Tips for Buying EarthBound

August 14th, 2009 | EarthBound, Hacking

EarthBound hacking has kind of quieted down compared to what it was years ago, but in these past few months some huge new breakthroughs have been made, such as Mr. Accident’s CCScript app and Rufus’s EB++ stuff. There are other things going on too, but I can get into that in another update sometime.

Basically, all this recent work has made impossible things possible. This is partly thanks to the fact that EarthBound is basically just a giant scripting language under the hood. Makes it hell to hack/translate, but awesome for customization and added functionality.

Anyway, as a little test of some of his new work, Rufus put together a small EarthBound hack which he simply calls “Hack”. It’s a text adventure thing and not very long (since it IS just a test/demo), but it’s very impressive. Give it a shot!

Here’s the patch and the patcher program, you’ll need an emulator and an EarthBound ROM, but you’ll have to get those yourself.

There’s an official MOTHER 2 choose-your-own-adventure book that’s kind of rare. I have a copy and if I had infinite time I’d love to translate it and make it into a hack kind of like this. Anybody have a few million dollars they’re not using? 😉

Looks neat. I’ll try this out after the EBFGP.

I thought Hack could not be described with words and must be experienced?

That was extremely cool and pretty fun for just a test hack. You really can do anything with these new EB Hacking apps…

Hey, Mato, why don’t you send out scans of the book to some of the billingual PK Hackers out there and ask them to collaborate on it?

Mato said on Aug. 15, 2009

There’s probably like only one or two of us, and the book’s about 400 pages of non-easy text.

Hey Mato! I’m that guy who picked up that text adventure book a few weeks back when you featured it in your weekly wrapup. I’ve been translating it (slow going at first, but I’m getting into a groove now). Only have the charts/graphs, rules, and the first few chapters done (out of 400 or so) but i have lots of free time coming up this year. Can’t make it a promise just yet, but I’d love to be able to collaborate somehow with a project of this scope… 🙂
