In the past I wrote a couple articles about some of the similarities between EarthBound’s music and real-life music (see here and here), but YouTube user AgeOfPisces put together a very nice video showcasing some of the inspirations for the music in the game.
In hindsight I probably should’ve made a video like this for one of those above articles, but this one is probably better than anything I could’ve made
Anyway, check the video out!

Hmm why did it log me out? Whatever, still very interesting video.
Thanks for this post, Mato. This video is pretty well put together. If any of you get the chance, watch it.
Wasn’t the drugstore theme actually from somewhere else? I don’t remember what it was exactly, but I thought it was from some old folk song that sounds almost exactly like it
FOUND IT!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blZeRHg6RUM
This is actually what the drugstore song is from, the video was wrong
Keep on laughin’ really fits Moonside!
Not entirely off topic, listen to the intro’s:

The first 1 I can’t place because of the water, but I’m sure I heard it in EB.
The second one should be obvious (Dungeon Man related)

At “Guy”, that may be true, but that video in particular was recorded in 2007, and I can’t find any earlier recordings of it.
Anyway, the video contains things YouTube may find copylefted, so I downloaded the video as a backup.
Komaru, if you look a little harder you’ll find that ‘Dallas Rag’ dates back to the 20s. There’s no doubt that it’s where the drugstore theme originates from
@Komaru I found an older recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K1AOSfOQbk

At Douglas,
Ahh, I see. “Dallas Ragtime” is sort of a generic name for a song, so it was hard to find that exact one, let alone one that dates back before Mother.
Check out this video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNbmmfzjrTs&feature=channel It’s cool and funny, basically, It’s what would happen If Family Guy and EarthBound would combine!!
I was watching “Kyou no Ryouri” (a.k.a. “Today’s Menu”), a Japanese cooking show on NHK. They had a kind of goofy guest chef who would have his band play various tunes as set-ups for bad food-related puns. One of the songs was none other than “El Bimbo”. Certainly made me stop and listen!

- Dadalama: it definitely smells of fruity loops. I guess not bad (some of us were duped into learning on it and have a hard time with better vst...
- EarthBoundRules: Eh, it’s okay but I wouldn’t download it.
- Haurspex: Oh Fruity Loops… how I hate thee…
- douglas: these kinda suck
- Harison: Aniki is not a combination of Gurren Lagann and Earthbound Music. Disappointment ensues.

I’ve always loved the Mother 2’s Music (as well as the other games). Nice to see where most of the music came from!
