Tips for Buying EarthBound

August 28th, 2009 | Auctions, EarthBound

Hey look, someone’s selling EarthBound for the PC. Cool.

Oh, wait, EarthBound isn’t a PC game. He’s just selling a bunch of ROMs. That’s not cool. Do people actually fall for these things?

Quote from listing:

“Do a search right now on EBAY and try to find Earthbound for the PC!! You may not be able to find it listed anywhere.”

Yeah, because it doesn’t exist. Ugh, people like that guy are content with preying on the ignorant. It’s disgusting.

LucasTizma said on Aug. 28, 2009

Wow! Nintendo silently released EarthBound for the PC?! Reggy sure is a sneaky little bastard. ;)

Spitball Sparky said on Aug. 28, 2009

Yesterday’s games at today’s prices?

But things are more expensive today…especially EarthBound-related things.

Matoking said on Aug. 28, 2009

I recall a Chinese Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess PC bootleg?

They are actually just bundling the copied ROM with emulation software.

Userofdoom said on Aug. 28, 2009

I saw that a while back, they’re just ROMs. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just a .txt file saying “You’re using an illegal ROM!”.

Neon Squid said on Aug. 28, 2009

What the hell is Harvest Moon XP? Is it for Windows XP or something, lol. I never heard of some of the other games either.

I wonder if people will report him.

Keiji Dragon said on Aug. 28, 2009

Trying to sell a “PC version” of EarthBound on eBay, along with another pirated games? And they’re asking for that price?

This appropriately demonstrates how I fell:

I ran into another guy doing this. I eventually got eBay to come down on him; it worked :D

Giving out ROMs is bad enough, SELLING them?? This guy needs to get in trouble.

SuperTrainStationH said on Aug. 28, 2009

How stupid can you get? :|

Blueman said on Aug. 28, 2009

Fail.

zelgreywards said on Aug. 28, 2009

Dr. Glove, there’s far more to that particular seller than just the Earthbound bootleg.

http://shop.ebay.ca/ebook-eseller/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=

According to this he’s selling numerous ROMs coupled with emulators. I’ve reported several of them but would like to be able to just report the seller in general. I just don’t know how.

LucasTizma said on Aug. 28, 2009

Seemingly, he would be suspended from eBay after several attempts at this…

Earthbound_X said on Aug. 28, 2009

Looks like I have another eBay user to report, join me all!

Earthbound_X said on Aug. 28, 2009

How does this jackass have good feedback?

Earthbound_X said on Aug. 28, 2009

http://pages.ebay.ca/help/contact_us/_base/index.html?Contactus=Contact+us

If you click the Listing Violations options, you can report 10 of http://myworld.ebay.ca/ebook-eseller/ items at once. I did that, then reported one more the normal way, and told Ebay to ban him.

I’m not expecting results though, I doubt the people who run EBay are gamers…

Earthbound_X said on Aug. 28, 2009

Wow would my last post be modded? You guys don’t wanted people selling illegal things to be banned?

Mato said on Aug. 28, 2009

The spam filter saw you post multiple links (3 total including your name link) so it flagged it for moderation automatically. No foul play involved.

Earthbound_X said on Aug. 28, 2009

Ah, OK, I see, thanks Mato

That One Guy said on Aug. 28, 2009

I just flagged a bunch of that guy’s stuff. Hopefully eBay will get the hint.

Jeagle101 said on Aug. 28, 2009

I hope people aren’t actually this stupid to buy this…

Deiphobus said on Aug. 28, 2009

stealing games AND emulators?

santiagoff said on Aug. 28, 2009

That’s no good.

PKSTARMAN said on Aug. 28, 2009

This guy really thinks we are stupid… Who will fall in this?! Did you see that? Harvest Moon XP? Paper Mario and Banjo Tooie? They are NOT PC games! Cmon this guy think someone is gona fall in that?! Good article Mato, Thanks to let me know theres still stupid guys that sells obviously NOT PC games! Thank you, PKSTARMAN out.

captain_falcon said on Aug. 28, 2009

EarthBound…AND Banjo Tooie? Definitely too good to be true…ee.

Cyclone said on Aug. 28, 2009

Wow, what a terrible job he did on making fake box art. You can still see the part that says it comes with a free guide AND some of the part that says “Only for Nintendo”.

Tomical said on Aug. 28, 2009

At Earthbound X:
Considering most of his feedback comes from accounts either selling the exact same thing he’s selling or have just as much positive feedback without selling anything, I’m absolutely certain that they’re sockpuppet accounts.

Ice Sage said on Aug. 28, 2009

I’ve run into people doing this on eBay before, but I couldn’t figure out how to report them (I was little, ok?). It’s sad that people do this, but really, this is stupid. I’m glad you brought attention to this, Mato.

Jesse said on Aug. 28, 2009

Paper Mario and Banjo Tooie SNES games? wat.

