They spent a good 1 1/2 to 2 minutes showcasing it when they could have just lumped it into that montage of other VC games. That shows just how much they realize the game means to so many people, and that makes me feel happy.

Btw Mato, if you do get a US Wii U, the white one will only have 8 GBs of storage and with the OS and all of the other stuff, you will only have 3 Gbs to download games so you may need an external hard drive for that but if you get black, you will have 25 GBs so Earthbound will be fine.

This is so, so, so amazing. I’ve been absolutely gooey with joy over this announcement! Ever since I played Earthbound last year one dark school night, I’ve been in love with the game ever since! After looking at the fandom dying away miserably after years of begging and losing hope, -BANG- ! Wish granted, EARTHBOUND FOR EVERYONE! (With a Wii-U that is…)

It’s a shame the Wii-U has been met with poor reception as of late, a lot of people haven’t been buying it, and that might not bode well for Earthbound’s sales when the mass-majority can’t buy it, or even care to…

Looks like it’s up to us, the fandom, to prove our worth and buy the HELL out of this game. Buy your friends Wii-U’s with Earthbound, buy your family Wii-U’s with Earthbound, buy your neighbors Wii-U’s with Earthbound, BUY YOUR PETS WII-U’S WITH EARTHBOUND! THE FANDOM IS BACK BABY, AND WE’RE GONNA SHOW THOSE FATCATS UP IN KYOTO, JAPAN THAT THEY’RE DIGGING INTO A TREASURE TROVE WITH EARTHBOUND! SHOW EM’ YOUR BUCKS, AND WE’LL GET MOTHER 3 LOCALIZED! Now, Nintendo, about MOTHER 3…

2Sang said on Apr. 29, 2013

It is now our mission to make sure this is the #1 download title. If we can get it past Super Mario Bros. or LOZ I think we’ll have a shot at more than just 1 eshop title, although I am more than grateful for it.

GREAT, now I can pay 5-8 dollars just to play the EARTHBOUND ROM ON MY WII U. Where the hell is Mother 3, and Earthbound 0?

PKLucas0 said on May. 12, 2013

I agree with 2Sang. If we let Nintendo know that Earthbound is great in places not in Japan then they might consider Mother 1 (Earthbound Zero) and Mother 3 (Earthbound 2)

I hope MOTHER gets a chance soon…

Finally! Omg, I’m so happy! Definitely getting a Wii U now :3

Well, I guess this is all the more reason to get a Wii U now! This is honestly the best news I’ve received all year.

I disagree with a lot of you. Infact, I don’t think we should buy this at all.

Its insulting. They could release it for the Wii virtual console. Why won’t they? To drive up the sales of their Wii-U and no other reason.

I so very much want to play Earthbound on a real console again. But I will NOT stand for this sort of behavior. It really hurts me to have to do it but I cannot in good conscience support such a ridiculous, selfish move.

Now, if they were to say… Release it on the wii-u, and then six months later on the Wii, I might be tempted to buy a Wii-U to encourage them. But without such a promise…

No. No I can’t support it. We should not support it. I thought more here would be in agreement with me, and I’m immensely dissapointed that so many are willing to reward this atrocious behavior.

People like you make me cringe. It’s on the wii U as that system’s VC is fresh and NEW, but just because they aren’t putting it on a dead system you whine? I swear, this is why I sometimes wish I could be reggie for a day and say “You guys NEVER get satisfied.”

Douche Mcallister said on May. 30, 2013

So does this mean were gonna have to wait another million years to get another MOTHER game on VC?….
God, I’m gonna be 90 and going, “yay!!! They released MOTHER 1 on virtual console!” And then before I can even down load it ill crap my adult diaper and die.
