Check out the goodies I'm selling on eBay!

May 29th, 2011 | Auctions, EarthBound

A while ago we discovered that EarthBound was originally intended (or most likely was, anyway) to have a standard-sized Super NES game box with different box art than what we got in the end. (reference 1, reference 2).

Just today, an auction was posted on eBay for a promotional poster that features a lot of box art from the 1994/1995-ish era, including that proto box art of EarthBound, you can check it out here.

The poster was used in retail stores – I can totally see this being hung up in a store like Babbage’s or something like that. It’s cool that old promo stuff like that is still around, maybe there’s still hope for some more official EarthBound posters to be found!

It’s only up for $1.29 right now? I’m guessing that won’t last long.

I was hoping this would slide by unnoticed… There goes my shot at winning it :P

They noticed it on the forums, so the big bidders already knew :P

I really like the prototype art. It’s a little more minimalistic. I think that’s the one big issue I have with the player’s guide. The style of having a bunch of memorable photos on the cover is ruined because they felt the need to have Belch vomit right in the middle of it.

I’ve got a friend who has a big poster for Zelda: Wand of Gamelon. Yes, one of the CD-i games. It’s hanging up in the garage over there. It uses the same art as on the game box. Admittedly, that’s the best artwork in the whole game. Still, I know it’s supposed to look like Zelda is waving a wand, but that whip-like “swish” around it combined with the rather evil expression on her face makes it look like she’s the evil overlord. At any rate, it’s a little faded having hung up in a room with no temp control for so long, but still is in fair condition. It would probably go for quite a bit if they ever sold it.

Heh, Comix Zone. That game was hard.

I like how they advertise Judge Dredd twice, the aweful game based on the aweful movie. LAAWWWW!

I’d have to check again to make sure, but I believe that symbol of the meteor circling the earth was originally used in the logo of Nintendo Power’s old Captain Nintendo story in the third or fourth issue. Of course, it was used in Nintendo Power’s original Earthbound preview, too.

I don’t know if I’d consider that to be real box art, just placeholder art. I know I can remember seeing a DKC logo box.
