We Westerners tend to post ASCII art once in a while, but in Japan, especially on 2channel, drawing things out of letters is practically a form of art. It’s common for threads there to be nothing but letter art, as can be seen in this archive of a MOTHER 2 thread called MOZAER.

It’s basically a bunch of text art of MOTHER 2 / EarthBound stuff going from the start of the game up to Giant Step. I wouldn’t expect anyone sane to draw the entire game that way. It’d be cool if someone made a hack of the game into weird graphics like that though
You can also check out a MOTHER 1 version here!

Haha, nice. I saw that face before.
@Antiaverage
Isn’t that the Giko cat?
I recall Mona was with an inverted A for a mouth.
ah, yes. The japanese. Only on places like 2chan do you find stuff like this.

Reminds me of the good ol’ BBS days of the early-mid 90’s. Oh, ACiD and iCE we miss you so.
And I thought I had too much time on my hands…kinda neat though.

Wait, the links to the art isn’t acutually on 2chan, right? I don’t want my mom getting concerned about me.
Which font do you need to view these threads?
The formatting is broken in whatever font firefox has decided to use.
I see garbled lines of cat ears and cat faces.
You roll the dice my friend!
I think that’s how it workks.
And also I need more imagination to this :3

So cool.
This is an instance of Shift_JIS art ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shift_JIS_art ). It’s much like ASCII art, but instead of using the ASCII character set in a monospaced font, you use a variable width font and the Shift_JIS character set, which is NOT UNICODE, but similar in that you get characters beyond ASCII.
That is pretty niftey, If some hacking team gets together and turns the games graphics into that, you deserve a medal. Even though it does sound like a huge task.
That.is.AWESOME.
It must have taken hours to finish one scene.
Oh, I like the Earthbound intro page (http://77483.fc2web.com/extra/07.html) the most. Wonderful.

Well, Japan does use the extended Unicode set on a day to day basis. Our characters set is pathetic in comparison. Also, ASCII art /is/ an art form, not practically. America may have started it back in the days of ARPANet, but the Japanese perfected it with the extended Unicode set.
Also, this is the story of Mother 2 with Mona taking the place of Ness. Mona is a famous ASCII cat character on 2chan, basically the mascot of 2chan.
