April 29th, 2009 | EarthBound, Misc.

A recent Japanese polling site asked the question, “Which game series would you like to see get turned into a Hollywood movie?” The results were as follows:
- Dragon Quest
- Takeshi’s Challenge
- Metal Gear
- Tetris
- Spelunker
- Legend of Zelda
- MOTHER
- Phoenix Wright
- The Portopia Serial Murder Case
- Grand Theft Auto
I dunno, some of those things seem pretty weird to me (Tetris?) but it’s cool that the MOTHER series got into the top 10 like that. I really, really doubt anything will ever come of this, but we can at least dream… and watch things like EarthBound Saga

88 Comments to Japan Wants a MOTHER Movie
I can’t see Mother working as a hollywood movie to be honest. I’d love to see any of them as an anime film though, althoguh I think Mother 3 would work the best.
Yeah, I’d love to see a movie of dragon quest, metal gear, zelda, mother, or phoenix wright… that’s pretty cool… and shows much of a geeky nerd I am….
None of the Mother games would work as a film at all. A Mother film building upon the series’ conventions with a totally new setting and storyline, though… That could work.
(you know, kind of like what Earthbound and Mother 3 did)
I agree, the series (mostly Mother 3) tells its story best as a video game, doing some things that can’t be adapted to any other medium.
Having said that, if they decided to make a movie anyway about one of the games, I think Mother 3 would be the best candidate, with Mother 1 in a fairly distant second.
O.o I guess I should have registered before posting stuff to this site. Goodbye, LucasTizma199.
I can see Dragon Quest , Metal Gear , Legend of Zelda , Phoenix Wright and GTA working as a movie.
I don’t know Takeshi’s Challenge , Spelunker and The Portopia Serial Murder Case. What are those? :X
Tetris could be a very good movie or a very bad one. A documentary about the game would work… maybe.
MOTHER series can actually be very good for a movie. But I’d need a lot more character development. Like , A LOT more.

Mother 3 would be the best because it has the most character development. But Mother 2 seems to have a more winding adventure, while mother 3 tends to stay around Tazmily.

I think that most Hollywood movies (at least the blockbusters that Japan loves) tend to NOT focus on character development. Trying to stuff too much of that into a ~90 minute film adaptation could turn off general audiences I bet.
Anyway, if Hollywood tried to make something out of the series, I can just imagine Ness with sunglasses and a bat, with full-screen explosions happening everywhere behind him and Mr. Saturn by his side as some funky music played
I wouldn’t want Hollywood to touch the series though. 99% of all game movies suck, and I’d hate to see an EB movie wind up like the latest Dragon Ball movie (barf smiley goes here)

Ah, yes. A Tetris movie. We can see the love affair between the L-block and the J-block unfold on the silver screen.
For Phoenix Wright, they could easily thread together all the cases connected with the Kurain Master and make a decent film out of it. Throw in a few camera-circling, CGI-heavy OBJECTION! sequences and you’ve got a hit…among Ace Attorney fans. Maybe it would go straight to DVD.
I could see a game like MOTHER worked into a film plot. Of course you can’t fit every detail of the game into a 90 minute movie. If it was made in Hollywood, we’d end up with a heavily abridged story with too much of a focus on Ninten and Ana’s affection. Maybe they’d make up for it with the robot battle sequence.
Tetris…? I could see Solitaire, but Tetris?
I think there were discussions of a Mother 3 movie post EarthBound 64′s cancellations, right?
Japan has an unhealthy obsession with Dragon Quest.
@sparky: Well , how could they not have that big of an obsession with Dragon Quest? I mean , DQ there is THE rpg father , while here it’s just a not-popular-at-all series (except for 8).
I don’t want any of these games made into move adaptions because look at every game based movie…terrible except for Mortal Kombat and even that is kind of hated on.
I would like to see a TETRIS movie, however! hahaha
@Mato: LOL It’s SO true! And Mr. Saturn would actually be some punk rocker kid with a big nose and a bow tied to his one hair with a severe speech impediment. O.o Hollywood, leave our precious MOTHER alone.
Grand Theft Auto made #10? Sure it’s a great franchise, but Hollywood has already exploited organized crime so flipping much.

I dunno. i’ve actually imagined a Mother1 movie before. I actually pictured it like an old disney musical with the vocal songs from the soundtrack album. Heck, i even tried visioning a screenplay in my head under those circumstances at one point. I probably should’ve written it down, though.
Anyway, i’m saying that it doesn’t seem that impossible to me.
I couldve sworn there WAS a Grand Theft Auto movie. Huh.
And Tetris??! WTF?
as much as I would LOVE to see a MOTHER movie, i think Hollywood would DESTROY the crap out of it. i prefer it as a game and that’s that.
however, i think Metal Gear and Legend of Zelda would be pretty cool [even though they'd probably get messed up], but seriously WTF tetris? how do u make a movie out of that that will actually capture people’s attentions? XDD
If they could make a decent movie out of it, Mother 3 definitely would be the best candidate. I always felt that its plot was way too big for the second dimension.
Of course, a 3-D remake would be even better! (like that would ever happen)
I would like to see a Mother 3 Movie as well as MGS or a Zelda one.
I almost think an EB0 movie would fair better simply because it’s a shorter story, so it would be easier to cram it into the short parameters of a movie, and expand in areas like character development. Regardless I still wouldn’t want to see Hollywood or Disney or anyone go near the series.

