There’s an old glitch lots of EarthBound fans know about by now, but just in case some haven’t heard about it, here it is!
Basically, during the fight with the Clumsy Robot in EarthBound, get the robot’s HP really low (you’ll have to go with your instincts on this one) and have Ness set your party members up with power shields. If you’re lucky, the robot will use a multi-targeted attack that will bounce off one shield – this will kill the robot and start the Runaway Five scene – but then the second attack will happen and kill the robot again.
It’s hard to explain, so here’s a video courtesy of DarkHamsterlord1:
I’m sure there are various ways of setting this up to get it to happen, maybe someone who’s done it recently can suggest some good setups. I’ve only done it once, and I was lazy so I used save states
If you’ve played through the game a million times already, try this out on your next run!

10 Comments to EarthBound Clumsy Robot Glitch
It certainly looks to be a highly useful oddity if only for the practical doubling of EXP. I wouldn’t mind seeing if it works with other enemies with such multiple-attack functionality, or if it’s merely a result of the Runaway Five event therein (which seems to be the far more likely).
I almost always trigger this glitch purely by accident, only because having power shields reflecting all that damage is highly beneficial if the robot feels like being a jerk and using his missiles constantly.
Kinda funny how the Clumsy Robot can either be the hardest or easiest boss in the game.

Well, I guess when it comes to this robot…
(sunglasses)
the developers were clumsy…

Well, I guess when it comes to the clumsiness of letting this glitch pass into the final game…
(sunglasses)
the developers were robots because robots could not think dynamically like humans…
YEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHH
Well. i never went this far in MOTHER 2 (Earthbound)
I always say good job finding this glitch in
Mother 2,There are some problems in games that
the creators missed these are called glitches.
they can also be called bugs. All games have
unfound glitches or bugs somewhere.
Most of the NES games have glitches. cause that was when “Video game companies” did not have the electricity
to make newer consles like the nintend wiii. that is why there is glitches in games. games like MOTHER,MOTHER2,MOTHER3,New super mario bros WII
all has glitches. This was a dark kirby63 history lesson. and you get extra exp for having a sheild on
thats cool! good job for finding it.
