I just realized that it’s almost been a decade since I wrote my old EarthBoundX game. In late 1998, I had just gotten a book about DirectX game programming and wanted to make something simple to learn the ropes. Eventually I decided to do an Arkanoid/Breakout-style game, but I wanted it to be something more exciting. So eventually I decided to give it an EarthBound theme. Before long, I had...Read More »
The other day, while looking to see if any Japanese sites had any info on the MOTHER 2 debug menus (I couldn’t find any, incidentally), I ran across an old diary post on the Sarugakucho site. Sarugakucho is a company that assists game companies in various ways to make them better. Our King of Games friend who got us connected with all sorts of people works there, too. Anyway, I found this jo...Read More »
Many things I should mention before I forget them. MOTHER 3 Notes – I’ve been working on these on and off, but currently I’m very sick of the game so I’m going to let it sit for a while. I think next thing I add will be about character names. The EarthBound Zero Remake Hack is still on hold, even though MOTHER 3 is done technically. Details about this here. The biggest p...Read More »
A few days ago I made a patch for EarthBound Zero that makes the game easier by doubling the EXP and money you get from enemies. People tried it out and reported no problems, and that it made the game a breeze. Some people even reported that it was TOO easy. In any case, if you’re one of the many who can’t stand to play the game because of all the grinding, this patch is for you! Down...Read More »
At long last, the English fan translation of MOTHER 3 is complete! Go here to get it! And the translation blog has moved slightly, you can find it here. Anyway, go have fun and play! But don’t scarf the game down too fast, it’s been 13 years since EarthBound and who knows when the next EB/MOTHER game will come out, if ever. So take your time to savor your first playthrough 😀 ...Read More »
This aired a few months back, and I totally forgot about it until now. There was a MOTHER reference in a Shin-chan episode a while back, which was really cool. Coincidentally, I also used to be the translator for Shin-chan, though I don’t think I did the raw translation for this particular ep. Or maybe I did, it’s been such a long time. Anyway, one of the punch-up writers showed up to ...Read More »
Saw this on the forums, buried in an art topic. I can’t believe how well-done these mockups are. The attention to insane detail rivals my own, which is why at first I was stunned for half a second while I tried to figure out how they stole all our hack code to even get the fonts and positions just right 😛 Seriously, even the part where a manual line break had to be put before Ninten’...Read More »
I didn’t make these, in fact, I forget who did make them. But they look awesome. Good job mystery cookie person! BTW, I *was* involved in the making of Cookie Giygas some years back. Epic cookie tasted like ness ness ness it hurt it hurts ...Read More »
I saw this on Itoi’s site just now and had a laugh. The captions for his regular photos are usually pretty funny or interesting, but this one just fit stuff well, so, yeah. The text says something like: Dog appeared! Dog stared blankly! 0 damage to Dad! 5 Ricefish appeared! The Ricefish swam! 0 damage to Dad! Dad somehow felt empty! Dad took a photograph! ...Read More »
The topic’s come up a few times recently, so I figure I’ll translate this one snippet of an Itoi interview, which can be seen here. Note that this is also the same interview where he talks about the inspiration for Giygas. In any case, here’s the tiny excerpt. I’ll translate the entireeeeeee thing someday. A few parts are already available on my blog, though. Itoi: Well, fo...Read More »
- DJ: From what I’ve gathered I’m pretty sure he still writes copy, so they’re an ad company.
- cosmodos: What does his company even do? Is it actually lucrative? From what I can gather (not knowing Japanese), it’s just his blog, and he...

- Mary: The “behind the scenes” video on how the Ness animation was made is great too. The animators channel is A + Start.
