Tips for Buying EarthBound

April 16th, 2012 | EarthBound, Hacking

About five years ago, after I first started my now-halted EarthBound Zero remake hack, I wound up modifying some of my tools to dump all the text out of EarthBound for easy-viewing. I then went on to try to turn it into a tool to let people translate the game.

Although none of the above turned out so well (and I’ve since abandoned the translation tool, so please don’t use it, it’s very buggy!) at least we managed to get a script dump of EarthBound out of it all. You can check out the script here:

You might be wondering what’s so tough about dumping EarthBound’s script or why there’s all that technical stuff in the text file – this explains the reason for that.

I do know there are a number of lines missing from the file above, like the text Dr. Andonuts says after you step into the Sky Runner, possibly more. This is because of wacky programming in EarthBound.

So there you go! Now you can reference stuff from the game easily!

In a future update I’ll probably post all the files and source code I used for my EarthBound Zero remake hack. I bet Mr. Accident’s CCScript tool blows most of my tools out of the water, though 😛

I don’t know why, but I still get a warm fuzzy feeling inside when I read about your translation tools, Tomato. And I mean that in a very sincere, good way.

When I first found the tools you had made, back in 2007 or 2008 or something, I was inspired to start a simple Earthbound translation for fun. That project quickly grew into something much larger than that, and now I have a group that is pretty dedicated to seeing all the Mother titles translated into Brazilian Portuguese. We have already launched our Mother 1 translation, we’re really, really close to launching our Mother 3 translation (just a few more graphics to hack in and a couple bugs to squash), and Earthbound will happen shortly after that.

So, the work you did, at the very least, inspired a pretty solid set of translations that likely would have never happened otherwise.

I’ve always wondered, too, if I could get the source to the translation stuff you did… hehe

Also, as a side note, part of the issues that occurred with the translation tools and the script dump is that the dump seems to be missing some lines. Since we all decided to leave the EB translation tools behind us, I don’t know if it ever came up, but at the time I had started compiling a list of lines from the game that did not appear in the script. They seem to be linked to when players step on a trigger to flag an event.

Partial list I made is here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8482/SomeMissingLines.txt

Cool, thanks! I don’t have any plans for any more EarthBound projects, but if I do write a script dumper in the future I’ll be sure to use that info 😀

These have been on Starmen.net for a while, haven’t they? I’ve had more than one occasion to look up some dialogue or name from Earthbound and have found them very helpful, so thanks!

Yeah, I think I posted them there a couple years ago, they’re tucked into some obscure page I think.