“A Takeshi’s Challenge movie?
Insane.”
I know. That part were you leave the paper out in the sun for an hour would keep me on the edge of my seat.

Voted MOTHER1, although I can’t say the live-action filmed commercial didn’t help persuade my answer…
Why not Tetris? It kinda works with Minesweeper as well.
My thoughts on each possible movie:
1. Never played it.
2. Never played it.
3. Already a movie.
4. WHAT???
5. Never heard of it.
6. Sounds good.
7. MOTHER FTW.
8. Hmm…
9. Never heard of it.
10. Meh.
Tetris already IS a movie:
Weird, i had a dream like this, and all the characters were by 12 year olds

Hahaha.. Nice @ beams.
..and Tobey Macguire as Ness.
Oh, Ell, do you want to be my officially married block wife?
Oh Jay, it hurts my heart to deny your love, for my heart seeks your company, but you must see the patterns on the wall, we just don’t fit together…
So it’s that foreign bastard Ai, with his long an slender figure, right? I kbew you were cheating on me, but my best friend?! That’s it, I’m leaving you!
God, a tetris movie would be awesome!!
XD! Finally someone wants 2 maek a MOTHER movie, but i r hope it premieres h3re 2, we r s0 familiar with tat homie in teh baesbawl hat, caryin a mr. saturn at his side, who knows wat act0rz will star in this (if ever possible)
Bawt Tetris, who will star in that, teh balock
“but something from Phoenix Wright would be awesome.”
There is a Phoenix Wright musical in Japan done by an all-woman cast. I’d imagine it would come to DVD eventually and a fan would translate.
I don’t think Spelunker would make a good movie. What with the characters being prone to dying so easily (be it falling about 2 foot or being hit by bat excrement…).
Also for some reason I can see Takeshi’s Challenge and Grand Theft Auto being pretty similar in plot

Personally, out of all these I’d like to see a Dragon Quest V or Gyakuten Saiban movie the most. Gyakuten Saiban because it would really work, and Dragon Quest V just because I think it has the best story of the Dragon Quest games, and the live action commercials make me want a whole movie or series.
Those are here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyFoGYV8wJY&fmt=18 (SFC)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw4OYVJZnbQ (DS) I think there are several of these, but it’s hard to find all the different ones.
As for MOTHER, I really think it’s best the way it is. Little fan animations are awesome, though. I just wouldn’t want to see it… especially as an American made movie. Maybe Japanese. I’d rather a live-action compilation of scenes from all three games, acted out by real people while some nicely arranged music from the games played, or something.
I’d love to see a Mother movie. It has such a good story line and feeling of emotion that it would be perfect. It would be better if it was made into several different movies like Star Wars, so nothing could get cut out. I think Mother 1 and 2 would make the best, Mother 3 might be a little hard but pretty good. They could even dress the Mother 1 characters the same way they did in the commercial. I don’t want to see any of the other games on the list turned into movies. Besides, who wants to see a Tetris movie, thats like watching grass grow for two and a half hours.
If any of them were to be made into a movie, I don’t think they would get good reviews or make much money.
What I think of each one:
1. There’s already a live-action play of DQ2, so why not?
2. Comedic genius!
3. This could work…
4. I agree, but how?
5. …what?
6. If it’s anything like that fake trailer, maybe.
7. Only if done correctly.
8. A crime drama! Genius!
9. Same as above.
10. Knowing it’s popularity HERE, I’m surprised this HASN’T happened yet.
You know a MOTHER movie could work if they did it in claymation.

