It’s never gonna die now.

Churly said on Nov. 10, 2011

It won’t die because people (outside the EB community) LIKE it.

Oh boy…

EnnuiKing said on Nov. 10, 2011

I wonder how the Japanese MOTHER community and the developers of the games feel about the Fetus theory.

…Tomato, send an email to Apollo-san right away!

I thought the list was really great overall, particularly the inclusion of Phanto, which is what first came to mind when I heard the phrase “scariest retro game enemy.” I remain astounded to this day at how terrifying a dumb flying mask can be in a silly cartoonish game like that.

when i was 4, i played earthbound and beat it.
giygas never scared me as much as poo’s mu training guy that breaks all your body parts off…

ness-kun said on Nov. 10, 2011

the fetus theory is so stupid. IF people understood EB’s time travel they’d understand tha the Giygas in the Cave of the Past is the adult one, post m1,and not it’s fetal form. He just made his base in the past because he probably thought it’d be safer

Miche said on Nov. 10, 2011

I’ve also never cared for the fetus theory. Giygas traveled into the past along with Porky/Pokey, and Porky/Pokey didn’t decrease in age as he traveled back in time; also, unless his/her/its species’ young remain in the womb for millions and millions of years (assuming that they even have wombs to begin with), Giegue was born in the early 1900’s, roughly around the same time that George and Maria were abducted. It just doesn’t add up.

DD said on Nov. 10, 2011

Oh man. I remember always freaking out because of those Phantos. That angry sun in some desert level also was scary. You think it’s just a background sprite until it attacks you.

About that Giygas theory. Yeah, I have to agree that it falls apart. Giygas is an adult traveling back in time, so it doesn’t make sense.

ness-kun said on Nov. 10, 2011

Also, itoi stated that the entire aspect of Giygas is based on the twisted, squished boob of the girl in ”the military policeman and the dismembered beauty”

Ice Sage said on Nov. 10, 2011

That theory needs to be retired. The commentary was actually kind of deterring during the Giygas section…the whole mirror thing was unnecessary.

If anything, just a brief mention of why Giygas looks and acts the way he does would have been a better idea. The truth is more disturbing than the fetus theory anyway.

RadicOmega said on Nov. 10, 2011

@Ice Sage, This theroy is old, true and annoying. And is true. THe theroy is old and people are just adding on to it and talking MORE trash on MOTHER. People even think That the name MOTHER was based on that scene. Well if you know how to read Japenese and read certain articles and just have good prior knowledge, you’d know that the name MOTHER was a song by the amazing Beatles.

I think the Screw Attack guy needs to look up “scary” in the dictionary.

Zoom! said on Nov. 10, 2011

First Cracked.com now this, I swear the big mac theory just won’t die.

FlyingManCourage said on Nov. 10, 2011

I saw this no too long ago. I was actually quite surprised. Don’t get me wrong, I love to see anything EarthBound getting a #1 spot on a video game list…but I didn’t think Giygas was at all scary.

Dude said on Nov. 11, 2011

@RadicOmega: Uh, actually “Mother” is a John Lennon solo track. It did come out the same year that the Beatles split, so perhaps he wrote it while they were still active (so to speak…). I wouldn’t know, I’m not totally immersed in Beatles knowledge (I’m a fan, but they’re far from my favorite band), I just wanted to correct you.

Nosferatu said on Nov. 11, 2011

They got the Biggy Man’s name wrong….

Kabumek said on Nov. 11, 2011

Oh gawdangit Screw Attack.

Also I can’t watch it on my iPod so it looks like I have to wait until Sunday when I get back home to watch it :c

RadicOmega said on Nov. 11, 2011

@Dude Well my point is is that John Lennon and or Beatles are the source of the title and they are. It didn’t come from a rape scene

Matteomax said on Nov. 13, 2011

Even though Giygas is considered a boss, I still think they did a freakin’ good job on it.

anonymous said on Nov. 13, 2011

I dressed up as Ness for Halloween. One of my friends who had always seemed to ignore Earthbound suddenly recognized it and said it was awesome, and said she’d seen the boss battle while looking up the scariest boss battles ever She had apparently not been able to sleep very well for a few days. I then realized that Giygas had never creeped me out that much when I first played Earthbound (even though I was about twelve or thirteen years old at the time). I think the creepier elements of Earthbound are just a lot less creepy in context for some reason, which is probably why people who have never played it make such a big deal out of it.

Captain said on Nov. 15, 2011

How come RadicOmega and I’s argument Isnt up anymore?

Mato said on Nov. 15, 2011

Because it didn’t belong here.

RadicOmega said on Nov. 15, 2011

@Captain, our argument was childish, pointless and off topic. I’m really glad Mato deleted it. My reputation on this site is bad enough and I was starting to clean it up but know it’s bad again.

ScReWaTtAcKeD said on Nov. 17, 2011

Heh, you get it? Kicking! As in how the Giygas fetus theory is literally a fetus kicking… OH SHUT UP!

Dialga Thunderstar said on Jan. 21, 2012

Kabumek said on Mar. 26, 2012

You can’t see a mirror if all the lights are off -.- Since mirrors work by reflecting light, I think.

joe said on Nov. 11, 2012

i cannot grasp the fact that i am a kid and i think giygas is just a little wierd, and that all the adult men on the internet think giygas is the scariest thing ever. WUT?
