Tips for Buying EarthBound

February 11th, 2009 | EarthBound, Videos

The Happy Video Game Nerd posted a review of EarthBound. It’s pretty kickass, and he did a loooooooot more research on the subject than most professional game article writers have ever done in the past 10 years. Very impressive work. I shall someday shake this dude’s hand! (but EarthBound Zero wasn’t a fan translation 😛 ) Like he mentions, it’s almost more of a documentary than a review.

Apparently EarthBound was his most requested game to be reviewed. Wonder if he’d be interested in doing a MOTHER 3 review someday, that would be interesting 🙂 Also, go say hello here 😀

That was absolutely incredible.

Poe said on Feb. 11, 2009

This might have been better separated into 2 reviews: one for just the game, and one for all the crap its gone through with its prequels and sequels and whatnot. I sorta wish people would stop shouting about how ignored the series is sometimes and just enjoy the games for what they are.

Millhouse said on Feb. 11, 2009

Wow. That’s someone who knows his videogames. noticed PK starmen? Maybe a reference to starmen.net?

I only noticed now that in that short clip from SSB Ness almost runs over two of the runaway 5…

YAOMTC said on Feb. 11, 2009

Wow, that was excellent. I think I’ll be following his series from now on…

Spyden said on Feb. 11, 2009

He’s one of my favorite reviewers out there. I couldn’t wait for this review!

Very Enjoyable! Loved it, YAY!

Gotta love the Happy happy video game nerd

EarthBound and the MOTHER series history in America is pretty tragic. I just wish there was something we could do. But for now we have to be happy with what we have.

This really was excellent to watch.

This is the first I have heard of the Happy video Game Nerd. Such a nice guy. ^.^

Spyden said on Feb. 11, 2009

He’s really cool. He actually talks about good games instead of bashing terrible ones. I’ve learned about several games I had never heard of from him (and went on to play some of them).

His other videos are definitely worth watching. Thought they are usually this long.

ZombiePaul said on Feb. 11, 2009

I’ll definitely be checking out his other videos after seeing that.

Deiphobus said on Feb. 11, 2009

he’s a kid who goes around bashing things with a bat!

He has appealed to the hearts of Earthbound fans with flattery. And we have taken him into our hearts.

I prefer ANGRY VIDEO GAME NERD

Jupiter-x said on Feb. 11, 2009

I can honestly say I cried watching the opening set to S&T. I think I cry whenever I hear it. Is that bad? A little pavlovian?

Poe said on Feb. 12, 2009

I think it was meant to spark some emotions, Jupiter.

ZombiePaul said on Feb. 12, 2009

That’s by far the song the gets to me more than any other in the series. Probably in any series.

Bigot said on Feb. 12, 2009

I watched the whole thing.
Best…video review…ever…

ugghhhhh this dude is such a mega-nerd

“waah waah Startropics 2 waah wahh Dragon Warrior (a.k.a. Dragon Quest) drr hmm let me sip my merlot and whine some more about the uncultured gaijin who do not like RPGs like my sophisticated bretheren of glorious Nippon (a.k.a. “Japan” for you plebian yanks)”

thorough review though

22hunter said on Feb. 13, 2009

As I saw what the Nintendo Power magazine writers said about how mother was overshadowing Mario and Chrono Trigger. I was disgusted

captain_falcon said on Feb. 14, 2009

I really prefer guys like this over guys like the angry video game nerd. Why force yourself to play and review games you hate when you could have fun playing and reviewing a game you like?

@22hunter

Yeah I noticed that too. I think they like teasing us EB fans a bit. There was that whole Teaser for Sonic and the Black Knight: “It’s Mother 3. Just Kidding.” …But some of that might come from irritation caused by EB fans emailing NP for leaving EB off their top 10 lists last year.

Serenity said on Feb. 16, 2009

That was beautifully done.

If I had never played Earthbound before (heaven forbid!), I certainly would want to pick it up after watching that.

Kudos, my man, kudos.
I have a feeling that I’ll soon be a big fan of your other videos as well.

im a huge fan of earthbound! thank you for posting this!

