Tips for Buying EarthBound

April 22nd, 2010 | EarthBound, Images, Merchandise

Over on deviantART, Dark Harry posted a really cool EarthBound poster:

It clearly took a lot of time to make 😯 If you’re interested, you can apparently buy one of the posters, see the link above for details/contact info.

Thanks to Diane over at Girl Gamers UK for the tip!

It says it’s on Zazzle on his DeviantArt. Only problem:

It’s not on Zazzle.

I wanna buy it too.

neonix said on Apr. 22, 2010

Damn. I would totally be in for one of these if Ness didn’t look like a brutally misshapen action figure.

JoeShmoe said on Apr. 22, 2010

Now, THAT’s more like it.

MG said on Apr. 22, 2010

Ness’s pose does look kinda weird.

Linkzcap said on Apr. 22, 2010

No matter how hard I try, I cannot understand Ness’s hand in the poster.

douglas said on Apr. 23, 2010

why is everybody made of playdough

TheMetroidMan said on Apr. 23, 2010

That poster looks incredible. Although it looks kinda funky, that was the style the artist was going for and I dig it, even though Ness’ hand kind of looks all contorted O.o! Definitely will buy that as a poster tho!

conn3r said on Apr. 23, 2010

im really confused about ness’ pose :\

Yoshimad123 said on Apr. 23, 2010

I saw this when it was first uploaded.
Ness’s pose hurts my brain.
But other than that, it’s good.

NeonSquid said on Apr. 23, 2010

Ness’s pose is so confusing!

Commander said on Apr. 23, 2010

Wow, so you’re just now finding this?

LakituAl said on Apr. 23, 2010

I agree with Neonix and Yoshimad123.

@PK Mt. Fuji: That is not Everdred, he is Dr. Ivo Robotnik, evil genius extraordinaire!!!

(Sorry, I could not resist).

Wumpus said on Apr. 23, 2010

is that an NES Zapper in Jeff’s hand?

starstormer said on Apr. 23, 2010

Looks awesome, and yeah that does look like an NES zapper in Jeff’s hand.

Anonymous said on Apr. 23, 2010

ness’s pose kind of looks like he is falling back on his memories or something.
i hope so because if that’s not what is happening, ness is failing at that split and going to pull his groin at any time now.

sigh said on Apr. 23, 2010

Nice how this gets posted and nearly everyone has something negative to say about it. Despite the fact that it clearly took a lot of time, effort and talent.

But that’s the internet for you. A million small-minded complaints and hardly any appreciation.

Axl-fox said on Apr. 23, 2010

this poster is such an acip trip

Anzon said on Apr. 23, 2010

I think Ness is trying to hold a bat, which is the brown thing by his hand. That’s the best I got. Other than that, yeah, it does look like he’s falling. I love the detail that went into all of the stuff in the background. 🙂

Kyoo said on Apr. 23, 2010

wow, I thought it looked alright when I first saw it, but then I clicked on it and clicked on it aain to see it full size and then I realized it was waaaaay better than alright, that thing is a masterpiece. it’s so beautiful when you see it full sized.

That’s porkey it half giygas half poiky

Jungyin said on Apr. 23, 2010

I would say the awkwardness of Ness’ hand and foot are valid points of criticism. No matter how much you time and effort you put into something, nothing and no one is perfect and you can’t improve if you don’t notice or ignore mistakes; there’s always room to get better.

neonix said on Apr. 24, 2010

Hey you know how people are entitled to like an artist’s style and praise the artist for it? Well people are also entitled to dislike a style or piece and state why if they wish to.

dookie said on Apr. 24, 2010

awesome poster, really detailed and thats TONS of models to work in there, and really pulled off very well.

about the pose, yeah its weird. I think its more of the foreshortening of the baseball bat, and less the hand that is the problem.

DarkHarry said on Apr. 24, 2010

Hi.
My name is David, aka DarkHarry, and I made this.
First of all, it’s in good tone of asking the permission before posting an artist’s work on a blog.
Second, yes, I realise now that Ness’ pose is a little odd, and his left hand could have been improved, as well as how he holds the bat. It took me more than 160 hours to complete this work, and yet, like most of my other illustrations, it’s far from perfect. But I think it would be in every one’s best interest to learn this little lesson: Read the other comments before writing down your own. The pose is weird, the hand sucks, I got it, you don’t have to tell me 20 times.
Third…
“and what is wrong with Venus..
Is she drunk??”
What the heck kind of a comment is this? If you’re not going to give some constructive criticism, just say nothing. Same thing goes for that Everdred comment. It’s a a personnal view of the characters from the EB universe. It’s not faithful to the original because it doesn’t want to be. This is my style, and how I see the characters, and describing what you see with your own perspective is the essence of being an artist.
If you’re going to say the pic sucks, at least give me a valid reason.
I was sure the EarthBound community was troll-free, guess I was wrong.