LakituAl said on Aug. 28, 2009

Kids, there’s nothing more cool than getting your hands on an Earthbound game, but if someone tries to sell you a ROM and/or emulators, that’s NO GOOD!

stardude said on Aug. 28, 2009

WHAT THE (insert several swear words here.)!

I don’t know who’s more idiotic, the (expletive)s that sell this fecal matter or the (same expletive)s that buy this fecal matter.

Welcome to the world of eBay!

Satsy said on Aug. 28, 2009

A victory, for the justice that is ‘people with the sense to report dud auctions’!

Be pleased, people who reported. Be pleased.

Mr. Jupiter said on Aug. 28, 2009

ROMs are illegal, selling them is likely to spell trouble.

Mr. Crosser said on Aug. 28, 2009

Oh, and don’t forget about the copy protection at the end of the game….

Mr. Crosser said on Aug. 28, 2009

Sonic: “Kids, there’s nothing more cool then buying a game you love, but if some douchebag tries to sell you illegal ROMs on Ebay, that’s no good!”

Poe said on Aug. 28, 2009

Don’t let this upset you guys too bad, just be sure to report similar listings in the future. They always get taken care of eventually.

pidgezero_one said on Aug. 28, 2009

I saw that earlier. Just terrible. :(

Blarg said on Aug. 29, 2009

This is pitifully hilarious. At least this jerk-wad is being dealt with. There will always be a-holes such as this fine example who exploit the idiotic (or simply ignorant)masses out there. Remember kiddies: always do your homework before purchasing anything, especially online. If the seller/site/company/what have you doesn’t seem or isn’t legit, avoid wasting your time and money on it.

But all of us Urfbownd fans already knew this much. :)

steak said on Aug. 29, 2009

Hahaha this is the funniest thing I’ve seen all day.
WHAMO! GAME STUDIOS- yeah that sounds legit.

TBird said on Aug. 29, 2009

New copies of EarthBound came in a big enough box to be a PC game. Of course younger gamers may not remember giant PC game boxes.

Vinny said on Aug. 29, 2009

Thanks for posting this. I’ve been looking for the PC version of Earthbound forever.

Xi said on Aug. 29, 2009

“Do they think we are stupid?”

You have to remember, that we are not the ones sellers like this rip off. Of course we are not going to bite.

The people who this is geared toward (and are willing to fall for it), are those who may have played a few games when they were younger, then never played again as they got older. I’ve had several coworkers who may have had a SNES or NES growing up, but they stopped playing video games around the time they were 10 or 11. Other people may have had a copy of pokemon and played it back in the day, but never owned anything other than the Gameboy.

So now you have a bunch of people who played maybe one or two of these games a long time ago, and have not played video games since, but of course use a computer for business, e-mail, and to play solitaire. So running across eBay these people see “Pokemon Stadium” or “Zelda: Ocarina of Time” or “Earthbound” for the PC. They recognize it as a game from their childhood they can (apparently) now play on the computer. It’s only $10, so they bite.

Just look at his feedback! He is getting great reviews from people who bought the item, who have no clue they are playing a pirated game. That is who it is geared towards.

NovaManXP said on Aug. 29, 2009

Thankfully we’re all reporting these things so no one else is tricked into buying this crap…

Mr. Crosser said on Aug. 29, 2009

Xi:

I definitely see where you’re coming from.

Leirin said on Aug. 29, 2009

They don’t even have the Aladdin game! *bonk*

Earthbound_X said on Aug. 29, 2009

Actually if, you click on his items, it notes he has sold one or two. I actually contacted one of the people who bought one.

Told him it was fake, they wrote back in very poor grammar, so I guess they were very young, or some older person who barely uses a computer.

LakituAl said on Aug. 29, 2009

skyrunner14 said on Aug. 30, 2009

For all it’s worth, Resident Evil 2 actually WAS released on the PC officially. Still, it’s rather sad how people would stoop THIS low…

korru said on Aug. 30, 2009

This makes me sick. Even the slogan really bothers me, “Yesterday’s games at TODAY’S prices!” …What is that…

Jimmy said on Aug. 31, 2009

@korru:
yeah, i know. It’s like saying: “Get old stuff for a higher price!”

Mr. Crosser said on Sep. 2, 2009

god do these a**holes ever quit? eBay should just track them down and throw them in court, or at least IP ban them..

Ness and Sonic said on Nov. 4, 2009

Earthbound on PC. What a load of lies. This punk should be sued by Nintendo and the parties that have that copyrights stepped on by the game. It would serve him right and provide Nintendo an opportunity to try fix some of the legal issues of the game.

Mr. Crosser said on Nov. 14, 2009

I think that this pretty much how it works

1. Those bastards hack an ebay account that is located in England
2. They put up those “CD-ROM games” up and try to make money
3. The account gets banned after an innocent ebay user gets hacked.
4. REPEAT!

eee said on Jan. 5, 2011

someone bought this cd for me it does really work but my only problem with this rom is that it doesn’t save besides that i did not find anything wrong with these games
