Tips for Buying EarthBound

November 13th, 2011 | Auctions

It’s been a loooong time since I last did a swag watch update, so here are a couple interesting things I’ve noticed recently!

A gigantic pile of video games, including EarthBound

Looks like this guy is selling a huge chunk of his gaming collection – it’s a ton of stuff 😯 I’m wondering if it’ll actually sell though, it seems to be in a pretty hefty price range.

Official MOTHER 1 Novel + obi

The MOTHER 1 novel appears from time to time, but they’re usually kind of beat up. This one comes with one of those neat decorative obis that Japanese books tend to have. I don’t see this very often (in fact my own MOTHER 1 novel copy doesn’t even have one) so if you’re a collector this might be worth snagging.

Mr. Saturn Art Book w/ Mr. Saturn Plush

These are always tough to find, and even tougher to find a full set like this – some sellers like to sell it all separately to get the most money out of ’em. I really wish I had picked up one of these back in the day, then I could’ve really appreciated the Mr. Saturn plush, as it was the first and only Mr. Saturn plush at the time. It’s still much rarer than most of the other Mr. Saturn stuff out there now, though.

Actually, I was just wondering – does ANYONE here have one of these art books? I just realized I’m not sure I know anyone who actually owns it!

EarthBound Cartridge + Guide + Scratch-n-Sniff EarthBound Ad!

One of the neat things about EarthBound was how the game was promoted. It didn’t really hit its mark (for various reasons fans debate about), but it was cool and most of the print ads involved scratch-n-sniff stuff. This particular auction includes one of those print ads, and I bet it still smells a little bit, even after all these years. I mostly recall a picture of a thick piece of pizza smelling like pizza spices or something, but I know there were other smells.

Giant Mr. Saturn Plush

The Giant Mr. Saturn plushes were really rare to begin with, now they’re extremely hard to come across. This particular one I saw relist a few days ago. I think this one still hasn’t sold yet because of the crazy price, but you can probably afford it if you sell a kidney or two 😛

Yahoo! Auctions Japan Stuff

YAJ always has cool merch, here’s some stuff I came across that you’d have a tough time finding on eBay:

Anyway, that’s all for now. I’ve been kinda falling behind keeping up with EarthBound/MOTHER stuff on the eBays and Yahoo Japans, so if you come across something cool, let me know!

I’ve got a 1+2 art book. I was gonna scan it months ago but I’ve been scanning lots of other things instead. 😉 There’s writing in there that I was curious about seeing translated, IIRC.

A NOVEL about EarthBound?? What is it about, farts?!

And who’s that big nosed critter? Is he some kinda… uh… guy who stinks?!

I’ve never played this game but I’m not about to pay hundreds of dollars to have my olfactory senses offended!!
Some people are crazy…

I’m still waiting for more Mitch comics. 😉

Mato said on Nov. 13, 2011

Satsy: Did you get it with the plush too?

Kraig said on Nov. 13, 2011

That first game lot is like a dream come true but 2500$ is just too much to spend.

Matteomax said on Nov. 13, 2011

Now, if only the game lot included a boxed EarthbBound, and Stadium Events, which people know as the most valuable game of all time.

The other day I was at a thrift store looking through stuff and i found a nintendo power magazine that had that scratch and sniff ad in it im keeping it in mah top dresser drawer… How much cash do you think teh thing would be worth? its a bit beat up but its pretty good quality it even still smells… all my friends think that its awesome…

Poe said on Nov. 13, 2011

The scratch n sniff ad mailed out by NP is around $34 on ebay: http://gameswag.com/view/earthbound-scratch-n-sniff-ad/

Not sure if that’s the same as the one you found, dwiese.

Satsy said on Nov. 13, 2011

Mato: Yup. The lil’ guy is currently sat next to my first-run Banpresto Mr.Saturn along with a few other toys. The whole shebang at $90, a few years back.

