It only took 3 hours, but I got it on my first play through. I never tried to get on any additional playthroughs though.

Ness17 said on Jun. 11, 2012

I got it on my first play through without knowing.

TheBigL said on Jun. 11, 2012

I’m usually quite lucky when it comes to the sword, on most playthroughs i get it in about 5-10 battles.
Too bad thats pretty much the only luck i get in earthbound

OctoG123 said on Jun. 11, 2012

The issue I have is win you reach to Lv 99 trying to get the sword of kings is that win you go to Magicant a little later and beat Ness’s Nightmare and get all those crazy stat upgrades is that you won’t be able to get those stat upgrades for ness because you are already level 99 and you have to level up to get those stat upgrades and then you are sad 🙁

Radiostorm said on Jun. 11, 2012

@OctoG123

That happened to me the first time I tried to get the Sword of Kings. -___-

Poe said on Jun. 11, 2012

Octo – just restart the game after so many levels gained while going after the sword of kings. Then you’ll never get too high! 🙂

Mr.Fobby said on Jun. 11, 2012

my brother did

resetsurvivor said on Jun. 11, 2012

@Poe: I always get too high when I try to get the sword of kings. 😛 …but seriously folks. My buddy acquired it but he used an emulator/save states and I told him that was cheating.

Bucky said on Jun. 11, 2012

I never tried. I have yet to play Earthbound without cheating, though, as I suck at video games.

Darien said on Jun. 11, 2012

When I was younger, I was an obsessive completionist, and I got the Sword of Kings on every playthrough. The only thing that prevented me from doing the same with the Gutsy Bat is that the player’s guide says it comes from Bionic Krakens — so good thing those don’t respawn, or I’d probably STILL be there farming them for it. 😉

Johnwalt said on Jun. 11, 2012

My first playthrough, I got it the first battle without even knowing what it was. Then I saw it in the guide of being a rare item and was like WOOO! Then I left to go do something and I come back to find that my mom had turned off the game (I was still in that area) So I had to start over and I got lucky and got it the first battle again… Lol. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get it again since :c

September said on Jun. 11, 2012

I didn’t know how to get it during my first playthrough – but when I played through it my second time, I got it after beating nearly 200 Starman Super-dudes. Luck is never on my side, so it’s always a hassle trying to get it for me…

Anonymous said on Jun. 11, 2012

I got it on one of the first few times I battled the starman super, but I never got it again afterwards throughout my other playthroughs. I was really lucky that day as I didn’t attempt to get it, but I don’t really care about it anyways.

Puck Your Mother said on Jun. 11, 2012

It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just that I haven’t played Earthbound in years, and at the time I didn’t know about it. So my chances of getting one now are slim (Like if they never were anyway)

Stuffgamer1 said on Jun. 11, 2012

@Darien: The guide is incorrect as to where the Bionic Krakens are, though. They actually DO respawn, and they only appear in one small area in the Cave of the Past. Check here for proof: http://starmen.net/mother2/ebdb/enemies.php?enemy=49

I’ve gotten the Sword of Kings more than once, I think. On my most recent save file, I also obtained the Gaia Beam for Jeff (from farming for the Broken Antenna off of the Uncontrollable Sphere in Lumine Hall…came surprisingly fast!). I was working on grinding my way to a Gutsy Bat, but got distracted and never finished. Pretty sure that save is still on the cart, though…

Amy said on Jun. 11, 2012

The first time I played Earthbound, I got the Sword of Kings after only twenty-ish battles while my sister, who was simultaneously playing it alongside me, got it after roughly two hours. Needless to say she was angry that I got so lucky, until we started trying to get the other rare items and she ended up getting every single one before me. I still don’t even have the star pendant even after probably twelve hours of battling at double the speed. I’ve long since given up on that. :/

PLikey said on Jun. 11, 2012

I get it every time I play, it helps sort of get levelled up at that point in the game as well as raise Poo’s offence. I usually get it after 40-60 battles.

kallman1206 said on Jun. 11, 2012

I got it once. The next time I gained something like ten levels from the starmen, keeping my HP up with the PP I got from defeating them, before eventually giving up & just having Poo be another Feeze specialist 😛

Steenbit said on Jun. 11, 2012

I’ve played through the game like eight times in the past three years since I’ve discovered it, and I have never once gotten the Sword of Kings. But I introduced my friend to EarthBound, and he got it on his first playthrough. What a jerk.

Anonymous said on Jun. 11, 2012

It’s the only 1/128 item I’ve ever gotten. I feel obligated because it’s Poo’s only weapon.

The longest it has taken me to get it was 5 hours. Incidentally, during that playthrough I ended up getting a second sword while on my way to the boss. I laughed so hard.

I played through Earthbound again last week. Only took me 30 minutes that time. I was pleasantly surprised.

When I first played EarthBound on ZSNES a few years ago, I got it randomly and had no clue what it was. I was just running around battling. I saw that Poo could equip it and gave it to him. It wasn’t until a few years later when I was frequenting an EarthBound site (it may have been Starmen.net, I can’t remember) that I found out how rare it was and that, apparently, some people who’ve been playing the game since release haven’t even found it. I then felt extremely fortunate.

