Tips for Buying EarthBound

July 27th, 2009 | Events, MOTHER 1

On July 27, 1989, Shigesato Itoi’s RPG “MOTHER” was released in Japan. Twenty years later, we take a look back at the game that started the series 😀

I put together a page to commemorate the event. It’s nothing too special, but check it out here!

@IWontGetOvertheDam: He’s probably celebrating with two of his little girlfriend interns and a jug of sake.

@IWontGetOvertheDam: He probably doesn’t even remember it XD

Anyway, HAPPY MOTHER-VERSARY EVERYONE! :3

A 20 year old mother, wow just like my grandmother was!

Wow, 20 years. Feels like just yesterday I was first discovering the series. Hmm…
Happy MOTHER’s Day Everyone 😀

I’m actually in the process of trying to play through Mother completely for the first time. I tried it back in 2001 or so and didn’t have the patience for it… now that better guides are available I’m having a bit more fun with it, although I’m doing it more out of the sense that to truly be a fan of the Mother series I have to complete the original.

This Mother 1+2 translation… is it going to be night and day compared to the Earthbound 0 prototype? I’d just always thought that the dialogue in the game was simplistic because it was an earlier game… but can the English truly not compare to the original Japanese translation?

I am inclined to play through all of MOTHER for this, too. I feel refreshed. Thanks, Lucas.=P

Great stuff, and a fun look back.

Sent off a thank-you mail today as well.

That page is “…nothing too special…”? I like it, and I definitely love the fan-art collaboration video you put up. Happy 20th anniversary, MOTHER!

BottleRocket said on Jul. 27, 2009

I’m glad I beat MOTHER in time for its 20th anniversary. The celebration page has a lot of great art and music, too. Happy MOTHER’s day!

Wow, makes me feel so old! Two decades the game has been around, which in the grand scheme of things isn’t very long, but all things considered, it was undoubtedly an instant classic. A true testament to the Japanese art of storytelling. I’ve never come across a set of games that could pull at your heartstrings like the Mother series can. I hope all fans will pass these games on to their children and grandchildren so that they may bring joy and inspiration to future generations.

Leirin said on Jul. 27, 2009

Wow, thank you so very much for getting me into the spirit with that wonderful page, Tomato. I almost wanted to break out the Kleenex (for one reason or another — I’m just very sentimental, okay?!). Please celebrate today, everyone — it won’t come again. I’ll work on my second playthrough of MOTHER1 today, I think. 😀 It’s a good thing I finished my three MOTHER game pictures in time. I don’t know if I’ve ever had such a good time playing a game series before.

Ice Sage said on Jul. 27, 2009

I have decided to start a new EB0 file in honor of today. Probably not the best idea with school and AP classes coming up soon, but…oh well.

@SmaMan: 🙁

Mato said on Jul. 27, 2009

Xi: It’s not going to be night and day difference, but you’ll notice a difference. I’m actually finding strange mistakes, text additions, and text removals as I go through the script.

Komaru said on Jul. 27, 2009

Whew, we’ve come along way.
Also note that today is the 100th anniversary of George returning.
:O

Mother turned 20…it was spectacular!

SmaMan said on Jul. 27, 2009

Man not only did we not get Mother on the VC today, but we didn’t get ANYTHING on the VC for that matter… sigh… oh well, I didn’t get my hopes up too much.

Happy MOTHER’s Day!

Steve! said on Jul. 27, 2009

This is nice but it would be really cool if Nintendo announced a rerelease of Mother 1 or made some aknowledgement of its 20th aniversary.

@SmaMan: Oh well.
Maybe in twenty years or so.

shadowdeku said on Jul. 27, 2009

Today’s my birthday, so I should commemorate Mother’s 20th by sitting down and at least trying to play through it again.

Chimera said on Jul. 27, 2009

I’m celebrating by wearing a bunch of MOTHER merch, playing through EB0, I’ll be taking a picture later of my EB collection.

Someone Else said on Jul. 27, 2009

I’ve played through MOTHER twice. Once on the NES rom, and once on the 1+2 GBA rom in a flash cart + translation. I was actually surprised at how easy and managable the game seemd the second time round. It was probably because of beforehand knowledge, but I didn’t think it was that hard or frustrating at all, even with all the random encounters.

Rosecloud said on Jul. 27, 2009

Happy MOTHER 20th anniversary!
I was waiting this precious day, well, I submit a special video for all the fans! Thanks so much for the review!

A couple of the music tracks are broken. In particular, The Hippie’s Drug Store and Ninten’s Dream.

Keiji Dragon said on Jul. 27, 2009

After 20 years, the MOTHER series has been through quite the equivalent of giving birth to a child and been through abortions and “prolonged pregnancies”* in its years. So I thought I would say Happy Birthday MOTHER, and thank you for giving birth to a new precedent in RPG storytelling. =)

Mato said on Jul. 27, 2009

blahmoomoo: dunno what to say, I checked and those links work fine for me…

Roy said on Jul. 28, 2009

I can only say this: Happy birthday mother series!

FinalstarmanDX said on Jul. 28, 2009

Ahh the memories, hippies, snakes, canaries, melodies, aliens, and Starmen. Happy birthday mother, on the 25th aniversery we should have an Earthbound Zero-con

blahmoomoo said on Jul. 28, 2009

Mato: Those URLs are malformed. At the end, it says The%2520Hippie’s%2520Store.mp3 when it should be The%20Hippie’s%20Store.mp3

I was able to download that one after modifying the URL, but I couldn’t get Ninten’s Dream. Then I realized that Ninten’s Dream is part of Rock Candy 3 and I already have it 😛

Claus said on Jul. 28, 2009