Rift said on Feb. 16, 2009

Seriously man, that was pure genius. You are a credit to the Earthbound fanbase and the gaming community as a whole. I read somewhere that Nintendo stated that it has the greatest fans in the world. I think that is only half the truth. It’s the Mother/Earthbound series that has the greatest fans in the world.

I am showing this to all my friends and I think they will finally understand why I am such an Earthbound-nut. 😉

Mato said on Feb. 16, 2009

It almost sounds like people are thinking this is my video, but it’s not. But maybe I’m just misunderstanding and thinking that people are misunderstanding. The Happy Video Game Nerd is the guy to thank 😀

BlueBandanaJake said on Feb. 16, 2009

Great vid, but instead of repeating what everyone else has said (“Awesome! Amazing! Fuzzy Pickles!”) I just wanna say, HEY! TMNT for NES wasn’t a crap game! …it’s just really really hard (and I know AVN reviewed it, but it seemed more satirical than anything).

But again, wonderful review, gotta dust off the ol’ SNES again now!

P-Flute said on Feb. 17, 2009

Great review! Was wondering if I could show this to some friends who need some convincing to play the game, but… Afraid it might come off as too gushy? What do you guys think?

I still insist most all cases of outrage over Earthbound are justified. Besides being arguably one of the best games ever, the thing is a treasure trove and pure piece of history from the standpoint of the study of game design and interaction.

Aidan said on Feb. 17, 2009

He needs to watch his language because it is very rude, yay review, boo naughty words

Mrakken said on Feb. 17, 2009

Happy Video Game Nerd. Much less annoying than the Angry Video Game Nerd. That was a fantastic review. I’m glad someone took the plight of Earthbound fans and rolled it into a nice little video like that.

PKSkyler said on Feb. 18, 2009

a lot of people talk like that except much worse, Aidan, i mean his language was perfectly reasonible especially with all the other garbage you will see on the internet and TV.

Yeah I use slang curse words like that as well.

P.F. said on Feb. 18, 2009

…No, I think by average standards his language was kind of a little vulgar. By college aged standards, nothing you wouldn’t expect. But otherwise.

Sconner said on Feb. 18, 2009

Awesome

Variable Gear said on Feb. 20, 2009

P.F., I think the language comes with the territory. If you didn’t expect it, that says something about you, not the HVGN.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that this is one incredible review. I agreed with just about every point the HVGN made, especially on the subject of story in RPGs. Modern RPGs are dripping with needless explanation, while Earthbound is silly fun. It’s proof positive that a reduced focus on narrative doesn’t produce a lower quality of game.

P.F. said on Feb. 20, 2009

I didn’t completely expect it, but it’s not like I was offended or anything. I’m 25, and he spoke generally about how I do when I’m with other folks my age.

And I’m not particularly saying…anything about the Happy Video Game Nerd. Just someone said it was a bit vulgar, somebody said it wasn’t because they talked that way, and I’m kind of chiming in with, “technically, compared to the language I’d use in, say, a grocery store and not when I’m hanging out with my friends, it was vulgar.” By ‘average,’ how-we-talk-in-public standards? C’mon. That’s all I meant.

Also agreed, the review was awesome and totally entertaining. Again I query; other EB fans think I could use it to help get my friends to play EB, or do you suppose it’s a bit too gushing?

Luci said on Mar. 10, 2009

I swear, I really do, that if any of the Mother games come out for the VC I’ll buy them. I’ll run down and get myself a point card and buy them RIGHT AWAY! Just like I did with secret of Mana.
Also if Mother 3 comes out in Europe, I’ll buy that one too. Promise.

I loved this review! I think I will send it as a link to my friends. A lot of them are curious as to what Earthbound is. I think the Happy Video Game Nerd summed it all up in this one video and might prove as a good source of infortmation and the history of the issues with localizing the game.

Time to show this to people who don’t like EarthBound, one guy I talked to said and I quote “THAT IS THE WORST GAME EVER!” I think he’d like to play some big rigs!

The only GOOD RPG that doesn’t have a plot.(well, techically it does, but the plot is too subtle to be considered a plot) is Pokemon.

When you said, “We’re not asking for the moon”, a shot of the moon from Majora’s Mask would have fit perfectly.