Nesskid said on Jun. 11, 2012

There needs to be 2 more options on this poll.

1. I got it but in a fit of excitement threw my hands in the air thus pulling the SNES off the entertainment center and onto the ground.

2. I got it but was on my way back to Andonut’s lab to save, during a thunderstorm, and the power went out.

Anonymous said on Jun. 11, 2012

I got it on my first Starman Super during my second playthrough of the game.

Earthbounder said on Jun. 11, 2012

It usually takes me a while to get it. I think the highest level was 87 with ness when I got it. It takes forever to say the least. I never get any other 1/128 items though.

Barbaloot said on Jun. 11, 2012

I actually got it once before I ever even knew I could get it. Second playthrough, I think. So I didn’t actually TRY to get it, but got it anyway.

357 said on Jun. 11, 2012

I got it on my around 20th try but my friend got it around his 5th try

Tomoyuki said on Jun. 11, 2012

I got it on my 2nd or 3rd super starmen. Back then I didn’t even know it was important thought.

Youkai said on Jun. 11, 2012

I never finish the Stonehenge Base without first getting the Sword of Kings. I just use Jeff’s Spy command to get it so I don’t gain too many levels.

Jondo said on Jun. 11, 2012

On my second playthrough, I got it after about 4 hours of grinding on Starmen Supers.
I kept on grinding so I could get to Lvl 75 (Rockin Ω), and 15 minutes later, another one was dropped.

I actually got it on my latest playthrough without even trying. Guess I had brutal luck with it. 😀

TheDreaminghawk said on Jun. 11, 2012

I tried, but after 4 hours i gave up. My party gained about 30 levels that day, and I don’t want that happening again.

Speaking of Kings…

Sergio said on Jun. 11, 2012

I remember when I completed my first playthrough a few years back, my friend who introduced me to the series kept urging me to be prpared to ‘grind for hours’ on the Starmen(ghost of starman?) enemies to get Poo’s Sword of Kings…I watched him weep in rage as I picked it up on my first encounter!

JeffMan said on Jun. 12, 2012

I got the sword of kings this one time

Kuranes said on Jun. 12, 2012

I get all the droppable equips every time I play. I also got it first try last time I played.

SSBMaster11 said on Jun. 12, 2012

Not Sword of Kings, but I have gotten a couple other 1/128 items (by accident, I never intentionally try for them). I have gotagile Magic Fry Pan from a Chomposaur, and a Pizza from a Skate Punk.

If there was any 1/128 item I cared about, it would be the Gutsy Bat, but it’s just too close to the end of the game to matter to me.

BusterTheFox said on Jun. 12, 2012

Dude! I just finished my second playthrough today and today was actually the first day I’ve ever tried anything like this in EB. At first, I got a Brain Food Lunch from a regular Starman, which is another 1/128 item… I got all excited, then I was like, “WHAT THE…!? WHY!? HOW!?” Then I checked the walkthrough. Oh, well. It didn’t take me very long, though. It was easy because I did all of the EXP and Rock Candy stuff in Scaraba, so I was majorly over-leveled. After Magicant, Ness got to over 1,000 HP… Such a long comment, with so much more to tell…

16bitKaiju said on Jun. 12, 2012

I didn’t bother getting it on my two play-throughs of the game but now that I’m playing it again I might at least try to get it.

Deraj626 said on Jun. 12, 2012

I’ve gotten it on every playthrough. 😀 The only 1/128 item I actually care about though.

DDDKirby said on Jun. 12, 2012

…I only got the pizza from skate punk and a bomb from Attact Slug-_-I got this two things when I first beat these two enemies…Well,I’m lazy so I don’t want to get the Sword of Kings at all…

KingOfSwords said on Jun. 12, 2012

I spent hours grinding for it and never got it. And since I spent hours grinding for it Ness was Level 97 after beating Ness’s Nightmare.

And yes I did name my account after the Sword of Kings. Shut up.

Wumbonator said on Jun. 12, 2012

Never got it in my first playthrough because that was completely blind. I’m in my second right now an I’ve been trying to get it off-and-on for the past couple of months, and about 4 or so hours have been put into it. Ness is already around level 83 or so and everyone else is around level 70. I’m beginning to think that maybe I should just stop trying at this point.

cherryw17 said on Jun. 12, 2012

I Never knew about it tell know mebey I’ll get it in the gba version when the fan trans that zunar radic and me are working on

doc said on Jun. 12, 2012

The first time I tried I got it in only 14 starmen supers. it was pretty great.

Radic said on Jun. 12, 2012

I never really understood why everyone is so bent over on getting the sword
Of kings. I mean there are other 1/128 (or so) drop items. For other people too. I understand it is Poo’s only weapon, but why does the SoK get more attention?

sticktendo said on Jun. 12, 2012

The first time I played EarthBound and got to the Stonehenge base, I got the Sword on the FIRST Starman Super. It was awesome. Then I got a second 2 Starman Supers later. I was flipping the fuck out, imaginably.