Mato said on Nov. 13, 2011

Dang, that’s an incredible deal 😯

MarioFan3 said on Nov. 13, 2011

Whoa… That is quite the collection up there… $2,500 for all of it actually isn’t much when there’s… I dunno how many there, that’s an amazing collection (I’m so jealous, wishing I had the money) My main question is: WHY WOULD ANYONE SELL THAT??? There’s bound to be at least over a hundred games there…

Nice to see some plush Saturns and those novels too (I just can’t read Japanese, hmm)

Patrick said on Nov. 13, 2011

I imagine someone is either strapped for cash, or they want cash because they can play all those games on their computer now (Via Emulators). I wouldn’t give up a copy of Earthbound for any price, but it happens.

Jason said on Nov. 13, 2011

There are a lot of good games in there. It’s a great deal if you have $2,500 laying around and you want to start… and finish your old school game collection.

It’s sad someone’s selling it though. I’m feeling nostalgic just looking at the pictures.

It’s too bad the guy isn’t selling the games and systems individually. I’d love to get my hands on some games for our old NES system. If the price is reasonable I would also buy the SNES with the copy of Earthbound.

I wouldn’t mind getting a few Mr.Saturn plushes. Since official ones tend to be hard to find, I’d probably buy one from an artist who makes them.

Zeph101 said on Nov. 14, 2011

I’ve been considering selling some of my snes collection too (but not Earthbound and a couple other all time rarities/favorites). I recently purchased RetroZone’s Super NES flashcart. The only games it can’t play are the one’s with chips like Starfox and Mario RPG. Even so, I highly recommend getting one.

@Satsy: is the artbook worth getting at such a hefty price? I’ve been thinking about it each time I see it up for sale but have never really gone for it.

Zeph101 said on Nov. 14, 2011

BTW, just did a quick ebay search and noticed this was for sale:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FAMICOM-NES-MOTHER-GUIDE-BOOK-EARTHBOUND-ZERO-ART-JAPAN-/140640435882?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20bed2beaa

At 64 pages though, it pales in comparrison to the Earthbound guide. Would love to see it translated just to see if the same attempts at humor were made though.

Satsy said on Nov. 14, 2011

Zeph101: That could depend on whether or not you’re a collector. The art within to some scale can be found on the internet already, and the Mr.Saturn, while neat, isn’t as awesome as the Banpresto versions. If you want it for the sake of a collection, make sure that’s money you’ve very much got spare, since it’s only gotten more expensive than when I got it, looking at the current price.

Otherwise I’ll probably get round to scanning the book eventually. But first things first, still got manga~

What about that Mother 3 promo mouse pad on yahoo japan auctions that was given out at mother 3 launch party?

TokyoPC said on Nov. 14, 2011

Actually I can’t find the link for the mother 3 mouse pad, i did find the vhs mother 2 promo tape on ebay but you didn’t mention that here.

if anyone finds the link to the mother 3 mouse pad please share? i don’t know if it’s still on yahoo japan auctions anymore.

Bionic said on Nov. 14, 2011

I got the second to last giant Mr. Saturn on eBay…he looks so cute sitting on top of the Escargo Express box. I wonder if someone will actually pay $900 for the other one!?

DC16 said on Nov. 14, 2011

If I had the money for that 2.5k collection, I’d snatch it up, considering it’s about $8 a game with free shipping.

pk_stan said on Nov. 15, 2011

I just got outbid yesterday on one of those art books. It sold for only 5500 yen! I bid up to 5400… I shouldn’t have been so cheap! >_<

protoss said on Nov. 15, 2011

lol pk_stan the reason why you were outbid by exactly 100 yen is because the guy sniped you, if you would have went higher he might have been willing to go to 8000 yen lol you never know.

and yeah i might remember seeing that mother 3 dev party giveaway pad thing on yja i think it was sold or taken down early ;_;

The Earthbounder said on Nov. 16, 2011

dwiese1998 said on Nov. 17, 2011
