The other day Marcotto sent me this e-mail:
Hey Tomato,
Marcotto from Starmen.net here.
I was reading the latest Batman Incorporated issue, when I saw a quite familiar kid…
I’m not sure if this is a reference or not, but the bat and the fashion choice, leads to that.
Lemme know if it’s decent/legit.
Keep EBC strong Mato!
The image in question is here:
Honestly, I don’t know much about this sort of thing… What do you guys think? Is it common for comic artists to put secret cameos into their stuff? I know it’s not unheard of (here’s the Angry Video Game Nerd and Nostalgia Critic making a cameo in an anime, for example), but I would’ve thought DC Comics would have a thing against that. I dunno, let me know in the comments!

Probably is a tribute to Mother saga. It’s not unusual this kind of things in comic-books.
Yeah, I feel like this was probably an intentional wink at the title “Boy Wonder” by the artist.
maybe a stretch.. but could that be paula, further in the background?
The most obscure thing I remember offhand is Gurren Lagann in Green Lantern. I don’t read comics though. Just consider earthbound’s cultiness. It really looks intentional to me.
Well, this kid can’t be Ness because this particular kid is getting owned by Robin. Everyone knows Ness could kick Robin’s butt because Robin is TOTALLY LAME.

I don’t actively read comics, so I don’t know if cameo’s are normal, but it’d be pretty sweet if that WAS Ness
*coughrobinisawesomecough*
That guy under Robin has some familiar glasses… and jacket… Too much of a stretch probably.
Wasn’t Ness meant to look somewhat stereotypical of an average kid anyway? I see black-haired kids with striped shirts in advertisements and such anyway. And “Probably a reference to Mother Saga,” I highly doubt it. A reference to a video game is one things, a reference to some crappy little web series BASED on a game is another.

It was called Zettai Karen Children.
I think its intentional, largely because they also included a girl with a pink dress and considering how the lighting works here, possibly blond hair. And also there’s that man with the glasses and blond hair and a green jacket. And they’re all in the same image.
But where’s Poo…?

Poo is the Winston Zeddemore of EarthBound.
Wow. Well this is certainly something. I looked up which issue this was and it’s #8.
As for that anime cameo of AVGN and Nostigalia Critic. Wow, I didn’t even know about that.
I’m not surprised if this truly IS a cameo.
What I AM surprised however is seeing internet stars in an anime.
u where gonna find a kid in a dc commic with yellow and blue stripes and a base ball bat eventualy , thats like saying “omg he a magician he guessed that theres money in mah wallet hurr durr”

Psh, Ness could stomp that kid in no time flat.
I don’t see it. The only thing that makes it look like Ness is A kid with A (light)blue and yellow tripped shit. Infact it looks more like Claus’s shirt.
If that blue on the shirt was darker and the sleeves were shorter I might see it. but right now it’s obviouslt just A (poor) coincidence. :/
I see Joshua from The World Ends With You (middle), and Clementine from
The Walking Dead (bottom right)

The man underneath Robin is Commissioner Gordon, definitely not intended to be a Jeff reference. But the Ness? …maybe.
Definitely very loosely based. I’d bet the sword of kings that the artist is familiar with Ness.
They would’ve went a lot more obvious if they intended that. There’s no way that’s supposed to be Ness.
@Halloween: Hey, I got one of those! I dunno about you, but it took me a long time to get mine. I wouldn’t bet it on just anything. It makes Poo kill aliens dead like throwing salt at snails eyes. salt in regular eyes is bad. Salt in snail eyes is… eye-melting.
I GOT LOGGED OUT AGAIN, WHY YOU HATE ME SO MUCH WORDPRESS

I fixed it. :B
While I’m at it, I was wondering about if it was a Ness reference, but then I saw the girl. She’s holding some kind of a stick. It’s no frying pan, but I have no clue what else it could be if not a weapon of some sort. xD Although, I played with random sticks as a kid, so… But then also, I wasn’t a little girl. Hmm.

I wouldn’t put it past them. After all, they put a Simpsons Movie reference in a Green Lantern comic. Why not EB, too?
That girl in the pink dress looks kind of like the Paula from FoB, as well. XD
Definite coincidence.

Then again, wasn’t Ness’ design made to represent the stereotypical American kid?