The first two games are too intra-personal and aren’t character driven enough to make a very good Hollywood movie, but maybe Mother 1.
Mother 3 on the other hand, has a much stronger plot and stronger characters.
Also, you simply can’t put Giygas/Giegue into physical form, or really change it in any way from its 16-bit/8-bit form without robbing it of its emotional power and mysterious and overwhelming presence.
I have no idea how a Tetris movie would work out, but if one is made, then it’s guaranteed to be awesome. (Or hilariously sucky.)
A movie adaptation of Dragon Quest IV would be pretty epic if done correctly.
MOTHER 1 or 2 would be awesome as a Tim Burton claymotion movie or something.
If any of the three were to be made, I think Earthbound/Mother 2 would be the one. mother 3′s shocking revelation of King P wouldn’t make sense to those who haven’t played Mother 2. Plus with what graphics can do now-a-days, the giygas battle would be THE coolest thing to ever witness. Ness seems to be like a more well-known character world-wide comparatively to the other 2 main characters. I’d like there to be a mother one as well as a Mother 3 one, but in order to convince anyone of making a movie, Earthbound’d be the best choice.
Mother 3. Its easily the deepest and most emotional of the Trilogy.
To be honest, I think Mother would be a great movie, Mother 3 is more of a book kind of thing. Mother is short, and while I played it, it seemed more of a movie type of game. Earthbound belongs in only video games, and and the earthbound saga, and other series that I forgot.
OK, first, let me say this: HOW THE HECK CAN TETRIS BE A MOVIE?!?!?!?!
Now I’ve got that out of my system, here goes: Mother would be the best movie, because Earthbound and Mother 3 are too long to fit into a good movie. In my opinion, Earthbound would be best left as a game (though it should only be fixed up and advertised better first if they’re going to redo it, not fully redone), and Mother 3 would be best as an anime. Mother, though, has the shortest story, and I can imagine it being a great movie…not that that’s likely to happen, considering that not only was it never actually released outside of Japan, but people tend to novelize it (kinda badly sometimes)…and after Eragon was so cruelly butchered, Twilight got messed up, and Harry Potter didn’t really turn out that great, I don’t want Hollywood touching the Mother series. No wait, scratch that. I don’t want Hollywood even thinking about glancing out of the corner of their evil little eyes at the Mother series.
I’m alittle worried about Mother being a movie because, first of all, Hollywood always have to add in, leave out, or change something that was originally in the book, game, etc. I think it should be left as a game. o3o
Mother is something you should PLAY, not watch. How else are you gonna get the full experience of the gameplay?
Still, if there was a Mother movie, being an obsessive fan, I’d watch it anyways. C:
I would DEFINETLY have to agree with Mother/EarthBound, BUT only if it comes to America, and is made by either LucasFilm, LTD., or 20th Cerntury fox. Nintendo, MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
The only way I would accept a Mother movie is if it was in the animation category being a Japanese team but using a western animation studio and style
(I have to say the reason I prefer Mother with a Western animation look rather than an anime look, is becuase the game didn’t go with an anime look and was a basic view on how Japan viewed the west (in a positive way) and its culture so thats why I always prefer people who do their adaptations of Mother in a Western style art rather than a Japanese anime style look)
But anyways a lot of live action movies based on games don’t do so well. Anyways thats My views on the subject anyways.
If my dream job of working at Pixar Animation Studios works out, and I form a tight enough friendship with John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton and Bob Peterson and Pete Docter, I would most likely spring the following question on them:
“When was the last time you saw a decent video-game movie?”
I think Pixar could do it, if anyone. Having seen most of their movies, I think that their practically perfect blend of heart and humor is something very rarely seen these days.
Of course, MOTHER2 would need to be a trilogy on its own, if one wanted to include EVERYTHING. A lot of character expansion would be needed for all three, obviously.
Also, because it’s obligatory…
HOW THE BELCH COULD TETRIS BE A MOVIE???
4. Wargames except the nukes are in Russia, Tetris is the security for the supercomputer, and Alexey Pajitnov is Dr. Falken.
7. It better be a miniseries and animated.

Yeah Tetris sure does deserve the number 4 slot.
Probably some punk kids messing with the poll!
Mother 3′s chapter system would make it a set of films instead of just one huge game crammed into just 90 minutes or less.
I have to say Mother/EB0 would be best suited to movie format. It’s not an incredibly long game in contrast to the other two, and its plot I think would work the best for a movie. Interesting introduction, plenty of climactic moments, a touching story overall without needing much background info on any of the characters.
I chose mother 3 but,it makes me wonder how they would do saturn valley…
Mother 3 definatly would make the best movie.
No other game supplied Sadness,Action and RPG Goodness all packed with an Epic Storyline.
I would like to see MOTHER 3 directed by James Cameron, and Tim Burton, and Burton can do MOTHER and Earthbound with Steven Spielberg
Tim Burton could make Earthbound Zero movie, because EBZ was the darkest game.
Mother 3 would make a good book.
But the trilogy would make a great anime.
What the ricardo kid said is correct!
But i would like to see MOTHER 3 by James Cameron!
It would be called:
James Cameron’s MOTHER 3!
All three, the second one continues the first and the third sums it all up. If Nintendo wants to test Earthbound outside of Japan, a movie would one way to go.
My advice: don’t called it Mother and don’t use a slogan along the lines of “This movie stinks!”
@ Amras Felagund
Maybe story about a Tetris Tournament? It is the only thing I can think of.
You know what, instead, why nit Christopher Nolan do Earthbound Zero and Earthbound, but Nolan teams up with Cameron for the 3rd!
Mother 3 would be the best one. But i’d like to have a Mother 2 movie better. But.. TETRIS? Really? What. The. Heck?
IF they make a movie of Earthbound… I really hope the phrase isn’t “This Movie Stinks!”
Tetris?…how would that become a movie? Its just a bunch of stupid blocks stacking up. EarthBound and Mother 3 would make an AWESOME MOVIE!!! But Mother is not that great (its good but not THAT good)
It would be epic if all three movies were together so that way, it makes a story.

@chosen4
Obviously, so they can watch a movie about people robbing people and fighting like there was no tomorrow. After all, we need more movies like those.
the original 2 might make a 90 minute film but mother 3 will be about 2 or more hours.

I dunno how a MOTHER movie would work, but something from Phoenix Wright would be awesome.