Oh, and by the way, thank you for adding my work to the central.

Hey DarkHarry. Where can one purchase this poster as it doesn’t seem to be available on Zazzle?

DarkHarry said on Apr. 24, 2010

@seenbucket
It’s no longer available for the momment, I had some troubles with Zazzle.

LakituAl said on Apr. 24, 2010

@DarkHarry

I said I was sorry for the Robotnik comment. Then again, Dr. Ivo is the world’s sexiest fat man, so it means your take on Everdred makes him the world’s second sexiest fat man!

Kyoo said on Apr. 24, 2010

@DarkHarry,

people don’t have to give reasons to you on why they think you pic sucked. people are entitled to their own opinions. and that said, nobody should ever have to ever have to explain their opinion. not all criticism has to be positive criticism. this isn’t grade school

Kyoo said on Apr. 24, 2010

@DarkHarry, thanks for that awesome poster, it was beautiful. I thought it was weird that you gave people noses. but it is a fantastic work of art.

Poe said on Apr. 24, 2010

kyoo, negative criticism can still be constructive.

Kyoo said on Apr. 24, 2010

@poe, yes I agree, and negative criticism is always needed. I feel people are too sensitive towards it’s

Felipe said on Apr. 24, 2010

@DarkHarry:

-First Thing: I don’t see why Mato had to ask you to put your work on a blog. You decided to share it with the internet, and yet he gave you the credits.

-Second: “What the heck kind of a comment is this? If you’re not going to give some constructive criticism, just say nothing.” This is not a place for giving constructive criticism, specifically. If we would like to say what we think to you, we would surely post on your Devianart. (This goes for everybody here)

-Third: Yes, we understand it’s your style. But this is no excuse for not finding it strange.

Well, I just wanted to comment on some points you made out there. Don’t think me gross or anything.

PKSTARMAN said on Apr. 24, 2010

1 Word…

Epic.

neonix said on Apr. 25, 2010

@DarkHarry, I just want to say that we weren’t telling you we don’t like it. We were not directing the comments at you.

This blog is very conversational in nature and in itself. We, the commentators, talk amongst ourselves in the comments. When one of us posts something, it is simply to slide our opinion out there and share it with the other visitors.

We didn’t go onto DeviantArt and all pummel your inbox with messages saying we don’t like how you portrayed Ness.

And most people don’t care if someone has already said the same thing they are going to say. Comments aren’t like an error report where one mention is enough to get something fixed; they are opinions and people tend to share similar ones, so get used to repetition.

If you’re going to use the “it’s already been stated” logic on the negative comments, then it’s a double standard to accept multiple people commenting positively. That only shows that you can’t take criticism and try to pretend that it isn’t there. You shouldn’t be so sensitive about it.

Take the criticism however you want, but don’t try to get rid of it. It’s always going to be there, and it’ll only grow more numerous as your popularity in the world grows.

I know what it’s like to get negative reception something that I put a lot of time, work, effort, and love into. But look, your art got to be a daily deviation, a status that every deviantArt artist would love to receive on their work. I think it’s a beautiful piece and the time spent is apparent, but I simply do not enjoy contorted hands and backwards feet. Sorry.

I respect people’s different perceptions and artists’ styles, but I still state my opinion. And so will most other people if they won’t be shot for it. That’s just something you have to accept or it will defeat you.

wat is rong with ness’ arm?(and shoe)

DarkHarry said on Jun. 3, 2010

I looked back at what I wrote on this blog, and I want to apologize for my odd behaviors.
I have a hard time accepting criticism, good or bad, and got a little too caried away. It’s just that it took me so long to do that pic and, you know, you develop some kind of bound with it. If you like EarthBound, you know what I’m talking about.
And yes, Ness’ pose is odd, the main problem being his foot and left hand, the one holding the bat.
I’m still very happy that you like the pic, and very proud that it was featured on the EarthBound Central.

By the way, you’ll be happy to know (for those of you who don’t hate me now) that I’m reposting the pic on zazzle at http://www.zazzle.ca/harry426