Robo85 said on Jun. 12, 2012

The kleptomaniac in me makes sure I get it every time I play. EVERY TIME

Cranberry Tofu said on Jun. 13, 2012

Every time I play through the game, a sense of dread starts building in me when I reach the Tenda village, because soon I’ll be spending hours trying to get the sword. And I have to get it on every playthrough.

I think the Sword of Kings is the most popular 1/128 item because: (1) as previously mentioned, it’s Poo’s only weapon, and (2) it’s a SWORD. The only one in the game.

t-bone said on Jun. 13, 2012

I didn’t even know about it! Dang…

Jon said on Jun. 13, 2012

I played through EarthBound twice.
The first time playing through, I got it within 20 minutes and was around level 70 when I got it.
The second time took me an hour-and-a-half and I was around level 80.
I feel fortunate.

Freezair said on Jun. 13, 2012

My first playthrough in the game was completely blind, because I played it on an emulator, purely because Smash Bros. made me curious, and didn’t even know the guide was a thing. I got the sword completely unawares, on a normal trip through the area, and was simply glad that that “Weapon: (none)” spot on Poo was finally getting filled in. I figured he’d get more weapons later. It wasn’t until much later, when I started going to the fansites and such, that I realized how lucky I’d been!

I usually have terrible luck with rare drops in RPGs, too.

Starmyster04 said on Jun. 14, 2012

On my first play through of Earthbound, I hunted for the sword of kings for hours, until i finally got it. I was so excited and i remember saying to myself, “All that work has finally paid off. I would laugh so hard if i got it again next battle!” after saying that and not wanting to jynx myself i avoided most battles. until i engaged in a fight literally half a minute later. And waddaya know. I got a second sword of kings. i wasnt laughing at that point, but instead moaning in sorrow. after that play through (i got all the 1/128 equipable items including 3 star pendants, and became too overleveled to die in a battle just from the sword of kings hunt) i have never hunted for any items ever again. It takes so much away from the game and is not worth the satisfaction, especially on a first play through. Oh, and i also did the rock candy glitch so much that my characters’ health digits turned into text from the game.

Joshua Johnson said on Jun. 14, 2012

Never gotten it. My first playthrough I attempted it, then got bored because I wanted to continue with the game. Poo is still a perfectly good character without the sword.

Bob Vila said on Jun. 15, 2012

I attempted to get this sword so many times for hours and hours on end, never could do it. I think this was the only item in the game I could not get.

ethics said on Jun. 16, 2012

I remember the first time I got the sword, farming for a day and then some. It was like 4 in the morning, my party was in the high 80s, it dropped… and as I pulled up on the controller in excitement, it caused the SNES to reset as it clanged to the ground.

My eyes bulged, and then I heard yelling from my father to goto bed. I came back to the game a week later, and was able to obtain the sword more easily… never again.

RedDekuScrub said on Jun. 16, 2012

I got it the first time I played through the game. I wanted to get all of Poo’s equipment so I killed Starmen for about an hour. I used the Casey Bat and back attacked them on the field to kill them instantly. My party grew like 20 levels, but I didn’t max it out so I could still get the Uber Level Up for Ness at the end.

Opinionated said on Jun. 17, 2012

One day, I hacked an EarthBound ROM so that the Starmen Super would drop the Sword of kings more often.

When I played through the Stonehenge base, I started to realize why it was a 1/128 “drop”…

steve said on Jun. 20, 2012

I have gotten it a couple times, a few years back i was replaying it and i was trying to see how fast i can run through it on an emulator, it took me 9 hoursish and the longest time i spent doing anything was getting that sword. then i played on my actual cartridge i went 10 battles in and got it. i was so upset.

L. Raptor- Rocker of the Dead said on Jun. 22, 2012

Got it on my first play through in the 28th battle, and the second time I had a friend tally how many Starmen supers it took to get the sword…4 1/2 hours and over 500 Starmen later… Ness Lv. 91, Paula Lv. 86, Jeff Lv. 83, and Poo Lv. 76! Needless to say even without the sword I beat the rest of the game easly! Lol

KA_Gamer said on Jun. 26, 2012

Just did a playthrough and got it on my third try. I’m pretty proud, but I was secretly wishing for some levels.

KA_Gamer said on Jun. 26, 2012

I should clarify that in my above comment I mean I only fought 3 Starman Super and got the sword on the third Starman Super.
@steve
It doesn’t make a difference whether you’re emulating or playing the real game unless you’re modifying the ROM. What happened there is just a matter of chance.

Marble Hippies said on Jul. 9, 2012

I hunt it down. Doesn’t matter if it takes hours or days, I get that sword.

AwelCruiz said on Mar. 23, 2013

Once, many years ago without even trying, I managed to find the Sword of Kings. Never again.

I was trying earlier today. On three occasions I was in a fight with a Starman Super and Atomic Power Robot and got a present afterwards. Imagine how exited I get when I see “The enemy left you a present”, only to see it followed by “Inside the present was a Super bomb.” 🙁

AwelCruiz said on Mar. 25, 2013

I found it last night after a long grinding session. For only the second time in my life. Ness is currently at level 77 and I still haven’t started Lumine Hall.
